Presented by Sakrosankt
Week 7
Minnesota Grey Ducks @ London Royals 37-7:
What a debut for Zed Keppler for the Minnesota Grey Ducks after the trade with the Portland Pythons. In Portland he was only third stringer, in his first game for Minnesota he showed what he is able to do. He is definitely the player of the game in this blowout win against the Royals, racking up 119 yards and a touchdown. The Grey Ducks made clear that they are the front runner for the division title, beating the current leader on the road in a stellar performance. It wasn’t only the run game that had a fabulous day, also Sim SnowBow and his wideouts played a formidable game, as did the defense with 5 sacks of 5 different players and an interception. London seemed to be not in the game at all for the whole 60 minutes. They didn’t play like a home team, and committed way too many penalties.
Myrtle Beach Buccaneers @ Norfolk Seawolves 6-9:
Myrtle Beach visiting Norfolk would have been the game of the week last year. They battled for the top of the division in the championship game last season, where Myrtle Beach came out as the winner and also lifted the Ultimini in the end. This season, the storyline is completely different. The Bucs started good into the season, but struggle since a few weeks. Norfolk on the other side couldn’t get it going the whole season. So what to expect from the revival of last year's championship game? I’d say at least more as we got. It was a close game, mostly because the big scoring never started. The only one scoring were the kickers, therefore the player of the game goes to the kicking GM bot Bauer for kicking the game winning field goal in overtime. The surprising thing about this game is, that the higher scoring half was the first one, I think no one would have thought that at half time. Kai Solarin, the kicker for Myrtle Beach, was the one to start scoring. He nailed a 43 yard FG in the first quarter. The second quarter was the time to shine for both, as Bauer made a 30 yarder and later Solarin took back the lead with an 18 yarder. Wait - an 18 yard field goal? Yes. The Myrtle Beach Buccaneers decided to not go for it with 1:47 on the clock in the first half on Norfolk’s 1-yard line. I mean, it’s a close game, but it’s still the first half and a tough spot for Norfolk to start if the touchdown doesn’t happen. I’d say sim gonna sim. The 6-3 halftime lead was equalized in the second half by Bauer with a 41 yard field goal with the first possession of the second half. Not much happening thereafter. Only notable thing is an interception by Ramos at midfield. Norfolk couldn’t move the ball and turned over on downs, which followed by a punt of the Bucs after also not being able to move the ball just the slightest. This led us to overtime, where a bad punt by Solarin led to Norfolk starting at midfield. This time, they managed to go halfway through the territory of Myrtle Beach and ended this disaster of a game with a 42 yard field goal to celebrate a 9-6 victory.
Tijuana Luchadores @ Portland Pythons 21-26:
The leader of the SFC visited an demoralized Python team, who just had to cope with two 1 point losses. The Pythons started strong, leaving nothing for the Luchadores before the half. Portland started with two field goals in the first quarter. The second quarter was the time for the interceptions. At first, Dawkins picked of Slothlisberger at their 49 yard line, which resulted in a touchdown by Petrongolo. In the next drive Mac Griddle picked off Slothlisberger in Python territory. They worked their way over to field goal range, but the 23 yard field goal try was missed. To round up the half and make up for the easy miss, Pseudo QB finished the half with a 52 yard field goal to extend the lead to 16-0. Coming out of the break, Pythons didn’t stop and continued to rack up points with a touchdown pass from O’Donnell to Snyder. This was enough for Tijuana, and they started to score. And how they did. After a rushing TD by Running Back, QB Slothlisberger also rushed for one to cut the lead to 23-14. And to make it 3, Slothlisberger found Jones in the endzone to make it 23-21. This short power play of Tijuana was too less to overcome Portland though, as they ended the game with a 46 yard field goal for the 26-21 score. Main contributor to the win was LB Omar Wright Jr, who racked up 17 tackles and a sack.
Kansas City Coyotes @ Dallas Birddogs 10-27:
In a clear 27-10 win of the Birddogs over Kansas City, the Coyotes could only compete with Dallas in the first half. They completely blow their 10-7 halftime lead and didn’t score a single point in the second half. Kansas City remains the only team, who is winless on the road. The player of the game in this matchup is Kichwa Jones, who rushed for 161 yards on only 18 carries. This is a crazy high 8.9 average. To be fair, one rush was for a 73 yard gain. But without that one run, it would still be over 5 yards per carry. The more interesting question is, how is a 73 yard gain no touchdown? That’s due to John Bois hunting down Jones with only one yard short of the goal line. The touchdown got Scabbia after a pass from Jack. Jones can still be proud to have accomplished the biggest gain in this season - by far.
