The Cedric Wilkins II saga continues, as the rookie cornerback appears to have arrived in Florida early for the Philadelphia Liberty’s week three game against the Sarasota Sailfish. Reporters are unsure whether this constitutes a break in Wilkins’ pattern; although he has distinctly broken from his trend of lateness and absence, he arrived separate from his teammates, suggesting his rift with the franchise may still be widening.
Reporters indicate that though Wilkins arrived at Sarasota Bradenton International Airport earlier than the rest of the Liberty, he did not arrive alone; rather, he arrived with his mother, who has not yet been seen in the stands supporting her son with his new team, and another unidentified woman, whose relationship with either Wilkins or his mother is unknown. Although our reporters have made a number of efforts to engage with Wilkins and this small entourage, Wilkins has refused to comment on his early appearance in Sarasota, on his mother’s sudden presence, or as to the identity of the younger woman accompanying them; similarly, he has refused to allow reporters to speak with either of the pair, sternly warning reporters that, “They’re with me, you fuck with them, I’ll fuck with you. They ain’t need you in their business, so leave ‘em be”.
Although we have limited information about why Wilkins felt compelled to arrive early for this contest with Sarasota, and almost none regarding the entourage accompaniment, our reporters indicate that Wilkins has been welcomed warmly into most of the facilities in Sarasota, although team meetings and practice as well as the home locker room remain off limits, and has been working closely with Sailfish cornerback Peter Patterson since his arrival.
There appear to be mixed feelings about Wilkins’ most recent escapades in the Liberty camp; both the front office and team members appear to be further and further divided on the issue of Wilkins as the season has progressed. For instance, Lip Chap, who appears to have had a change of heart since we last spoke with him, attacked reporters, “You know, Cedric just can't seem to make the media happy, can he? You get mad when he's late to camp and to our games. You get mad when he leaves early to get to our games on time. Can you all just make up your mind for once? Before he left for Sarasota, Cedric and I chatted at length about the great Tom Hanks classic film, Forrest Gump, and how becoming a shrimping boat captain was one of his goals in life. Now, I'm not sure why the media is making a big deal about him being down there learning the ways of shrimping from the legendary Peter Patterson, who, I believe, is the current Chief Officer of Shrimping for the Bubba Gump Shrimp Corporation. We know that Cedric will be there when we suit up against the Sailfish, and as an added bonus I believe he will be bringing a few pounds of fresh-caught shrimp for a postgame snack”.
Wilkins did not comment on the validity of this statement, nor did we find any information confirming a relationship between Patterson and either of Forrest Gump or Bubba Gump Shrimp Corporation.
Lip Stashe, meanwhile, took a more hesitant and tempered approach than we have seen recently, “From what I was told by Cedric's agent is that he was looking at potential housing for his mother who is having health issues…I am not sure what the health issues are, but we in the Liberty organization hope she stays healthy. That being said, I won't address the rumors of Cedric potentially leaving the team to fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming a ping-pong champion and competing for gold in the next summer Olympics. I am currently getting ready to travel with the team for our game against Sarasota and will speak with Cedric in person, perhaps over a game of ping-pong”.
Again, there has been no indication from the Wilkins camp that his mother, currently in her mid-forties, has experienced any pressing health concerns, nor have we seen any indication that Wilkins has taken a special interest in ping-pong.
For more clarity in commentary, we turned to Wilkins’ teammates; uncharacteristically, the response that caught our reporters’ attention most was that of Matt Cross, the normally soft-spoken former nickelback for the franchise, who said of the situation, “It’s definitely strange to me…since we drafted him, we’ve offered Cedric countless opportunities for support, but he’s accepted none of them. I like to believe our personal trainers here are top notch, a big reason why I’ve been able to perform at the level I have for so long, and it’s not like we lack training staff or willing mentors. He just doesn’t have that motivation to learn”. Cross, asked about whether Wilkins’ work with Patterson bothered him, continued, “I really don’t know what to think about him training in Sarasota…it definitely doesn’t help him form positive relations with our team”.
Wilkins’ performance this season, despite his absences from team training, has shown real promise, as he already has two sacks through just two games; however, the rookie cornerback appears to have trouble committing to his training and his team, at least as far as Philadelphia has been concerned.
