Being born in Austria the sport of football is just associated to soccer. You grow up chasing the round ball all over the field and try to score with almost every part of your body, except your hands.
But at one, almost random, time in the year you could – even here in the small country in Europe – recognize that there is some big event coming up. The news hardly ever reported about a sport also called football. Except one time in the year, at the beginning of February, shortly after the best ski racers challenge the Streif in Kitzbühel.
Some rather weird named teams - at least to what we are used – face off in the biggest yearly held sports event, the Superbowl. At this time in the year, you are reminded that there is something bigger, more spectacular, than what you are used to.
After years of just following the Superbowl for some odd reason, you want to learn more about the sport that thrills just once a year – there has to be more than that. The years passed and the media coverage grew into something to work with.
A really deep dive into the whole league came four years ago, after briefly following some games already the years before. Every year the interest peaked at a new high. And look where we are at now. Here is one of the prospects in this huge class of S22. Everything is still quite new and a bit strange.
With this post I want to welcome Michael Whiteblock to all of you. This is the proof, that you can also make it from a small country as Austria to one of the biggest and prestigious leagues, the NSFL (hopefully soon).
Fun Fact, Austria has one of the best American Football leagues in Europe and is constantly battling for the crown of the European Champion - the American Football pendant to the Champions League final (mostly Vienna Vikings or Swarco Raiders Tirol).
Currently there are two young Austrian prospects trying to get into the NFL via the NFL International Player Pathway Program, namely Sandro Platzgummer (RB) and Bernard Seikowitz (TE). But enough of Austrian NFL prospects, let’s hope we will hear a lot more of Michael Whiteblock in the NSFL in a view seasons.
