Somehow Week 2 of the NFL Season is already in the books. It goes by so fast I wish it would just slow down a little. Before we know it the playoffs will be here and the season will be over. Onto the week 2 review. I'm skipping that awful Thursday night game between the Bucs and Panthers as I talked about it in my last post.
Bengals over 49ers
Not only was I wrong about this game, but I was way wrong. The 49ers dominated the Bengals all game long. Jimmy G looked good distributing the ball all over the field and the three headed running back monster looked really good. So far this team looks much better than I thought they would be. Maybe it's due to their schedule, but being 2-0 is impressive for any team. The Bengals have a pretty awful offensive line and that hasn't helped Joe Mixon at all as he has struggled on the ground. John Ross salvaged his week with a last second garbage time touch down, but this team just is not very good.
The Liberty and Coyote would never meet, but if they did it would probably be similar to this game.
Chargers over Lions
The Chargers missed multiple field goals in this game and lost a close one to the Lions. The Lions defense actually looked pretty good in this one keeping the Chargers from scoring at all in the second half. This was one of many close game that came down to the wire this week. Rivers tried to force the ball to his favorite receiver Keenan Allen late in the game and the Lions were able to pick it off to seal the victory.
The Butchers took care of the Yeti in both their matchups this season, which obviously didn't happen in this matchup. I do think that the Chargers are the better team and with a healthy kicker would have won this game, but that's what makes the NFL so great.
Packers over Vikings
The Packers got off to a hot start before letting the Vikings creep back into this one, but they held on for the victory. The Vikings are a hard team to figure out. I don't think they'll win many games if Cousins has to throw the ball 30 times.
I equated this to Sabercats v. Hawks. The Hawks beat the Sabercats in their one matchup this season, so that lines up with my comparison.
Titans over Colts
This was a close one, but the Titans and Mariota let a potential win go when he clocked the ball on 3rd and 2 instead of running a quick play to try and get the 1st down. I don't understand why the Titans did this and if it was a coaching choice or Mariota. The Titans have a pretty good defense, but Mariota holds this team back.
This would be a NSFL/DSFL matchup between the Hawks and Seawolves and while I was probably unfair to the Titans by comparing them to the Seawolves they did lose this game, so while my prediction was wrong my comparison was correct.
Patriots over Dolphins
This wasn't a contest. The Dolphins are terrible and the Patriots are one of the best teams in the NFL. Not much to say about this game, but the Patriots are gonna possibly be 16-0 and the Dolphins might go 0-16.
The Wraiths against the Solar Bears would be similar to this and would be no contest.
Bills over Giants
The Bills are a pretty good team. The defense is very good and 2nd year quarterback Allen is improving. The Giants have decided to bench Eli Manning for rookie Daniel Jones, and while Barkley still looks pretty good the rest of the team isn't very good.
The Second Line and Copperheads split games this year. I don't think the Giants would beat the Bills a 2nd time, so probably not the best comparison. Honestly, the Giants probably shouldn't be compared to the Second Line and instead should be a DSFL team.
Steelers over Seahawks
This was a close game even though Roethlisberger hurt his elbow in the first half. Mason Rudolph actually looked pretty good. The Seahawks got helped by a suspect pass interference review. I hate this new PI review rule.
The Butchers beat the Sabercats this season, which lines up with what happened here.
Cowboys over Washington Football Team
The Washington Football Team might be 0-2, but they haven't looked terrible so far. They have a pretty good defense. The Cowboys are 2-0 and have looked like one of the top teams in the NFL. Dak Prescott is looking like he will soon be one of the top paid quarter backs in the league.
I compared the Copperheads versus the Yeti, and the Copperheads did beat the Yeti in their one matchup this season, but the Copperheads were probably not the right pick for the Cowboys.
Ravens over Cardinals
Lamar Jackson has looked good so far after 2 weeks. Also, Kyler Murray didn't have a great start to his first game, but has actually looked pretty good. The Cardinals might be decent once they get Patrick Peterson back on defense. Rookie wideout Hollywood Brown looks phenomenal for the Ravens, but that might be because they've had two easy matchups. The Ravens are primed to win the AFC North this year, and right now it doesn't even look like it's going to be close.
This is another one of those NSFL/DSFL matchups that would never happen, but would turn out similarly to this game.
Texans over Jaguars
The Texans barely scraped by with a win over the Gardner Minshew lead Jaguars. Minshew scored a late touch down to put the Jaguars within 1 point, and they elected to go for 2, but instead of put the ball in the quarter backs hand and let him make a play they handed it to Leonard Fournette who got stopped just short. I honestly thought this would not be as close as it was, and now I don't know how I feel about the Texans. On paper they should be very good, but the offensive line can't keep Watson upright and that causes a lot of problems.
The Yeti actually beat the Outlaws this season, which almost happened in this matchup.
