Another week is in the books in the NFL and I’m more clueless than ever when predicting how some of these games are going to turn out. I would think that the more games played the better my predictions would be, but so far that’s not been the case. At least I finally picked a Thursday Night game correctly as the Patriots unsurprisingly beat the Giants last night. So onto the Week 5 Recap.
Bears over Raiders
I was pretty upset with my self when I was looking at my picks on Sunday morning. The Raiders at home against a team with their backup quarterback should have been an obvious pick for me, but I went with the Bears defense to dominate the game. Josh Jacobs ended up dominating this game 123 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Bears made a 3rd quarter comeback scoring three straight touchdowns to actually take a 21 to 17 lead into the 4th quarter, but Josh Jacobs scored on a 2 yard run to take the lead with less than 2 minutes left in the game. The Raiders are now 3-2 and are actually better than I thought they would be. The Bears are similar to last year, which was good enough to win their division, but their division seems to be much tougher this year and I’ll be surprised if they are in the playoffs.
I wrongly compared the Raiders to a DSFL team. They are probably more like a middle of the road NSFL team. Maybe like the Copperheads or Sabercats? The Butchers beat both those teams last year though, so maybe my comp for the Bears isn’t good either?
Bengals over Cardinals
Alright, I admit it. I am awful at picking games. The Bengals are worse than I thought they were. They couldn’t even beat a bad Cardinals team at home. Will AJ Green coming back from injury give them the offensive boost they need to finally win a game? I’m not exactly sure when Green will be back on the field for the Bengals, but I imagine it won’t be too much longer. For the Cardinals, Kyler Murray continues to improve and I imagine will be a force in the next year or two. He ended up with over 250 yards passing and almost 100 rushing yards in this game. One of the Cardinals biggest issues is having to settle for field goals once they get into the red zone. Zane Gonzalez had 4 field goals for 31 yards or less in this game. Granted one of those was to break the tie with no time left. The other 3 are times where the Cardinals got into scoring range and failed to score a touch down. This will have to improve if the Cardinals want to have any shot in a division with the Rams, Seahawks, and 49ers.
The Solar Bears and Coyotes do play during the DSFL season. I think this is the first time I’ve compared two teams to DSFL teams that ended up playing each other, since most teams I compared to NSFL teams. The Coyotes (Bengals) beat the Solar Bears (Cardinals) in both their matchups in Season 17. That doesn’t matchup with this result. Also, what the fuck is a solar bear? Is it a bear that basks in the sun? What kind of name is that?
Saints over Bucs
Teddy Bridgewater has now led the Saints to 3 straight victories. He had a great game against the porous Bucs passing defense with 314 passing yards and 4 touch downs. The Saints are scary good, and Brees will be coming back to a winning team that’s set to make another playoff run. The Bucs are a hard team to figure out, and part of that is because of how inconsistent Jameis Winston is at throwing the ball. The Bucs just beat the Rams in LA scoring 55 points and Winston had an almost 70% completion percentage. Then the next week he is barely over 50% against the Saints. This makes the Bucs extremely hard to predict, and now they travel to London to play the Panthers who are on a 3 game win streak. Which Jameis shows up in London? That will probably determine the outcome of the game.
The Wraiths (Saints) actually lost to the Copperheads (Bucs) in their lone Season 17 matchup. Not what happened here.
Vikings over Giants
Without Saquon Barkley the Giants offense doesn’t have the weapons to compete in the NFL. Especially against a good defense like the Vikings. The Vikings also had success through the air as Kirk Cousins had over 300 yards passing and 2 touch downs. Dalvin Cook continues to be a beast on the ground with 132 yards on 21 carries. A week after Adam Thielen complained to the media about his lack of production Cousins got him the ball 7 times for 130 yards and 2 scores. That will have to keep up if they want to beat the Eagles this week, who come in with the top rushing defense in the league only giving up 63 yards on the ground. The Vikings will have to go against their nature as an offense. They have shown they want to run the ball all game, but I don’t think they’ll be able to this week. The Giants have already played their Thursday night game against the Patriots and honestly they scored more points than I thought they would. Daniel Jones managed to connect with Golden Tate for a long score, but the Patriots were victorious as most everyone predicted.
