Eric Richards was at an autograph session with a bunch of fans at the Butchers practice field. He already had plenty of odd requests, including one to sign a woman's more private areas. He politely but frimly declined. He didn't like autographing body parts anyways, as the ink will eventually fade. It is while taking a water break that he saw one of the an extremely unusual looking young girl. She was fairly tall for her age, but slouched making her seem shorter. That was nothing however to her quite long and frog like tounge and large eyes making her look like a frog-human hybrid.
"Hey young lady I am taking a little water break at the moment, so if you coild wait until I am done quenching my thirst..." Eric said as he took another drink from his water bottle
"Umm hi Mr.Richards, my name is Tsuyu Asui, and I have been watching a lot of your games" Her voice was surprisingly gruff, it sounded like she had a cold but she showed no evidence of one "and I have been impressed with you are doing on the field, despite your teams record. I do believe the Butchers will get better with time"
"Tsuyu Asui....you from Japan?" Edic asked, the girl making him extremely curious. "That's an unusual name for the States"
"Why yes I am, but my family moved here to get a better life. 'Wide open spaces' my mom said." She then looked down to the ground "I do miss some of my friend though"
"I know how you feel" Eric said, smiling wistfully "I miss many of my friends from Sheperdsville Kentucky. It was hard for a small town kid like me to get used to big city life, but I am managing."
"Of course. I understand. Anyways I wrote about your stats in this journal." She hands him a journal with the words "my football observations" on it
"Wow you're going pretty in death" Eric said as he looked through the journal "some of these stats I didn’t even notice"
"Yeah stats are my bread and butter" She smiled "its aways fun for me to look through how each player is doing in thier respective categories" Eric quickly found the page about him and signed it before handing it back to her
"Consider that a gift for a nice chat" Eric said "now if you'll excuse me, I got more autographs to sign"
"Oh of course!" She bowed respectfully as Eric left to go do more autographs, and the next day he went on one of his trademark hikes through the hills and parks. Clair was at a expecting parents meeting and he was left to his own devices. He decided to take a shortcut through one of the parks when he saw Tsuyu again, writing in her journal as she watched a youth football league play.
"Hey what are you writing about this time?" He asked as he walked up to her. Upon seeing him, she immediately dropped her journal im shock before recovering and picking it back up again.
"W-well I am writing about different strategies to use on the field. I am not allowed to play in this league, so I just watch" She says somewhat sadly
"Let me guess: its because you are a girl right?" She nods as he sighs slightly "there was actually a girl on my high school team, a wide receiver."
"Seriously?" Tsuyu asked surprised "did she actually play?"
"Oh yeah, she caught quite a few touchdowns. It helped that she was the tallest girl in school at 6'3. Her name was Jill Queens. Only reason she didn't go play college football is that she wasn't really interested in it. A few schools did offer her though. I think she's a doctor now."
"Wow that is cool!" Tsuyu said "wide receiver huh..."
"Hey how about we see if we can get you on the team huh?"
"Umm sure I guess we can try" Tsuyu said nervously as they head to the field to talk to the coach, but are stopped by a woman who looked like the definition of a "soccer mom", or a mother who makes her kids get into sports to improve her image.
"Sorry no girls allowed on the team" she said with a scowl.
"Look...I am guessing Karen?" Eric asks, and she nods at that name "Listen Karen, you may force your kids to play sports just to get brownie points for your book club, but you shouldn't exclude people who want to get involved because you're afraid they will outshine your kids."
"Excuse me?!" She shrieked, making them both cover thier ears a bit "who do you think you are talking to me like that?!"
"My name is Eric Richards, Safety for the Chicago Butchers." He says as he looks her in the eyes "and how about this: if my friend here can catch a few passes, you consider her"
"You know what? I'll take that bet" he smiles smugly "if I win she can't come her anymore. If you win, she gets a spot on the team. Hell, I'll even let you have the league."
"You're pretty confident. I agree to those terms" Eric says as they shake hands, then whispers in Tsuyu's ears "just trust in your instincts and relax as the ball comes towards you, you'll be fine"
"O-ok I'll try my best" She says as she steps onto the field, puts her hair into a bun, and puts on the football uniform and helmet. Part of her was nervous, the other part was excited. She tried her best to calm those nerves as the balls came towards her. The first one was a simple 10 yard pass from the coach, who was an ex quarterback. She completed it with ease. Then the next was a 20 harder, again completed with relieve ease. "Hey I am actually not bad at this" she smiles.
Then it got tougher as Karen put more players in trying to stop her, but to no avail. When she completed a 40 yarder by running past the safety, Karen decided to do a 50 yarder, with all the defense near her. As the pass came out, she somehow managed to run past the defense and barely manage to catch it in the endzone. She got up and cheered her hear out as Eric raised his hands in victory.
"I think my father would love to run this league better thrn you ever could Karen" Eric smirked. "A bets a bet" Karen just threw her hands up in frustration as she and her son went to drive away. Tsuyu was officially made a part of the team as she hugged Eric.
"Thank you so much for doing this for me!" She said as she hugged him
"No need to thank me. Just prepare for practice in two days" Eric said as he left and went to call his dad Dean. "Hey dad do I have an opportunity for you..." he said as he went to continue his hike.
Unbeknownst to him, that girl will eventually play a larger role in football. But that my friends is a story for quite a few seasons down the road.