Week 8
London Royals @ Kansas City Coyotes 21-24:
As mentioned in week 7 review for Kansas City, they lost all their away games. On another note, they also are the only team unbeaten in home games so far. And they continued that streak in week 8, setting themselves to 4-4 against the division leading Royals. The game for Kansas City was similar to their Dallas match. They started strong in the first half and fell off a cliff in the second one. It seems to be a pattern in Kansas City, maybe they should train towards endurance for the upcoming tests. As already mentioned, the Coyotes started strong. The player of the game, RB Andrew Nova, caught the Royals defense off guard and scored two touchdowns within 2 minutes in the first quarter. This head start left the Royals in shambles in the first half. Nova’s RB partner Kevin Fakon scored another touchdown before halftime. This game was a one sided affair so far. But the Royals refused to take a blowout and came strong out of the half. On the other side it seemed Kansas City had not much more business to do on the field. Nova fumbled on the first possession, which led to a touchdown pass from Jack to Kaepercolin. The Coyotes countered with a field goal to start the fourth quarter. The rest of the game, all they did was fumbling and turning the ball over. The consequence were two more Royals touchdowns. If you counted scores, you’ll get to 24-21, which is the final one. Kansas City fell into lethargy in the second half, but came out short with the win nevertheless.
Tijuana Luchadores @ Norfolk Seawolves 33-23:
Tijuana travelled to Norfolk to take on the the Seawolves on the road. In this game, two teams face each other who practice and play the two QB system, as both of them have two maxed QBs to utilize. In this matchup, Tijuana’s game manager showed how to use it best. Both QBs threw over 100 yards. Jim Waters completed 9 passes, 3 of them were touchdowns. This efficiency is insane, definitely worth a player of the game. Waters was it to start the scoring with a TD pass to Kingston. Norfolk equalized immediately by a Skrills rush for 52 yards. After an interception by Waters, the Seawolves took the lead with a field goal. But Waters made up for the mistake in the next drive and threw his second touchdown pass of the night, this time to Howlett. This score ended the first quarter. In the second one, it’s once again Tijuana to score, Running Back rushed to extend the lead. Just before halftime Norfolk cut the lead by a touchdown pass from Ramza to Matthews. This should be the last big score for Norfolk in this game. While Tijuana scored two more times - a rush touchdown by Gilbert and the third TD pass from Waters to TE Ethan Smith - Norfolk only got into field goal range. They managed to score two kicks in the second half, what was too less to compete with the fire power offense of the Luchadores.
Portland Pythons @ Myrtle Beach Buccaneers 13-16:
The Bucs were at home on a mission to reassert themselves as the favorite of the season. With the Pythons, they got a struggling team as opponent. A lead by a field goal was the only points Myrtle Beach allowed in the first half. Themselve, they got a touchdown by Ayers and three field goals for a 16-3 halftime lead. If you checked the final score you already can see what happened afterwards. The Bucs didn’t get a single point in the second half, but held the Pythons to only 10 more points, which secured the win. The Myrtle Beach RBs rushed for 128 and 126 yards, and Ayers also got the touchdown. Combined with kicker Kai Solarin, this made the win happen.
Dallas Birddogs @ Minnesota Grey Ducks 21-24:
Minnesota at home is a tough matchup for anyone. This time, the Birddogs tried to steal a win and bring it home to Dallas. This was a highly competitive matchup and a thrilling game. The Grey Ducks were able to pull out another W and take over the lead in the NFC. Player of the game is RB Kichwa Jones with 3 touchdowns, leading to all 21 points scored by Dallas. Ok, kicker Boomski also made the XP, but he wouldn’t have been able to do so without Jones scoring first. On the other side of the ball, and on the other team, Dex Kennedy had a monster performance and showed up big with 11 tackles and 3 sacks.
Minnesota started with the first good drive and finished it with a touchdown pass from SnowBow to Sakura. Then the beginning of many highlights for Jones started. He rushed for 61 yards for his first touchdown of the evening. The next score was another Jones rush, which was equalized by a SnowBow pass to Hood before halftime. Boomski had the chance to take the lead for Dallas with 21 seconds to go, but he missed a 30 yard field goal. The first score in the second half was a field goal for Minnesota, which quickly was countered with the third touchdown of the night for Jones. Dallas played well on defense to secure the lead, but on offense a mistake happened with only 4 minutes to play. Monty Jack was intercepted by Thornton deep in their own territory. Minnesota rushed twice, with the second one for a touchdown by Keppler. This score was too much to overcome for Dallas, and they had to bow their heads to the Grey Ducks. Overtime would have happened, if Boomski’s 30 yard kick would have been converted earlier in the game.