The Sabercats (Vikings) and Second Line (Giants) are familiar opponents and the Sabercats swept the Second Line in Season 17, but watch out. Second Line just had a huge draft class and they are gonna be dangerous in the near future.
Eagles over Jets
The Jets really need Sam Darnold back. Luke Falk is no where near ready to even be a backup quarter back and the Jets aren’t talented enough to make up for it like a team like the Saints are. The Eagles scored 14 of their 31 points this game off of defensive returns. Carson Wentz didn’t really have to do much as the Eagles cruised through this victory. They have a much tougher test this week in Minnesota. The Jets have another tough test with the Cowboys at home. We really won’t see if this Jets team has any potential or not until Sam Darnold is fully back. That might be this week or it might take more time. In the mean time the only thing they can do is keep giving the ball to Lev Bell.
The Wraiths (Eagles) swept the Liberty (Jets) in season 17. That’s consistent with how this turned out.
Ravens over Steelers
After a hot start to the season the Ravens and Lamar Jackson haven’t looked as good recently. Jackson ended up throwing 3 interceptions against the Steelers, which helped them stay in the game even when backup quarter back Mason Rudolph got knocked out of the game, and when I say knocked out he actually blacked out for quite a long time. Delvin Hodges, a player I’ve never heard of, out of Samford came in for the rest of the game and will also start this week against the Chargers. The Steelers at 1-4 have pretty much no hope of salvaging their season, and they don’t even have a first round pick to look forward to. The Ravens are 3-2 and it looks like it is between them and the Browns as to who will win what I consider the worst division in football this year.
The Butchers (Ravens) only play the Sabercats (Steelers) once a season and in Season 17 the Butchers did beat the Sabercats, which matches up with this outcome.
Patriots over Washington
The Patriots schedule has been so weak to this point they haven’t even had to try in most of their games. The defense actually gave up a long run to Steven Sims Jr early in the game, but didn’t give up any more points after that. The Patriots already played their game this week, beating the Giants on Thursday night, and while the Giants kept it close for a while the Patriots scored 2 defensive touch downs and came away with another easy victory. Hopefully the schedule will get tougher soon. Washington promptly fired their head coach after this game and now will limp along for the rest of the season. Dan Snyder is the worst owner in the NFL and I don’t think this team will have success again until he is gone. Fans even started a Sell the Team chant during this game, which is more news worthy than anything the team did. Washington travels down to Miami this week in a battle of winless teams. They might actually come away with a win for the first time this year.
The Wraiths (Patriots) split with the Yeti (Washington) in Season 17. I don’t think I made a very good comp with the Yeti and Washington. Washington is probably more like a DSFL team this season.
Jaguars over Panthers
After an 0-2 start to the season I decided I would pick against the Panthers every week, and so far they’ve won every time I’ve done that. I’m not normally superstitious, but I guess in this case I am. Christian McCaffrey continues to be an unstoppable force for the Panthers. He added 176 rushing yards and 61 receiving yards in this game. Kyle Allen didn’t have a great game, but it was enough. The Panthers travel to London to face the Bucs who they lost to in week 2. Hopefully the result will be different this time. Also, Cam Newton looks to be nearing his return, which could happen as soon as Week 7 after the Panthers Week 6 bye. That could be a huge boost to this offense if he is fully healthy after never fully recovering from a preseason foot injury that he aggravated in week 2. For the Jaguars, Gardner Minshew had a great game with 374 passing yards and 2 touchdowns. The Jags aren’t a bad team and will continue to compete. They have a tough matchup with the Saints this week, but in the NFL anything can happen, so don’t be too surprised if the Jags beat the Saints in Jacksonville.
The Otters (Panthers) took down the Yeti (Jaguars) easily in season 17. The right outcome, but this game was much closer.
