First of all I'm pointing out that this is the class of S23, if you have S23 in parentheses on your player page you'll probably be written about. But if you have S22, you won't be here. Maybe in a future media. How it will work is I'll go down the draft order for the DSFL in season 22 and compare that to their ISFL pick position, as well as write a few notes about them. At the end I'll have a conclusion going over the best steals and busts. I may or may be writing this just to find out how much of a steal I am.
P.S I'm writing this to find out how much of a steal I was AND to make money, get wrecked Deadly. Also the team listed next to the player is the ISFL team that originally drafted the player, not what team they are on now, just to be a little bit confusing.
Starting it off with the one, the only,
Greedy Sly, Offensive Line, Colorado Yeti
User: Sylphreni | DSFL Draft Position: 1 | ISFL Draft Position: 1 | TPE: 941 (7)
Plot twist! Greedy Sly isn't the top earner of season 23? Was he the class' first reach of the draft? Probably not. At the time, Sly was a Cornerback, the best one in his class. Cornerback is always one of the most needed positions, and Sylphreni was one of the most well known users in the league at the time. And clearly he was open to position switching, since now he's an offensive lineman. Just another reason why he was the first player drafted in both leagues.
Tyler Montain, Defensive Tackle, Austin Copperheads
User: Amidships | DSFL Draft Position: 2 | ISFL Draft Position: 2 | TPE: 1000 (1)
Second overall pick in both the DSFL and ISFL drafts, Tyler Montain is another monster of an earner, specifically the best one in the season 23 class. He's the only player in the class who's reached 4 digits of TPE, a major milestone for players. He's also the first player of the class to be drafted in a spot worse than his TPE level. Tyler Montain may have had an unlucky season this time around, but with earning like that there's no way that trend continues.
Adélie de Pengu, Linebacker, New Orleans Second Line
User: IsaStarcrossed | DSFL Draft Position: 3 | ISFL Draft Position: 24 | TPE: 962 (3)
Aleady the second Yeti player in the top three picks, and scariest penguin in the league. Adélie de Pengu was a great pick for the Norfolk Seawolves back in the day when they were still a Safety. You might be looking at that ISFL draft position wondering what happened, but fear not! Pengu was the GM of the New Orleans Second Line, and the fact that they had the last pick in the second round is good for them. Since then however, Isa has stepped down as NOLA GM, moved to the Yeti somehow, and position swapped to LB. Pengy boi makes a great addition to whatever team they play for.
Griffin Porter, Linebacker, Austin Copperheads
User: AsylumParty | DSFL Draft Position: 4 | ISFL Draft Position: 16 | TPE: 780 (18)
Another Coppersnek, and at first glance, it seems like we have the first reach of the DSFL draft on our hands, but AsylumParty did very well for his 4th overall pick in the DSFL for the Luchadores, and 16th overall in the ISFL is shockingly accurate compared to the rate he earns TPE. Griffin Porter happened to lead the league in sacks this season, as well as catching 3 interceptions and recording 18 pass deflections, which gives him a great chance to win an award of some sort.
CJ Riley, Safety, Baltimore Hawks
User: Huskies311 | DSFL Draft Position: 5 | ISFL Draft Position: 17 | TPE: 607 (26)
Well thanks to a name change to IHeart Syracuse, I was very confused since there was no trace of CJ Riley in the TPE Tracker. CJ Riley was a defensive end at the time of the DSFL draft, and that's clearly not the case anymore. Huskies also used to be one of the GMs for Baltimore, and was lowkey a reach based on solely TPE earnings, even though he had to be drafted in the second round because of that GM status.
