Currently the Royals sit in tied for 2nd place in the DSFL North after Thursdays victory against the Norfolk Seawolves. The season started rough for us rookies in the win/loss column. A lot of us were expecting to be front runners for a championship as the team made it to the Ultimini and were returning the majority of their capped players, including #1 pick Greedy Sly. The defense was stacked and the offense only lost WR Nick Kaepercolin. His shoes were supposed to be filled by myself (Gunner Thorbjornsson) and Tre’Darius J’Vathon. Everywhere else on the field, the team was stronger. Now, I acknowledge the season is far from over and a few results could catapult the Royals into the final playoff spot, but this column is going to focus on the rookie’s impact to the team off the field and behind the scenes.
Right from the jump, it appeared the Royals had done well in drafting highly active users who were not just interested grabbing up that valuable early TPE, but also wanted to understand the intricacies of the sim. To them, learning how the sim worked would enable them to build their player in the best way to succeed. Credit due to GM Sylphreni who saw this interest and started up his own little program, aptly named simmer school. From here, we were able to gain access to the DDSPF16 and start messing around. Syl created a weekly contest for anyone interested on the team. The winner gets to dawn the specific “Based Sim God” discord roll for the week and a permanent emote added to the chat. These contests have helped me, and I assume the other rookies as well, quickly learn the pros and cons of different strategies and depth chart adjustments. Sure, the bragging rights for winning are also nice.
The first contest was to maximize our team’s capacity to win without star running back Danny King for our week Week 5 & 6 matchups against Tijuana and Portland. Please note, these strategies were not used for our sims as were far too green to trust at this point. Although, maybe they should’ve been as we ended up losing both games, but I digress. The winner was the user who had the two highest win percentages. Crow19, aka Busch Light, was the inaugural winner of the Sim God title and picked a can of cold refreshing Busch Light as his custom emote. Perfection. It was seen throughout the week and is still used as teammates cheers each other on good plays and pick each other up on bad plays. Booze is great at both. His results were 62% against Tijuana and 73% against Portland. After typing these results, I am reconsidering my previous statement of “maybe they should’ve been used” to “they definitely should’ve been used”. But hey, we’re still young cocky rookies with plenty to learn.
The second contest was a new shinny 500 TPE running back that HO was going to allow us to use for the game against Portland. The challenge was to provide the single highest fantasy point output using standard PPR scoring. First guesses were a winner would be around the 50 point mark, but myself, aka Gunner Thorbjornsson, and abh89, aka Harrison Andrews, got into a serious battle that ranged into the upper 60’s. My point total of 65.3 held on for a few days, but Harrison jumped it by .1. Not to be outdone, I was able to use most of my July 5th hangover for a good cause and put together a nice 69.5 point tally. My 500 TPE running back put together 326 rushing yards on 4 TDs, while tacking on another 29 receptions yards, on 4 grabs, with 1 being a TD. I went for the SpongeBob finger gun meme and have promptly been gunned down multiple times for a much needed humility check. Look, I’m a flashy, diva WR. It comes with the territory. I’m a peacock, you gotta let me fly!

The third contest was a favor for Chicago as they got molly whopped 52-0 in their first game against the Wraiths. The task was simple, beat Yellow Knife and score as many points as possible. It's not "over" per say, but abh89, aka Harrison Andrews, has an absolute worldy with Chicago winning 72-16. Good luck to the other students, but Harrison should already plan his emote and have sweet dreams his coming Sim God role. I'm going to be bold and just give him a premature congratulations.
These contests will continue throughout the remainder of the season and more Londoners will be able to wear the prestigious badge and come up with their own emotes. However, this simmer school was only the beginning. Syl, in his infinite wisdom, saw fit to bring four of us rookies into the War Room as of last week. Myself being one, I also want to give a shoutout to Busch Light, Harrison Andrews, and Frank Michell as the other members who joined. What started as a friendly competition has turned into a much more productive and engaging experience. We’ve been assisting with exhibition sims and strategies to lighten the load on the more senior War Room members so they can focus on the bigger picture of the team. You may be thinking to yourself, well this explains why the Royals turnaround from 1-5. However, we’ve only been at this for 2 weeks and yes, while we’re 3-1 in during our time in the War Room, full credit cannot be taken by us rookies. The senior War Room members oversee all our decisions and have the final say in game day depth chart and strategy. So while I’d like to claim credit for the turnaround, I’m going to remain humble and say it was a team effort. Just kidding, I’m a diva wide receiver. It’s clear I’m the greatest sim prodigy of all time. Full stop.
Anyone else curious what full stop truly means? It’s a saying that I’ve seen thrown around here a lot and at first I thought it just meant “end of conversation” as in fully stop the conversation, it’s over, drop the mic, he’s dead already, have mercy he’s got children. Then I looked it up and it’s actually quite boring. It’s just what the British call the little dot at the end of every sentence. It’s a synonym for what American’s call a period. They say car park, we say parking lot. They say maths, we say math. They say the “c” word, we don’t. They say full stop, we say period. So from here on out, the only people who should be able to say “full stop” are those on the London Royals as it’s our native tongue. The rest of you lot can go back to your periods. Full stop.
Closing out, I’d like to once again thank Syl for seeing our potential and showing faith in us rookies. It’s been a fun ride and I look forward to continuing throughout the seasons. My opinion of the other Royal rookies could not be any higher and I’d go to war with them at a moments notice. Any NSFL team looking for new users ready to step up should start their search with the London Royals.
