With S17 being completed, it is now time to look forward to the draft, as the S18 draft class begins preparation to join their NSFL teams. With this known, I thought it would be a good time to do a small analysis of how the DSFL draft for the S18 class went, which teams did well, and which teams did poorly. S18 is one of the larger draft classes of the past few seasons, rivaling S15, and saw over 100 players drafted. At this point in time there are roughly 50 remaining actives from S18.
This data will focus on those remaining actives, where actives are the players that have updated since September 7th, 2019. With that definition there are 52 actives. Of those 52, 48 of them have updated in the last two updates, while four of them have not updated since the 7th.
This analysis will look at how many of the remaining actives each team drafted, and how much TPE they accumulated. It will then rank the teams by their draft success.
1. San Antonio Marshals: 12 Actives 1973 total TPE 164.4 Average TPE
2. Tijuana Luchadores: 9 Actives 1423 total TPE 158.1 Average TPE
3. Kansas City Coyotes: 9 Actives 1312 total TPE 145.8 Average TPE
4. Norfolk SeaWolves: 7 Actives 1096 total TPE 156.6 Average TPE
5. Portland Pythons: 8 Actives 1019 total TPE 127.4 Average TPE
6. Palm Beach Solar Bears: 7 Actives 856 total TPE 122.3 Average TPE
1. San Antonio Marshals: Antonio has perhaps the best draft, with 3 players in the top 10 of TPE, and 5 in the top 20. They also had the most total actives on their roster, and highest average TPE. San Antonio managed to secure both quality and quantity in their draft. Players such as Tyrone Biggums, Pete Parker, and Louisiana Purchase were able to solidify the top of their player class, but they saw contributions across the board, giving them the best draft class. Unfortunately this would not help them in their pursuit of an Ultimini, as they would see another first round playoff exit.
2. Tijuana Luchadores: Tijuana barley edged out Kansas City for the second best draft, securing 9 actives, 1423 total TPE, and an average TPE of 158.1. Tijuana managed a strong draft class for a team that did not draft within the top 10 picks, focusing more on quantity of draft picks. Tijuana had 22 picks in the draft, meaning roughly 40% of their picks remained active. Tijuana managed 2 players in the top 10 of TPE, and 5 within the top 20. Thudd Kassel and Bender Rodriguez held the front line for the Luchadores, both finishing in the top 10. Tijuana’s safety draft class stayed consistent, with all three of them, Wayne Howyanow, Howard Ryan, and Joseph Wozniak, remaining active.
3. Kansas City Coyotes: Kansas City comes in third, with 9 actives, but a lower average TPE than Tijuana. Kansas City did manage to secure the top TPE earner, Maurice Virtanen, but only 2 players in the top 10. They would manage 3 players in the top 20. The top three TPE players from the Coyotes did well for the team, Maurice Virtanen, Net Gaines, and Korrin Abernathy, all three defensive players. They managed to provide Kansas City with a strong defensive front, but it would not be enough to overcome Portland in the playoffs.
4. Norfolk SeaWolves: Norfolk and Portland would place extremely close in the rankings, with Portland having more actives than Norfolk, but Norfolk’s higher total TPE gives them the edge in the rankings. Norfolk had two of their players place within the top 10 of TPE, Bjørn Ironside and Marcella Tōriki. They would also have three total players in the top 20, with Marlo Smart rounding out the group. Norfolk would have a difficult season, despite having some of the most active players in Marcella and Bjorn. There is very little chance that Bjorn chooses not to play for a NSFL team, making improvement even more difficult for the SeaWolves.
5. Portland Pythons: Portland had the second worst draft class, but that didn’t stop them from competing for the Ultimini, eventually falling to Tijuana in the championship. Portland would have the most regular season wins, going 11 – 3. Portland would have only 2 players in the top 20, Jay Cue and Jake Watson, but these players would contribute greatly to the season and playoff run. Portland was hurt by Trae Bacon going IA, but he was still able to help them throughout the season. Otto Vanjensen going IA also hurt the Pythons. These two staying active could have helped improve their draft ranking significantly.
6. Palm Beach Solar Bears: Palm Beach struggled greatly during the season, in part due to their poor draft. They would finish with only 7 actives, the lowest of the DSFL teams. Palm Beach would finish with zero players in the top 10, and only 1 in the top 20, Zach Hall. The season would traumatize Zach such that he switched from TE to DE. Palm Beach would finish with the lowest average TPE, and the lowest total TPE, being the only team to not exceed 1000 total TPE among their draft class. Overall, a disappointing draft followed by a disappointing season.
