A call from the DSFL was received at 6:20 PM, all the long waiting to get the second approval to head to waivers was now becoming reality. It was a quick call where the DSFL gave the rundown, and Jaycee got the point pretty quickly. Jaycee was at home in Astoria and about to head to dinner when he received the call. He told his family about the approval, and all the happiness arose.
As the youngest of 5, Jaycee had to fight for his spot no matter where he was. In high school, despite living in Oregon he was a Washington Fan, which put a target on his back against opponents and even his own teammates, even the defensive coordinator telling his defensive backs to hit him harder while defending...so Jaycee hit them harder. He made varsity as a sophomore and got his first scholarship in his junior year, from Western Oregon. Of course he kept working hard, and as a senior he got offers from Oregon, Boise State, San Jose State, and Idaho State but would go to his dream school, Washington. He would stay all 4 years and earn his degree in Meteorology but would opt into going to the DSFL instead of a career in storm chasing, which is where we are now.
As Jaycee now knew he was on waivers, he and another waiver player, Amari Springer, would start chatting. Both wide receivers and both looking to make an impact wherever they go. Jaycee would wrap up his dinner with his family and no call yet, not worried, but he started to wonder what was going on in war rooms. Were people doubting him? Did people think his game would not translate to the next level? Or did the GMs just not know he was available? As the moon went down Jaycee decided his sleep curfew would be midnight. 9 PM nothing, not too worried however. 10 PM, talked to a close friend to kill some time and have a fun chat. 10:30 and not even any signs. Listening to some ssgkobe would also help Jaycee relax and start to doze off. He finally at about midnight decided to fall asleep, with no signs of a pickup yet and being told to get some sleep by others instead of stressing where he would end up. And with that, Jaycee went to sleep, as a waiver player.
Jaycee woke up around 6 AM, with no news from any GMs about potentially claiming him. He scrolled around on Instagram for about an hour until he received a call.
"Hello?"
"Hey this is a representative of the Portland Pythons. We have some interest in claiming you, and think you would be a great addition. Be here within the next 48 hours and let's get to work!"
"Thank you sir, you won't regret this!"
Jaycee had mixed emotions on this. Portland was close yes, but he had only been there to watch Trail Blazers and once in a while football. Always was a bit shady when he would stay for more than a day however.
He arrived at the training facility around 9:30 AM, had to stop to get a lox (on everything bagel) along the way. He was greeted by the Season 28 Kicker of the Year, Cade York. "Hey man! I was the one that called you, welcome!" It was a very welcoming team and when he settled in, he learned one play, "The Laz", was the one who recommended him. Now very thankful, he put on his pads and went to practice. He's not in Astoria anymore, he's in the big city of Portland, making a name for himself.