Water Chestnut III, Defensive End, San Jose Sabercats
User: ckroyal92 | DSFL Draft Position: 6 | ISFL Draft Position: 18 | TPE: Retired
Judging that this once 6th overall pick is now retired, I'd say Water Chestnut III was the biggest bust of the season 23 draft class. Chestnut earned very well for the Minnesota Grey Ducks in the DSFL, but after a few seasons retired because of expansion. ckroyal22 is (or at least was) the GM of the Sabercats, which is why he was picked in the second round of the ISFL draft, and may explain why he retired. My theory is that he didn't protect himself and then got picked by an expansion team, so retired and created a new player, the tight end Jaja Ding Dong.
Reginald Covington III, Quarterback, Arizona Outlaws
User: PDXBaller | DSFL Draft Position: 7 | ISFL Draft Position: 35 | TPE: Retired
Back to back first round busts? Sounds like the DSFL to me. Reginald Covington III is probably the most iconic bust of this season. Drafted in the first round as a quarterback, the first offensive player off the board. He became inactive soon after and his corpse stayed with the Kansas City Coyotes for some time afterwards. The Outlaws made a bad pick here as well, they had no business shooting for him in the third round.
Tyrone Woods, Linebacker, Honolulu Hahalua
User: Rindiee | DSFL Draft Position: 8 | ISFL Draft Position: 39 | TPE: Retired
A threepeat of busts? Figures. This was Rindiee's third player in the league, and as time went on the players got less and less... good. Originally from season 3, this guy had been in the league for a while. He seems to be a pretty big sim league guy, he has affiliate posts forboth the PBE and the SHL. He also had posts for a few PS4 leagues as well. It's a shame for the Hahalua he didn't stick around here, but he did hit the DSFL cap for Myrtle Beach.
First round bust counter: 3
Bob Bob, Safety, Orange County Otters
User: nickyvmlp | DSFL Draft Position: 9 | ISFL Draft Position: 11 | TPE: 739 (19)
Bob Bob was the first pick in the second round by the London Royals, and a first rounder in the ISFL draft because there are more teams in that league. While still a great earner for the S23 class, Bob Bob is winding up to be a bit low compared to his draft position. nickyvmlp is a great guy and I'm sure he's all over the place in the Orange County locker room.
Hingle McCringleberry, Linebacker, Berlin Fire Salamanders
User: Jmac NCheese | DSFL Draft Position: 10 | ISFL Draft Position: 13 | TPE: 533 (28)
Hingle McCringleberry looked like he was gonna be a future star in the league, and Dallas was lucky to get him in the second round. By the time the ISFL draft rolled around, he was still one of the top players, taken by the Chicago Butchers with their first pick of the draft. When expansion rolled around he was unprotected and taken by the Salamanders before becoming inactive shortly after.
Joe Exotic, Defensive Tackle, Yellowknife Wraiths
User: Gamaliel | DSFL Draft Position: 11 | ISFL Draft Position: 58 | TPE: Retired
I guess I wasn't even the first Joe off the board in the DSFL :0. Joe Exotic was possibly the biggest bust of the draft class, falling 47 positions between the DSFL draft season 22 and the ISFL draft one season later. Just imagine how good the Ducks could've been if they had taken the other Joe in the draft.
Bane Kaʻanāʻanā, Defensive Tackle, Honolulu Hahalua
User: ADwyer87 | DSFL Draft Position: 12 | ISFL Draft Position: 21 | TPE: 483 (32)
This player, who's name is just too annoying for me to spell again, might've been drafted a little later than where he actually was in the ISFL if ADwyer hadn't been the GM for Honolulu at the time. Dwyer at one point was a very active user, and was even the commissioner of the league way back in the day. He's let his most recent player fall off a bit, but I'll let it go because dwyer cute bb.
Heinrich Kackpoo, Linebacker, Honolulu Hahalua
User: gbfn | DSFL Draft Position: 13 | ISFL Draft Position: 3 | TPE: 978 (2)
Kackpoo was a big steal for the Portland Pythons at 13th overall, they got a great max earning LB in the second round when most teams didn't even come close to this in the first round. Kackpoo moved up 10 positions to be the third pick of the ISFL draft, and has played with the Hahas since being called up. TO be honest, I couldn't tell you much about gbfn despite sharing a DSFL team with him for at least a season, but anyone who earns that much earns my respect as well.
