It's been less than a week since the Pennington brothers applied to join the DSFL after winning the national title with Syracuse University together. Chad Pennington is sitting his parent's living room, on his dad's recliner, knees tucked in close to his chest, held there by his arms. Next to the recliner, on the table, is a picture of his brothers and he in that very same chair, all five years old. Their parents on either side of the chair behind them smiling at the camera, while Brad, Chad and Thad stare in another direction (watching the family TV to keep them looking in the same direction for the picture).
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]*** We jump to yesterday, at 11 PM. Chad is walking into his dorm building ***[/div]
Chad is walking home from the gym, listening to his cool down mix to help him get to sleep when he gets back to his dorm. His music is interrupted by the ring of an incoming text just as he gets to the hallway his dorm is in *bing bing*. It's from Brad. He's been dreading this text.Chad stops walking, looks up at the ceiling, and finally opens the text. Just got picked up by the Coyotes, I'm going to Kansas City! A familiar lump materializes in Chad's throat. His eyes start to burn with the pain of tears. But he fights them back, he can't show his anguish with his brother Thad on the other side of the door. Chad steps into his room, packs his bag full of clothes for the next few days, leaves the room to get to his car, and calls his home.
"Mom... Mom, I need to come home."
"Chad? What's wrong dear? Don't you have school in the morning?"
"I'm not going, I need to come home. Please pick me up from the airport in the morning. I can't sleep here."
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]*** Snap back to Chad sitting in his dad's chair in the living room ***[/div]
Chad picks up the picture of his family from nearly 14 years ago. Everyone looked so happy. His brothers and he watching TV together, his parents so proud of their three kids. Up until last night you could catch the three of them watching TV together, the only difference being that they couldn't fit comfortably in a single chair together anymore. Chad leans back, puts the picture back on the table, and says to himself "Don't leave me guys. I miss you..." Chad didn't know that his mother was able to hear all of this from the kitchen she was hiding in behind the corner, wondering what caused her son to become this nervous wreck. Now she knows. She looks at the clock, it's noon. Only 7 hours left until Chad and Thad find out where they'll selected to play this season. She prays for the sake of her son that Kansas City has chosen Chad.