Week 9
London Royals @ Tijuana Luchadores 3-38:
London had lost all of their last three games and had to travel to the top dogs of the DSFL in week 9. There wasn’t much for them to get in Tijuana, all they did score was a field goal for the 3-0 lead. Then the Luchadores started scoring and kept doing so, without any further chance for London to counter it. Richard Gilbert rushed for over 100 yards and 2 touchdowns as did Running Back, definitely the players of the game.
Kansas City Coyotes @ Norfolk Seawolves 23-28:
Another away game for the Coyotes meant to be another loss for them. The deciding factor in the end is the effectiveness of the QB play. While Covington III and Glassley both threw an interception and no touchdown, Ramza passed for 2 touchdowns and Norfolk threw no pick in the game. Looking at the stat sheet after the game, some weird things can be noticed. Kansas City had almost double the yards (395) of Norfolk (202). Norfolk only had 53 passing yards. Funnily, in those 53 yards are 2 passing touchdowns. Both recorded by Ramza, who passed for a total of only 11 yards. Player of the game clearly is Ryan Scott, who recorded 8 tackles, 1 sack and an interception which he turned into a pick 6.
The game started with a score for Norfolk by Skrills, which was equalized by Nova in the next drive. A field goal for Kansas City got them the lead, but with an interception of Covington III by Brosely, Norfolk scored another touchdown before the half. In the second half Kansas City cut the lead to only one point by scoring another field goal. Ramza with his second touchdown extended the lead again. Right after the kickoff, Glassley was intercepted for the pick 6 from Scott, which was the nail in the coffin for the Coyotes. They got a field goal and a touchdown rush by Fakon, but that was too less to overcome their own failings. The next road game loss for the Coyotes, while Norfolk is only one win away to return to an even record.
Minnesota Grey Ducks @ Portland Pythons 16-21:
The Pythons had to start winning again to not fall behind in the NFC. On the other side, a win for Minnesota could bring an even bigger lead to their current top spot in the NFC. The game started perfect for Portland. LB Kackpoo sacked SnowBow on the very first snap. Due to that pressure, SnowBow threw an interception soon after, caught by Mobley. This turnover resulted in the end in a touchdown by McZeal and the early lead. A second interception close to the end of the first quarter by SnowBow was countered by the first interception from O’Donnell. The Grey Ducks were able to cut the lead to 3-7 after a successful kicking attempt. Same scoring then again, touchdown for Portland - a O’Donnell pass to Okusi - and a field goal for Minnesota. This closes the first half with a score of 14-6 for the home team. In the third quarter another deja vu. Touchdown by Portland, the second rushing score for McZeal, and a field goal for Minnesota. In the last stint Minnesota wasn’t able to score more than one touchdown, so the Pythons win this meeting 21-16. The game winner is McZeal with his two rushes, and a solid defensive performance led by Kackpoo and Mobley.
Myrtle Beach Buccaneers @ Dallas Birddogs 20-25:
In this SFC division duell, two win needy teams clashed together. And it’s the home team again - as in all week 9 matchups - which pulled off the win. The major reason for this win was a furious start into the second half. At halftime, the Birddogs were trailing by 10 points at 13-3. Coming out of the break they didn’t start any good either, as they had to punt after a three and out. But the defense showed up. An interception by d’Alcott could be turned into points via a field goal. A good special team play, letting the Bucs start at their own 6 yard line, set up the defensive play of the evening. A sack by Colt Mendoza in the endzone resulted in a safety. This was the turning point, as the following possessions also ended in a successful field goal attempt. After the next three and out, the Birddogs finally got their first touchdown of the game and took the lead. Another interception from Ramos picked by McGullager resulted in the second touchdown, this time it was Kichwa Jones rushing for the score. The touchdown for Myrtle Beach came too late to change anything in the outcome.
Week 10
Norfolk Seawolves @ London Royals 17-13:
Two 4-5 teams faced each other in week 10 to fight their way back to a perfectly balanced record. The one who is going to win this game will return back to an even .500 record. The better start, and overall the better ending, had Norfolk. Tequila Sunrise racked up 111 yards and two touchdowns, and started scoring early in the first half. Both touchdowns came before halftime, as all points for Norfolk did. London didn’t score in the first at all, leaving all their points to the second half. Their scoring wasn’t strong enough to overcome a 17 point deficit. In their last drive they managed to get to midfield, but an interception from Jack by Brosley clinched the game for the Seawolves.
