Good Afternoon all,
Let's talk about how to be a good team mate. It is a vastly under rated part of being successful in this sport and overall in life.
Number one thing for me, is pull your weight. Does that mean being the best at all times? No! It really means to always try to do your best. Do what you can to help the team be successful. That might be something as simple as encouraging others. Or maybe as a wide receiver you throw a key block. Or better yet, not making that silly mistake and holding that guy when all you need to do is impede his path a little so the running back can bounce to the outside and make a much needed first down. No one expects perfection from any player all the time(or ever really). But you need effort and to do your job with the most energy you can.
Be accountable. This one is huge. Again, no one expects perfection. We are all going to make mistakes at different points and of differing severity. Be aware of your mistakes and take ownership. If you miss your assignment, step up and take the responsibility for it. We aren't going to hate you forever because you make a mistake. On the other hand, we will not enjoy being around you if you constantly act like you never mess up, but we all do. Nobody wants you to act like you are perfect, we just want accountability. Own any and all mistakes, take compliments, and remember it is a team game. No matter how good you did, it took others to get that play to happen.
Support your team mates. This is ultimate team sport. No one player wins any game. It takes a team of people to get to that position where that player can elevate and make a play to help get the win. Encourage your guys when they are struggling, remind them they made it this far and to keep the grind. If they are having a good day, congratulate them and cheer and celebrate with them. Be happy for their success. Your day will come, so keep working and be a good team mate. You never how one little word of encouragement can change someones game, day, week, month, or even their life. Be a positive role model for all. Even on your bad days, don't let your mood sour the way you interact with those around you.
Be thankful. Remember how you got where you are. Don't forget all the sacrifices others have made to allow you to be where you are. That includes your family, any one of them who helped you in any way. Your teachers, coaches, doctors, and all the other professionals along the way keeping you alive and healthy enough to make it to the big leagues. All of your friends along the way, helping keep your mind in the right place and eyes on the prize. And of course, all of your team mates along the way, your rivals helping push you, role models you look up to and strive to be like some day. Remember where you came from, but keep striving to be a better version of you.
In the end, to be a good team mate, you need to be supportive, humble, the hardest worker you can be and ultimately treat others the way you want them to treat you. If you want people to think of you in a good way, try treating them better and see how they remember you. Keep grinding and do amazing things out there.
