When it comes to love in the NSFL, there’s one couple that stands out most to me. It’s a tale as old as time. A man meets a man and everything he thought he knew about himself is flipped on its head.
“Why do I feel the way that I do?”
“Why do I feel this way now, and for this person?”
They’d met years ago when they were teammates in the GOMHL. That’s when Raven and Dwyer knew the other person was who they’d spend the rest of their natural life with.
As the years past, their bond grew stronger, deeper, and more mature. It was during their stint together in Baltimore when Dwyer popped the question. Raven remembers like yesterday when Dwyer took him to their old stomping grounds. The Bad Jokes Club was the setting for their first date and countless laughs and memories over the years.
“Raven, I should have realized from the beginning that this is who I’ve always been. I should have known every time my heart was broken that you would take care of me if I would only ask. So, I’m asking you now; will you marry me?”
No decision had to be made on Raven’s part. It was a tearful, resounding “YES!”
As the rain poured all around them, their love for each other kept them warm and safe.
It wouldn’t always be this poetic. Life as we know, is not a derivative Lifetime movie that shamelessly rips off a Nicholas Sparks book. The distance was as loud as it was far, but not between their hearts. No, for as they stood worlds apart, the timezones and sleep schedules began to pull and threaten a seemingly perfect romance.
Two years transpired before the pain became unbearable. Dwyer and Raven knew that if their love were to survive, they had to make a choice.
“Raven, I hear the League is planning to expand,” Dwyer said over the phone. “This may be our chance to finally be together forever.”
“Are you sure you want to take on the responsibility?,” Raven asked in a soft voice.
“I will do whatever I have to do to be with you. I’m tired of feeling so far away from you.”
Raven and Dwyer immediately filed papers with the Head Office. They were intent on running a football team together.
“Dwyer, I want to move to a place where it’s sunny. I want to be somewhere where we will be accepted for who we are. I want to live somewhere where our future children can play outside and feel the warmth of the sun on their soft, supple skin.”
Dwyer thought about it for a moment and replied, “Have you ever heard of Hawaii?”
Two weeks transpired when the phone rang in Dwyer’s mom’s basement.
“Dwyer?,” a feminine voice called out. “This is Bex. The league has decided to approve your request for an expansion team. Where are you wanting to set up operations?”
“Well,” Dwyer replied. “Raven and I were hoping to start a team in Honolulu.”
“Honolulu would be a great market, Dwyer. I think they’re starved for professional sports out there and opposing teams would certainly enjoy their visits out there. Will Raven be making the move?”
“Yes, he will be. We are both very excited to finally be with each other again. You know we’re thinking about starting a family,” Dwyer answered.
Bex smiled and said, “We are all very happy for you guys. I’ll call you sometime next week to go over the details. For now, you guys should celebrate.”
Dwyer couldn’t believe it. He would be able to join his lover in overseeing their own football team. No more FaceTime calls at 3:00 AM. No more voicemails on birthdays. No more cologne-soaked envelopes. They would be together just as they had dreamed for years. The time had finally arrived. He plugged his phone in beside his bed and laid down. His eyes were closed when the phone lit up and shook violently on the nightstand.
Dwyer picked it up and answered the incoming call.
It was Raven.
“So? What do we know?”
“We did it, sweetheart. We actually did it,” Dwyer replied. “Bex will call us up next week to go over details. We have a football team in Hawaii.”
Dwyer could hear Raven start to cry on the other end.
“I’m so happy,” Raven said.
Dwyer smiled and replied, “I told you it would happen. I’ll start looking at properties. Do you have anything in mind?”
“I want a yard. For the children. I’d like a room big enough to host Dungeons and Dragons.”
“What about a pool?”
“Dwyer, why would we need a pool with all the beaches in Hawaii?”
Dwyer laughed and conceded, “I guess I never thought about that.”
“Hey, Raven,” Dwyer asked with a smile?
“Yes?”
“How many people would come if we had our wedding at the stadium?”
“I’m pretty sure we’d be at max capacity.”
The two men talked for a few more minutes and said good-bye. Dwyer put his phone back on the nightstand and turned out the lights. It was the dawn of a new chapter in his life. He was not afraid of the road ahead, but excited. The team would need some time to become competitive but as long as he had Raven by his side, he knew that time would fly right on by.
That, dear reader is the tale of how the Honolulu Hahalua came to be. Raven and Dwyer did indeed get married at the stadium. I was one of tens of thousands in attendance and I am very grateful to have been there. I’ve never seen a love more pure or sacred in my time on this earth. As for the Hahalua, well there is still room to improve. But with Raven and Dwyer happily working arm-in-arm, I already consider it one of the greatest success stories in the league. Raven and Dwyer are still trying to find a way to have a baby naturally together, but I know their resolve knows no equal. One day, they will shock the world and bring life into this world.