Dallas Birddogs @ Portland Pythons 24-21:
In this thriller the Birddogs visited the Pythons. The first matchup was a one sided show, where the Pythons were able to travel back to Portland with a win. This time, it was a closer fight and as in the first meeting, the away team was able to get the win. With this win, Dallas kept the one game lead over the Seawolves and the resulting 2nd place in the division. The very next matchup is those two teams battling for the 2nd place in the SFC. Whereas the Pythons stay at their 4 wins. This is enough in the NFC to tie for the 2nd place, as they share the record with the London Royals and Kansas City Coyotes. Back to the game, how was Dallas able to steal the win from the Pythons? Everything started off good for the home team, steadily scoring touchdowns in the first half and keeping the Birddogs to only 2 field goals. Themselves, they were able to score three touchdowns. The first score for them was a pick six by Mac Mobley at midfield. George O’Donnell and Joseph Petrongolo rushed each for a touchdown, which led to a comfortable 21-6 lead. But as so many times throughout this DSFL season, a team stayed completely scoreless in the second half and blew the lead. This time it was the Pythons doing so. Two touchdowns by the Birddogs in the second half, one with a successful 2 point conversion tied the game. With only 22 seconds left on the clock, Boomski had the chance to become the game winner if he hits the 53 yard field goal. He did, leaving Portland in shambles after a disastrous second half.
Tijuana Luchadores @ Myrtle Beach Buccaneers 17-14:
When the Luchadores face the Bucs, a thrilling game can be expected. It seems Tijuana has Myrtle Beach’s number, as they successfully pull out another win against them. The Buccaneers fell to the very last position of the SFC, which continues the big fall of last years champion. The game started good for the Bucs, but somehow they forgot how to score points after heading into the locker at halftime. This is the second game in a row, where the home team blew a comfortable lead in the second half while staying scoreless. In the first half, Nicholas Ayers was able to score twice, giving a 14-3 halftime lead to the Bucs. For Tijuana, in fact, all points except one field goal can be related back to an interception by Ramos. The field goal in the first half for Tijuana was set up after an interception by Porter. The field goal to 14-9 came also after an interception by Hexagon. And to make it a completely lost game for Ramos, Hexagon intercepted him right after he got the ball back a second time, this time for a pick six. This was enough for the Luchadores to pull out the win. Hexagon with two interceptions is for sure the player of the game, next to his turnovers he also racked up 14 tackles and 2 passes defensed.
Kansas City Coyotes @ Minnesota Grey Ducks 3-48:
The Coyotes tried another time to get their first road win of the season. But it didn’t seem like they really tried. In a 48-3 beatdown, all they could do is to score a late fourth quarter field goal. Reginald Covington III played his worst game of the season by throwing 4 interceptions. On the other side, Sim SnowBow knew how to take advantage of the turnovers and finished the game with 3 passing touchdowns. Jamar Lackson showed also a great performance, finishing with over 100 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Grey Ducks extend their lead in the NFC to 2 games, heading into the final 4 games with a 6-4 record. The Coyotes are still in second place in an open division with a 4-6 record, tied with the other two teams. The winless Kansas City on the road shows other faces of itself at home, where they are still unbeaten. If they can continue to keep this up, they have the best chances to make the playoffs next to the Grey Ducks.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"] London Spotlight[/div]
This spotlight is going to be somewhat different that those previous. This time around we bring you an interview with Royals prospect and future NSFL star slyphreni. Though we’ll get to that a bit later. First, let’s take a look at where the Royals stand in only their second season as a DSFL franchise. In the beginning, things were looking good for London, starting the season 3-0. However, they would go on to win only 1 of their last 7 games.
Of course, the first thing we need to do is take a look at the team's roster. Being a DSFL team, it’s more difficult for the Royals to retain star talent. However, with that being said, the Royals do have some notable standouts. Of course one of those is the presumptive number one overall pick in S23 Greedy Sly. They also kept all 3 of their top wideouts from S22, Susan Cash Jr, Nick Kaepercolin, and Blake Alexander. Also having running back Danny King should open up the field. Tight end Donatello Arrabiata is one of the highest TPe players at his position. Arguably the most important aspect still on the team is quarterback Colby Jack. Overall, the Royals, at least on paper, have one of the most potent offenses in the DSFL.
Though, even with the promising weapons on offense, the first major shortcoming for the royals is immediately apparent. From a defensive point of view, the Royals have significant holes at nearly every position. Lack of defensive versatility is likely what has led the Royals to their current standings.
Another thing to keep in mind, the Royals could very well have run into some poor luck, much like the Austin Copperheads. When we look at everything together, the Royals schedule has been rather lenient. They have also maintained a fair number of close games.