Texans over Falcons
The Falcons are really bad. I did not expect this. They just let the Texans put up 53 points off of 5 passing touch downs from Watson. 3 of them going to Will Fuller who caught 14 balls in this game. The Falcons fall to 1-4 and in 4th place in the competitive NFC South. They might be up for a coaching change at the end of the season. The Falcons travel to Arizona to play the Cardinals this week, so they will probably get another win, but I don’t think it is guaranteed. The Texans unfortunately have to go to Kansas City and face the wrath of Patrick Mahomes coming off a losing effort against the Colts. Definitely not ideal for the Texans.
I compared both of these teams to the Outlaws. Obviously I was wrong about the Falcons. I thought they had a good shot at making the playoffs. The Liberty seems like a more apt comparison.
Chargers over Broncos
How do the Chargers always seem to have such a talented team and lose games like this? Rivers had a bad game throwing 2 interceptions and they never came back from a 14-0 first quarter deficit. Melvin Gordon came back and they gave him the ball 12 times and he only got 31 yards out of it. Not what you want to see. The Chargers have a home game against the Steelers and their 3rd string quarter back, so they’ll probably right the ship this week. The Broncos have the Titans in Denver and it seems like they win when Phillip Lindsay has a good game, so hopefully for them that happens again.
Another case in which the team that I compared to a DSFL team beats the team that I compared to an NSFL team. I think when I do this next year for the start of the 2020 season I will make all teams NSFL teams to make it a bit easier. Too late for that this season.
Cowboys over Packers
After a hot start the Cowboys, much like the Ravens are starting to come back down to earth. Prescott threw 3 interceptions and the Cowboys were playing from behind the entire game. They have the Jets this week, so that should be an easy victory. They definitely aren’t the best team in the NFC like some people wanted to claim after the early start. The Packers continue to look great and don’t have to rely on Aaron Rodgers to win them games. They are 4-0 when Rodgers has less than 250 passing yards. They have a good matchup on Monday night against the Lions this week that will be an early indicator of the front runner in the division.
The Hawks (Packers) and Copperheads (Cowboys) faced off once in Season 17 and the results was similar to this one.
Chiefs over Colts
The Colts might have shown the NFL the formula to beat the Chiefs. Control the clock and hope Patrick Mahomes hurts his ankle so he isn’t as effective at passing. While that second part is just a joke the controlling the clock part is definitely important. Keeping the Chiefs offense off the field is definitely an important factor in why the Colts were able to win this game. The Colts are on bye this week, but at 3-2 are definitely competing with the Texans for the AFC South at the moment. The Jaguars and Titans aren’t too far behind, but those 2 teams are definitely the front runners at the moment. The Chiefs welcome another AFC South team in the Texans this week in what most people assume will be a shoot out of massive proportions, which just makes me think it will be a defensive battle as that is generally what happens when everyone thinks a shoot out is coming in the NFL.
The Outlaws (Chiefs) beat the Hawks (Colts) in Season 17. Not what happened here.
49ers over Browns
The 49ers just came out and completely dominated the Browns. It wasn’t close. Mayfield was 8-22 for 100 yards and 2 interceptions. That’s just terrible. Coming off a big win against the Ravens I thought this game would be more competitive. The Browns are home against the Seahawks this week, and I have no idea which team will show up? The team that just got almost shut out by the 49ers or the team that beat the Ravens? My guess is the former. What a disappointment the Browns are to many fans who had very high hopes. The 49ers travel to LA to face the division rival Rams in what should be one of the better matchups of the week. Could the 49ers really give the Rams their 3rd loss in a row? That would be pretty shocking.
The Liberty (49ers) face off with the Otters (Browns) only once in Season 17 and the Liberty did win that game. I however seem to have completely underestimated the 49ers. They are a very good team and their comp to the Liberty is obviously wrong. Same with the Browns and the Otters. The Browns are not nearly as good as I thought they would be this season.
So that’s the NFL Week 5 Recap. As usual, a lot of great games last week, and a lot of wrong picks for me. Hopefully this week will be better. I tried to incorporate a bit of Week 6 preview into my recaps for each team to give a little bit of reasoning behind my upcoming picks as I thought that might be interesting. Since the Thursday night game already happened, I won’t be including that here, but I did unsurprisingly have the Patriots winning.