DB Jadakiss, Safety, Arizona Outlaws
User: Hotdog | DSFL Draft Position: 14 | ISFL Draft Position: 4 | TPE: 856 (14)
Another accurate draft position in the DSFL, good job Norfolk I guess. I believe Hotdog ended up being one of the co-gms of Arizona for a season, which is something that's always good for a first round pick. Jadakiss had 8 sacks this past season, as well as 2 interceptions on the way to finishing 9-7, the same record as the ASFC's one seed, but 5th in the conference thanks to tiebreakers.
Son Goku, Defensive End, Sarasota Sailfish
User: Naosu | DSFL Draft Position: 15 | ISFL Draft Position: 7 | TPE: 917 (9)
This is the first time this article has mentioned the Sailfish, and it's a great player. Son Goku is another player who fell maybe a little bit further than they should have in the DSFL draft, and honestly I don't see why. Son Goku is a top 10 earner in the class, a position that many teams need in the DSFL, and Naosu is a great user. He was also the first overall pick in the most recent uno league draft.
L'Carpetron Dookmarriot, Safety, Philadelphia Liberty
User: notoriustig | DSFL Draft Position: 16 | ISFL Draft Position: 10 | TPE: 395 (43)
And this is the first time Philly shows up, and it's not a great player. L'Carpetron Dookmarriot seemed promising at first, but faded away later on. The Wraiths were actually the ones that picked him at 10, and that is turning out to not be the best decision. Can't really fault them though, I remember at those times he seemed like another really promising player but he just disappeared at one point, and now his player is on the Liberty.
Second round bust counter: 4
Total busts: 7
Eric Richards, Linebacker, Chicago Butchers
User: WildfireMicro | DSFL Draft Position: 17 | ISFL Draft Position: 43 | TPE: Retired
Yet another retired player taken before me. On the bright side, there is hope because user WildfireMicro has a new player, who is actually in this season's ISFL draft class. For that reason, I'm not really sure what I can say other than that he's a great guy and hopefully his newest player does better this time around. This is also the first time the Butchers show up on this list, two first-time teams in a row, and also two busts. RIP Chicago, at least they're good now kinda.
Tomage McGullager, Cornerback, Austin Copperheads
User: Philliesphan96 | DSFL Draft Position: 18 | Draft Position: 37 | TPE: 445 (37)
At first glance, this player's name seemed familiar, but that happens pretty often. I know player names better than user names most of the time. But I definitely know Philliesphan. First of all, excellent choice in team, second of all, great guy. I see him a lot, and even play werewolf with him in the werewolf server. He isn't the best earner, but the Copperheads got a steal with him at 37th overall, because unlike others he does still actually earn.
Ray-Ray Jackson, Cornerback, Honolulu Hahalua
User: Jason | DSFL Draft Position: 19 | ISFL Draft Position: 9 | TPE: 657 (23)
I'm gonna be completely honest here, I have no idea who Jason is. Never heard of him. Well, I probably have heard of him, I just forgot. But apparently he was 9th overall in my draft class. This was the Haha's second pick of the first round, and it was a little bit of a reach. No offense meant to Jason of course, but looking back on it there were definitely some better options still on the board.
Tycker Om, Defensive End, Philadelphia Liberty
User: Mysa | DSFL Draft Position: 20 | ISFL Draft Position: 5 | TPE: 397 (42)
Now this is a player name I recognize. I remember mocking Tycker Om to Philly, one of the few picks I actually got right. They really impressed after the DSFL draft, and there was probably more than one team that was eyeing him up. Unfortunately for the Liberty, he ended up being a bust. That's 2/2 for them, in case anyone's counting. He never actually retired though, and is currently an inactive body on the Colorado Yeti roster.