When we look at the future of the London Royals, things don’t look particularly fantastic. It’s likely they’ll see the remainder of their star prospects be called up. The most likely candidates of which include their wide receiver corps. If this is indeed the case, London will have to completely rebuild their offense. With that in mind, not all is hopeless. There’s a pretty good chance for the Royals to make the playoffs. Their final four games are at home against the Pythons, at Myrtle Beach, home against the Birddogs, and closing the season at home against Minnesota. If they win against Minnesota and Portland the odds are in their favor for a playoff run. Though that is not an easy ask, going against two of the best teams in Dallas and Minnesota to close the season is certainly tough.
Now, let’s move on to my interview with up and coming superstar Slypherni!
1. How would you describe your experience in the DSFL this season?
Man, what an absolute roller coaster it has been. Prior to the draft, I had no expectations that I might go first overall… I thought maybe first round, but certainly not the first pick off the board. It was an absolute shock, but an incredible ride ever since.
London has been incredibly inviting, and allowed me the ability to begin learning the various aspects of the League I was interested in starting on Day 1. They’ve developed a great locker room in such a short amount of time, for an expansion team it’s really impressive. I’m excited to now be working with them to maintain and expand that group as we prepare for the Season 24 DSFL draft.
This particular season we started out very strong, but have had a rough slide of late. We’re hopeful to see that change, as we make a last second push to make it into the playoffs. Who knows what the sim will do, but I’m super proud of all our guys for the incredible work they’ve put in during this season, and can’t wait to see where they end up in the NSFL.
2. What one thing have you enjoyed most about the league?
Big Edd.
Behind him….. And that’s a lot of behind mind you… Just the Community here at large. This league is full of incredible people with a wide variety of gifts and talents. I love seeing how they all utilize them in their own way, it's very inspiring as a new user to the site and drives me to do more.
I’ve also enjoyed the level of interaction between the Head Office and the league. It’s refreshing to see the level of transparency they maintain with the league members, and while I appreciate they don’t let us know everything…. They do a great job at keeping us updated on their current agenda.
Finally, the various locker rooms across the teams of the league are fantastic. I’ve enjoyed all I’ve been invited to thus far, and look forward to joining more soon. It’s always exciting to meet new and fantastic people.
3. What do you think has contributed to your team's record?
There’s a lot of factors to this of course. Our division is particularly competitive, and we’ve played some very close games. I think there’s a few we’d like to have back for certain, but on the whole we’ve had some pretty exciting results as well. A lot of people will point to call ups and send downs as the leading factor to DSFL success, and while that’s true it’s nothing something that overly concerns me. We’ve got a great group in London and I’m excited to see how we finish out the season.
4. Has your team's lack of success influenced how you feel about the league?
Well, we still have a shot at the playoffs, so we’re not out of it yet… but absolutely not otherwise. London has been incredible, and they’re building something there that I am really excited to be a part of. Regardless of whether I get called up to the NSFL next season or not, I look forward to being a part of that community for as long as they’ll have me.
Winning or Losing in the DSFL should matter less in my opinion anyways, as it’s meant to be a developmental league. I’d encourage everyone, enjoy your time in the DSFL and have fun with it. Meet a bunch of people, learn new things, make fun of Big Edd, and don’t worry so much about your record… It's a league meant to be fun, so enjoy it.
5. Are you looking forward to moving up to the NSFL level?
Absolutely. I of course have no idea at this point in time who I’ll end up playing for, but I’m eager to find out who it is. I have a very team-first mentality, so I’m open to coming up immediately if that is what the team needs, or willing to stay down a season if that lines up with the team's timeline better. I know London would appreciate the latter if it were possible, but I’ll do what is best for my team.
As for eventually moving up to the NSFL, I’m very excited for it. Obviously it's what all of us are working towards in the DSFL and the chance to finally make the jump is going to be awesome! I look forward to getting to know and working with my new teammates.
6. Do you think the Royals will see a bounce back in S23?
I’m excited to see how we do moving forward! London has proven to be some of the best talent evaluators in the DSFL, in their short time in the league and I’m excited to meet the next batch of Royals they’ll bring into the fold. Look for us to be making big plays and pushing for and Ultimini next season and the seasons to come!
7. How do you see your first season in the NSFL playing out?
Tough to say exactly, I’m open to staying down another year if that’s what my team needs. That said, I’m just really excited to get into their locker room and get to know the people I’m going to battle with every week. The team dynamic is perhaps one of the most exciting things about this league and I can’t wait to get to experience that at the NSFL level. So regardless if that's via me staying down a season, or moving up immediately, I’m ready to be a part of that environment.
