Defensive Line Standouts – Week 9
We’re back! Welcome to week 9 of our Season 4 Defensive Line Standouts. My personal life got in the way a bit, but with the help of my good friend @ItsJustBarry, we’ve got this ball rolling again. Expect to see the following weeks coming out relatively quickly as he has volunteered to help me write a couple of the weeks. My goal is to have through week 14 finished by the end of next week. Enough chit chat… Let’s begin!
Defensive End Top Performers
J. Anders
($$$$) 5 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
Jordan Anders has quietly been having a fantastic season for the Hawks. He started out the season leafing the league in tackles for loss, and although those numbers have fallen off a bit, his ability to get to the quarterback has improved dramatically. As is the Hawks MO, he excels at both his job, and at flying under the radar. The Hawks head to Philly next week for a very important conference game that looks to have important playoff implications.
D. Davidson
($$) 3 TCK, 3 TFL
Making his second appearance on our list, and the only member of the Liberty appearing here, Davidson posted the second-best performance of any defensive end this week with 3 tackles and an impressive 3 tackles for loss. You don’t hear much from the Philadelphia defense line (9 appearances in 9 weeks), but every once in a while, one of them comes through in a big way. Davidson will host the Baltimore Hawks next week in a heated conference rivalry.
R. Maddox
($$$) 2 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
After the self-titled, “Best TE in the NSFL” made the switch to defensive end, many expected him to make an immediate impact on the game. Unfortunately for Maddox, it didn’t quite turn out that way to start the season. Luckily for him, the adjustment period seems to be ending and he is beginning to some into his own. Making his third appearance, Maddox is tied for the team lead with 3, with fellow defensive end Gustavsson. The Wraiths will be hosting a struggling Las Vegas Legion team in week 10.
E. Gustavsson
($$$) 4 TCK, 2 TFL
The second Yellowknife defensive end to make our list this week, Gustavsson has had a promising year after a quality rookie season. What was once an achilles heel for the Wraiths turned into a strength this past week against the Yeti. Gustavsson was unable to get to the quarterback this week, but finished with 4 tackles and 2 tackles for loss. The Yellowknife Wraiths will host the much-improved Las Vegas Legion next week.
Other Great Performers
B. Blade
($ x5) 2 TCK, 2 TFL
J. Cox
($$$) 2 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
Blade is making his fifth appearance this season with a pair of both tackles and tackles for loss this past week. Cox is the lone Legion representative this week after finishing the week with 2 tackles, 1 tackles for loss, and 1 sack.
Defensive Tackle Top Performers
D. Miller
($ x 7) 5 TCK, 2 SCK
There a few things in this life that are a near certainty, Dan Miller making our list is one of them. Posting the highest point total of the week, Miller finished with 5 tackles and was the only defensive lineman to record more than 1 sack. I’m quickly running out of unique nice things to say about this man’s level of play. He has nice looking cleats? I dunno. San Jose will head to the desert in week 10 for a tough road test against the Arizona Outlaws.
A. Asipi
($ x6) 5 TCK, 1 SCK
I have to be honest, Asipi took me a bit by surprise this season. I knew there would be one good defensive tackle in Arizona, but I did not expect there to be two. Making his sixth appearance in only 7 weeks, Asipi is tied with Sandoval for the second most appearances by a defensive tackle. Finishing the week with 5 tackles and 1 sack, Asipi has shown that he can contribute in both run and pass-defense situations. Arizona will bost a vastly improved San Jose SaberCats squad next week.
S. Skidmarks
($) 7 TCK, 1 TFL
The man with the most unfortunate name in football, Shi’terrick Skidmarks made his mark this week (get it?!) with 7 tackles and 1 tackle for loss. This week marks the beginning of a possible streak (another pun!), and although he was unable to reach the quarterback, his 7 tackles were the most of any defensive lineman. The winless Yeti will host the back to back NSFC champions next week in hope of achieving their first win.
A. Tomlinson
($$$) 5 TCK, 1 SCK
Once considered to be one of the best defensive ends in the league, Tomlinson has struggled with his move to the interior of the defensive line. Although he was never an adept pass rusher, Tomlinson made a name for himself as one of the best run defenders in the NSFL. He continued to carry that torch this week with his 5 tackles, (the second most of any defensive lineman this week) and recording a sack as well. The Otters head to Philadelphia next week to face a Liberty team that is deep in the hunt for an NSFC playoff spot.
Other Great Performers
B. Bjornsson
($$$) 4 TCK, 1 SCK
R. Sandoval
($ x6) 3 TCK, 1 SCK
The Bearded Wonder makes his second consecutive appearance on out list this week after a rough first half to the season. His 4 tackles and 1 sack earned his out fifth spot. Ricardo Sandoval earned his sixth spot this week, the second most of any defensive tackle. His 3 tackles and 1 sack were enough to earn him out final spot on the list this week.
Team Appearances After Week 9*
Arizona: 20 (+2)
Baltimore: 20 (+2)
San Jose: 15 (+1)
Orange County: 15 (+1)
Las Vegas: 11 (+1)
Yellowknife: 10 (+3)
Philadelphia: 9 (+1)
Colorado: 8 (+1)
Arizona and Baltimore stay dead-locked at the stop after having two players each on our list this week, while gaining one spot on both San Jose and Orange County, who are tied for third. Las Vegas stay in fifth, while Yellowknife posts an impressive three player performance and jumps up one spot from seventh to sixth. Philadelphia drops one to seventh, while Colorado stands pat in last place. On a positive note, this marks only the third time each team in the NSFL has had a player appear on our list this season.
As always, if you have any comments, corrections, or question, I’d love to hear them below.
*Just a reminder, this ranking is not necessarily indicative of how well a team’s defense is operating as a whole, just how many times a player from that team has appeared on our list.
