Week 1 Thoughts
What up Portland fans?!? I decided to start my blog again and I’m going to focus on the current season since it’s been awhile since we won the championship. Those were the best times of my career and now I’m excited to talk about the new season and new guys we got.
Draft day came quicker than I thought it would and I won’t rehash some of the drama surrounding my press release, but I will say that I’m forever thankful that the Pythons organization wanted to keep me happy and trade up for me. I’d like to think I made it worth their while even though the stats don’t show it. I haven’t been in the locker room at all and have held out on communicating with much of the league since I received some backlash for my press release, but I’m hoping to reach out to my teammates more in the locker room as the season winds down and I can focus on other stuff.
Our preseason didn’t go as planned, but hey, you know its preseason so it doesn’t count. We went 2 and 2 and got a couple kinks worked out in the offense and defense. We have a ton of new guys this season and I’m super excited to have Vernon Collins and Egan Winter on the defense with me. I’m hoping Collins can turn into the sack machine that Andreas Waiters was for us when we had our championship season. With the contraction of the DSFL and the new bot teams, we were excited to face the Norfolk Seawolves and their newly engineered bots. I think the offense did as well as they could this game given a tough bot team to face and Roenick did really well in his regular season debut. I was happy to see Aaron and Storm find their rhythm as well and it was a tight game with us leading at the half from a Dwayne Aaron touchdown.
Once the second half started, it seemed like we lost all momentum we had going in the first half. We couldn’t stop the Norfolk run for some reason and in the fourth quarter they managed a touchdown pass to put them up 20-10. Once the defense stepped it up, Pablo Sanchez got an interception and we were excited to come back. Unfortunately the offense couldn’t come close to the end zone and us guys on defense couldn’t stop them in the end. I had a decent game myself with 5 tackles and 1 sack while our new strong safety Bobby Ruckus got 8 tackles and Egan Winter managed 5. Collins struggled a bit, but found some good looks with 2 tackles and 2 tackles for loss. I’m not mad about this loss since the bot team was fine-tuned and we were on the road. Road games are always tough and without the kind of offense we had going into week 1 last season, we couldn’t expect the same results. All the coaches reminded us that it’ll take time to adjust to a new defensive scheme and a complete new offense.
So yeah, week 1 is in the books. I’m optimistic that we can at least tie our season breaking record from S2 even with all these new guys starting. It might take us awhile to adjust and learn how to play with each other, but I’m super excited to see how this season goes. We’ll have the best offense in the league and defense in the league by the end of the season. Let’s go Portland! The Bull is ready to take the league by the horns!