Kayleb Dotson, Safety, Chicago Butchers
User: K Dot | DSFL Draft Position: 21 | ISFL Draft: 73 | TPE: Retired
Ok now looking back is lowkey sad though. Me and Dotson shared a team on the Portland Pythons and I remember talking with him on occasion. At one point before the ISFL draft he went inactive, and fell all the way to the 7th round before being scooped up by the Butchers. That choice didn't really help them, but there aren't really any right choices that late in the smaller draft classes. That's 4/5 players in round three that are busts buy the way.
Tychondrius Hood, Wide Receiver, San Jose Sabercats
User: Tylus | DSFL Draft Position: 22 | ISFL Draft Position: 6 | TPE: 958 (5)
Finally, some good fucking drafting. Please tell me you get that reference if you're actually reading this. Ty is an absolute steal. I honestly have no idea how he fell this far in the DSFL. I made friends with him right away when we were rookies, and we were both part of #lamargang (RIP). I believe he's lined up to be the Sabercats number one receiver this season, and he was the first offensive player I took in my redraft project.
Carlos Wheezer, Defensive Lineman, Orange County Otters
User: LGMForever | DSFL Draft Position: 23 | ISFL Draft Position: 23 | TPE: 498 (31)
First of all, what a great name. Second of all, why did you get drafted 23rd overall in both the DSFL and ISFL drafts? That's so boring smh. I'm not really sure who you are, and I blame the Orange County closed locker room on that, but I'm sure you're a pretty cool guy. He hasn't updated since early November, but he was last seen on the forums only a few days ago, so maybe there's a comeback in store.
Nicholas Ayers, Running Back, Honolulu Hahalua
User: Faded | DSFL Draft Position: 24 | ISFL Draft Position: 27 | TPE: 733 (20)
Another good pick, maybe this round isn't so bad after all. Faded is the cutest porpsect in the entire class, and an absolute steal for Honolulu at 27th overall. He's so great I really don't have that much to say about him. He's (possibly) soon to be head office, whether that's a positive or a negative for you. Also I just realized how hard it is to type Honolulu Hahalua, whoever named it that is a booli.
Busts this round: 4
Total busts: 11
Mikel Van Perkins, Cornerback, Sarasota Sailfish
User: Pavel Pipowitsch | DSFL Draft Position: 25 | ISFL Draft Position: 31 | TPE: 318 (45)
I have no idea who this is, but they are definitely a bust. I have no idea how this guy got taken a full 12 picks in front of me. I guess he was active at the time of the draft, which makes sense, and then fell off afterwards. Although I guess that's the definition of a bust. Mikel Van Perkins is currently halfway between being an actual player and retiring, as he is still actually in the tracker, in the bottom 5 in TPE in his class, but he's not actually on a team.
Raphael D'Alcott, Safety, Sarasota Sailfish
User: KenitohMenara | DSFL Draft Position: 26 | ISFL Draft Position: 8 | TPE: 379 (44)
This guy used to be a big deal back when he was a rookie, but he has clearly fallen off (just a little bit) since then. Clearly there was something there, since the Sailfish felt the need to take him in the first round, but Raphael D'Alcott is now the highest TPE free agent in the season 23 draft class. That's 2 current free agent busts in a row for Sarasota, and I'm gonna say that it's because Frost sux lmap.
Braxton Sinclair, Defensive Tackle, Yellowknife Wraiths
User: Lost_Kelu | DSFL Draft Position: 27 | ISFL Draft Position: 46 | TPE: Retired
This is a name that I do actually recognize, but I have no idea who this user is. If only they had stuck around.... This guy was never really a stellar earner and yet the Norfolk Seawolves picked him before me. I'm not salty though. I'm glad that I was drafted to the Pythons. They helped get me where I am today. Of course I always hope this guy comes back, I do with everyone, but especially this guy because I just want to see what the next name he can think of is.
