So, after almost a season after I said I was going to this, here it finally his. After doing some analysing on the DSFL 1OA picks and how they fared in the NSFL draft its time to do the opposite and compare where the 1OA pick in the NSFL draft went in their DSFL draft. We all know that drafting is very in the moment and based on needs, further being influenced by the different styles of competitiveness that are present in the DSFL and NSFL. On top of that, I probably should have added the amount of people in each class but all were pretty much near the top of their class and unlike the previous article, this is the players moving up so it isn’t really that important as the number of picks increased speaks for itself. Also thrown in is a graph and write up on the positions of these 1OA picks over the last 20 seasons.

It is to the surprise of only a few people that the data looks the way it does. The players drafted in the DSFL are largely based on their activeness/engagement they have shown and only earn tpe gains but it goes without saying that the users who are most engaged with the league are more likely to be those that earn well and become a known name throughout the league. In the last 20 seasons, all but two players were drafted in within the first 10 picks of their DSFL draft. That represents a 90% chance that the 1OA pick in the NSFL draft comes from the top 10 picks in the DSFL draft, demonstrating that the DSFL draft has a high ability to find the gems of the class. In support of this, over the last 20 seasons, 6 players have managed to be the 1OA pick in both their DSFL and NSFL draft, which at 30% of players, serves as more reinforcement that the talent of users shines early and the DSFL GM’s know the talent they are drafting.
On the flip side of this, there remains two players, Brock Landers and Colt Mendoza. Unfortunately, I don’t know anything about Brock Landers and his story, and his players is seemingly no longer in the league according to the tracker search for his name. Colt Mendoza however, it’s the epitome of what it means to be a user-based pick. iSteg was not the highest TPE even when drafted as the 1OA in the NSFL, but he demonstrated such a high level of dedication to this league with his sim testing experiments and analysis, giving insight into how the sim works and what is stupidly strong, looking at you 79 speed QB abusers, and that OL is a position that can matter. That, within 2 seasons, goes to speak as to why such an incredible rise in the draft was in order. Not every day does that rise occur but it is not everyday a user like iSteg comes around to drop that many knowledge bombs in the league.
The last point of interest for me was that there was two players who positioned switched from the DSFL draft who ended up as the 1OA in the NSFL draft. One of these being Brock Landers, will a massive jump going from Quarterback to Receiver and then Sam Torenson, who is now an elite Running Back who swapped from Defensive Tackle.

As pictured above, 9 positions have gotten a 1OA pick in the NSFL draft. Linebackers are the only position to have received 4 number one picks, but their latest was in season 19. Safety, Running back and Wide Receiver all have 3, but safety has had two 1OA picks in the last 3 years, showing a recent desire in this position whilst a Running Back and Wide Receiver haven’t received a 1OA pick since season 16 and 15 respectively, quickly closing in to 10 seasons potentially passing before one is picked, especially with the higher focus on defence in the present. Following on from this, Cornerback and Defensive Tackle have 2 picks each whilst Defensive End, Quarterback and Tight End have one on the board. There is yet to be an Offensive Linemen or a Kicker/Punter to be taken 1OA and that will remain extremely unlikely to happen.
So that wraps up a kinda quick look into the reverse of a probably long and forgotten article piece of mine. Drafting history is always interesting and shows a little snapshot of how the league shaped and developed over time, where teams were most interested in and any patterns that we may be able to see continue. Whilst it doesn’t explain why at all, it is an easy, low-level look that makes the extensive history of this league much easier to understand and swallow.