Chiefs over Raiders
The Chiefs offense can be very good. Putting up 28 points in one quarter is impressive. However, they were down 10-0 to the Raiders of all teams, and only scored points in one of the four quarters in this game. Part of that might be because after halftime they had a decent lead and didn't need to score more points, but I would be a bit concerned if I was a Chiefs fan. The real test will be next week against a good Ravens team.
Here's another NSFL/DSFL matchup and the final score probably wouldn't be this close.
Bears over Broncos
A terrible roughing the passer called helped the Bears big time late in this game. Former NC State Wolfpack defensive standout Bradley Chubb hit Bears quarter back Mitchell Trubisky when he was throwing the ball and it was called roughing the passer when it definitely shouldn't have been. Neither team looked great on offense, which isn't too surprising considering these are two defensive teams. Bears fans should feel lucky the refs gifted them this game. The Bears offense looks like it has taken a step back from where it was last year, which is surprising.
I compared these teams to a NSFL/DSFL matchup and that's probably a disservice to the Broncos, but they did end up losing this one, however it was much closer than any NSFL/DSFL matchup would be.
Saints over Rams
This was supposed to be the premier matchup of the week. A rematch of the controversial NFC Championship game that caused the creation of the pass interference review process. Drew Brees hurt his thumb and was out for the majority of this game. The refs screwed the Saints out of a defensive touchdown in this one. The Rams didn't really look that good, but they did come away with the win.
I compared both of these teams to the Wraiths, so that obviously can't be compared. Without Brees the Saints should still be decent, but not a top NFL team.
Eagles over Falcons
After putting up a dud in Minnesota in week 1 the Falcons took care of business on Sunday night against the Eagles. The Falcons are one of those teams who play much better at home than on the road. The Eagles had a couple of receivers that got hurt early in this game, which limited them on offense. The Eagles are a hard team to figure out as they had to come from behind to win in week 1 against the Washington football team and then lost to a Falcons team that didn't look good in week 1.
The Wraiths lost to the Outlaws in their lone matchup this season which matches up with the outcome of this game. Maybe I should make my picks based on how my comparison teams did from now on.
Browns over Jets
Not only did the Jets not have their starting quarter back, but Myles Garrett caused backup Trevor Siemian to hurt his ankle and have to leave the game early. That cause Luke Falk to come in and play the rest of the game. He played ok, but it wasn't enough as the Browns came away with the easy victory. Odell Beckham Jr. made some fantastic catches and Myles Garrett racked up 3 sacks on the defense. This Browns team was extremely overrated heading into the season, but they are still a pretty good team.
The Otters actually lost to the Liberty this season, which was not the case in this game.
Now, onto my week 3 predictions. There are a lot of tough calls this week, especially with quite a few starting quarterbacks out. Brees and Roethlisberger are definitely out. It's looking like Cam Newton might be out as well. The Jets will be starting Luke Falk again and Eli got benched for Daniel Jones. All this makes for tough picking. Anyway, onto the week 3 picks.
Titans over Jaguars
Gardner Minshew looked pretty good last week, but I don't think it will be enough against the Titans. Also, their best defensive player is demanding a trade, so that doesn't bode well. Expect a low scoring game where Derrick Henry rushes for over 100 yards.
Bills over Bengals
The Bills look like one of the better teams in the league right now and the Bengals looked awful at home against the 49ers.
Cowboys over Dolphins
One of the easier picks of the weeks. The Cowboys are a 21.5 point favorite and I think they cover that easily.
Packers over Broncos
Aaron Rodgers and the Packers are back to their old dominant ways and until something changes I'm definitely not picking against them at home.
Colts over Falcons
The Colts have looked solid even without Andrew Luck. The Falcons don't play well on the road. This one will be close and it scares me to pick a team in a close game that's kicker is having issues, but that's what I'm doing.
Chiefs over Ravens
This game will be closer than people think, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Ravens upset the Chiefs.
Vikings over Raiders
Another team that plays better at home.
Patriots over Jets
Will the Patriots pitch another shutout? Probably.
Eagles over Lions
This is another game that I'm struggling to pick. I think the Eagles are the better team overall, but the Lions have played better football so far in my opinion.
Bucs over Giants
The Daniel Jones era will start with people questioning why he was picked at 6 overall.
Cardinals over Panthers
The Cardinals are starting to figure things out on offense and Cam Newton is hurt.
Chargers over Texans
A close game that I just go with the home team on.
49ers over Steelers
The 49ers are one of the bigger surprises so far and the Steelers are starting Mason Rudolph.
Seahawks over Saints
Bridgewater and Seahawks at home make this one easy.
Rams over Browns
The Rams are only a 3 point favorite, but this game won't be that close.
Bears over Washington Football Team
Honestly, I had a hard time picking the Bears. This one is a toss up for sure. Stick with the better talent even if they haven't looked that great so far this year.
Bengals over 49ers
Not only was I wrong about this game, but I was way wrong. The 49ers dominated the Bengals all game long. Jimmy G looked good distributing the ball all over the field and the three headed running back monster looked really good. So far this team looks much better than I thought they would be.