Kevin Malone, Offensive Lineman, Tijuana Luchadores
User: TubbyTim69 | DSFL Draft Position: 28 | ISFL Draft Position: N/A | TPE: Retired
Tim, why did I not realize you made a player in my draft class? Maybe because it was a complete bust. No offense. The Luchadores drafted Kevin Malone (great name btw) hoping to get a few seasons with a good offensive lineman before eventually sending him up to play in the then NSFL. But before his first season ever ended, Kevin Malone announced he would retire at the end of the season. Tubby Tim's new player, Makoto Otawara is currently still going strong though.
Omar Wright Jr., Linebacker, Colorado Yeti
User: dave | DSFL Draft Position: 29 | ISFL Draft Position: 60 | TPE: Retired
I can see why this guy went ahead of me in the DSFL. I get that I was a little bit of a later create. And dave's first player was in the league for it's very first season. But at some point between the DSFL draft and the ISFL draft, he went inactive like so many others, and fell all the way to 60 to the Colorado Yeti, a few rounds later than I was drafted. As a user since the prehistoric ages of the league, I wish he was still here, among the league veterans to tell all us young 'ns how it was back in the good old days when we actually had to earn TPE the hard way.
Dre Matthews, Wide Receiver, Philadelphia Liberty
User: Confictional | DSFL Draft Position: 30 | ISFL Draft Position: 29 | TPE: 588 (27)
Finally, someone in this round who isn't already retired. And a good one at that. I might be using my steal card too easily, but after 3 straight retired players this is a sight for sore eyes. Finally the Liberty show up for an actual good pick, except he actually got stolen away to the Berlin Fire Salamanders, the better expansion team, with the expansion draft back in (insert season here). Confictional is a great guy, but he hasn't been seen on the forums since early December (please come back bb).
Mordecai Morrisey, Defensive End, Austin Copperheads
User: MCP_ | DSFL Draft Position: 31 | ISFL Draft Position: 57 | TPE: Retired
AAAAAAANNNND straight back to the retirees, no regrets. If you're actually reading this, I'm starting to question your sanity, and you should also start to question your sanity. But don't worry, I'm also questioning my sanity. The currently retired Mordecai Morrisey only ever played for the Kansas City Coyotes, because, like so many others, he went inactive and retired before he had enough TPE to make it big time. RIP.
Eugene Smoothie, Safety, Philadelphia Liberty
User: Nhamlet | DSFL Draft Position: 32 | ISFL Draft Position: 14 | TPE: 916 (10)
Now, you might recognize this name. Eugene Smoothie currently plays for the Coloradi Yeti, not the Liberty. Regardless, what an absolute steal in this draft, maybe even a bigger steal than me. The Myrtle Beach Buccaneers used their 4th pick of the draft on him, and he was their best pick (sorry Faded). Smoothie is top ten in the class in TPE, and he's just one TPE behind Son Goku for 9th. What an absolute steal by MBB. Change your name back though.
Busts this round: 6
Total busts: 17
Mr. Large Sternum, Defensive End, Orange County Otters
User: ml002 | DSFL Draft Position: 33 | ISF Draft Position: 69 | TPE: 211 (47)
Finally, we get to pick 69 of the ISFL draft. Mr. Large Sternum was an unforgettable name from the season 23 draft class, until he was actually forgotten eventually, after going inactive before reaching the DSFL TPE cap and the ISFL draft. I can't think of a better named player to be taken 69th overall though. You might think 47th best TPE in the class isn't too too bad for someone taken so late in a this draft, but he's third to last in players that haven't retired.
Jason Young, Cornerback, Honolulu Hahalua
User: A Duck On Quack | DSFL Draft Position: 34 | ISFL Draft Position: 65 | TPE: Retired
Well one positive about this player is that he actually made a wiki page. At least he seems more promising at this point compared to the last player, even though Jason Young retired at one point since the drafts. A Duck On Quack never sent a single message on the forums after the DSFL draft, which is probably why he slightly fell in the ISFL draft. Too bad the Kansas City Coyotes took this guy instead of one of the next three stud picks:
Kai Sakura, Wide Receiver, Yellowknife Wraiths
User: DarknessRising | DSFL Draft Position: 35 | ISFL Draft Position: 22 | TPE: 962 (4)
Somehow, after four full rounds and another few picks, a stud like Kai Sakura is still left, served up on a silver platter for the Minnesota Grey Ducks to feast on. Kai Sakura is an absolute beast on the field, and max earning, 4th in the whole of the season 23 draft class in terms of TPE. This guy was an absolute steal. DarknessRising, the user behind such an elite player is also a great dude with a lot of passion for the league, and the first of three consecutive steals in the draft.
Jackson Kingston, Wide Receiver, Coloradi Yeti
User: Daybe | DSFL Draft Position: 36 | ISFL Draft Position: 26 | TPE: 939 (8)
The second straight wide receiver picked this round, and the second straight steal. Is it just because they were on offense? That's probably part of the reason. I honestly didn't know the user behind Jackson Kingston until recently, and even then I didn't know Daybe isn't a recreate player. I feel like I see Daybe everywhere in the league. Well, almost everywhere. Not the New York locker room, because that's not open.
Joseph Petrongolo, Running Back, Arizona Outlaws
User; Jo3fish5 | DSFL Draft Position: 37 | ISFL Draft Position: 19 | TPE: 846 (15)
And now, the pick you've all been waiting for, the one, the only, Joseph Petrongolo, aka me. Looking at it now, I'm not nearly as big of a steal as I thought I was, especially compared to the two amazing players before me. But still a steal nonetheless. I'm the 15th best earner in the class, drafted more than double that. I was an absolute banger when I position switched from tight end to running back for Portland, and I helped out behind Jay Cue in Arizona, even though they didn't protect me with expansion. I'm not salty.
Judas The White, Defensive Tackle, New Orleans Second Line
User: Judas_Iscariot | DSFL Draft Position: 38 | ISFL Draft Position: 56 | TPE: Retired
And with that, the steal train has officially left the station. After three great players, Judas The White Appears. I do kind of remember this name from back in the day, if only very faintly. Also this is somehow only the second time I've put the New Orleans Second Line in this article, which makes me wonder what picks they took early, and what position they were drafted in the DSFL.
Byron Blackwell, Cornerback, Arizona Outlaws
User: thecanadiancanuck | DSFL Draft Position: 39 | ISFL Draft Position: 64 | TPE: Retired
The second Arizona player out of the past three, except this one isn't nearly as good as the first one, mostly because Byron Blackwell doesn't actually play in the league anymore. I feel like I still see this user on the various discord servers though, so maybe he's still here, or maybe I'm just delusional. Guessing from the username, this guy heard about the league from being in the SHL, Simulation Hockey League, but after a bit of time here decided he was better suited on the ice.
Busts before Joefish: 2
Total busts before Joefish: 19
Now of course there are plenty of later round steals that came out of this draft, but this article is already long enough and I want to be done with it so I'll just list them here.
Luca Scabbia
Videl-San
Julio Jones
Danny (the GOAT) King
Yuuto Kira Cloudera
Doug Howlett
Brock Bodenhammer
These steals were all picked incredibly late for where their players are now. Brock Bodenhammer was the last pick in the 8th round, and made a comeback up almost 20 draft position come ISFL draft time. This really goes to show how important drafting is, especially in the later rounds after the initial "good players" for teams in the DSFL and the ISFL. In this particular season, the Myrtle Beach Buccaneers 8th round pick actually turned out to be a better choice than the Kansas City Coyotes first rounder, at least from a longevity point of view. Bodenhammer is still around the league today, while Reginald Covington III quickly went inactive before applying 400 TPE.
