“It is 4th down as Joliet sets up in shotgun. Two wide receivers at the bottom of your screen, Salamanca at the top. The Hahalua need to get to the 50 for a first and another 10 yards to be in field goal position. Joliet motions Kai out of the backfield. One last check at the line. Here is the snap! Joliet scrambles out to the left and he has Kai wide open heading for the sidelines. He floats it over a defender, and it sails out of bounds. Turnover on downs and Howitzer marches out to take the final kneel down. The Silverbacks held on to their 14 point lead halfway through the third, but almost gave it up here at the end.”
“Yea, it was not a great showing for Howitzer, but he did enough as a game manager to keep his team in the game and lean on the powerful legs of Rogers. On the other side of the ball, Dogwood Maple and Mendoza both had phenomenal games and terrorized Joliet Christ as he was trying to play hero ball all game. The Silverbacks move above five-hundred as they secure their third win of the season and second in two weeks, and Honolulu fails to be victorious in their fifth straight game.”
“After winning 5 consecutive games at the end of last season to squeeze into the playoffs, Honolulu lost in the first round of the playoffs, and have been in this slump ever since, although these last two games have shown that the team has not given up hope on making a late season playoff run once again.”

Freddy Bly enters the locker room after shaking hands with the other team and talking to the few media members keeping track of the season 29 third round rookie out of Idaho. He sits down at his locker, looks down, clasps his helmet in his hands, and gives a small smirk and chuckle to himself. What have I gotten myself into? Freddy continues to reflect at his locker until Eleven Kendrick-Watts shakes Freddy’s shoulders to console him. Freddy looks up, and starts mingling with the team.

You may be wondering Why should I care about a true-rookie punter’s feelings not even a third of the way through his first season? Well, the story actually starts a couple weeks before the Season 29 ISFL draft.
Freddy received calls from a handful of teams, and everything seemed to go great until the final two questions: Can you play another position? And Will you be ready to play in a few seasons? Both answers were no-brainers for Freddy, but neither answer was what teams were looking for. ISFL teams were content with their kicking situations going into the season, and knowing Freddy’s lineage (minus the fact that he is only related by adoption), teams expected Freddy to make the decision to switch to Cornerback on a whim. After many failed attempts at the conversion in high school, Freddy knew that was non-negotiable as he would never see the field if he pursued a different position. With the second question, Freddy told teams that he expected to be on the ISFL roster his rookie season. He was tired of losing in the DSFL, and knew he could only get better if he made the opening day roster in the ISFL. Teams told Freddy that this would be difficult to accommodate, but Freddy has been in tougher situations before, and would find a way to adapt and overcome.
Fast forward to draft day and Freddy gets stuck in traffic on his way home to watch the draft. He sits in his car as he listens to players going off the board left and right. Freddy knew these players were all deserving of their draft positions, but he was getting anxious to hear his name called. All of a sudden, Freddy gets a call at the beginning of the third round from one of the General Managers of the Honolulu Hahalua. They said they were expecting to take me in the middle of the third round with the stipulation that he would battle for the starting spot with Venus Powers. Seeing where the draft has gone so far and what his other options were, Freddy decided this was fair for him and there was no way he was going to lose another kicking battle.

Training camp rolls around and Venus and Freddy are sharing reps with the first team specialists. Venus continued her strong showing in training camp after her near 90% season last year in field goals. Freddy could not get out of his kicking slump, and failed to impress the coaches. Venus would continue her starting roll as kicker for the Hahalua. What the coaches failed to tell Freddy was that they had already pegged him to be the starting punter for the team this year. Freddy has never shown too much interest in punting, and only took on the punting duties for the Seawolves due to necessity. Despite winning Punter of the Year in the DSFL, Freddy still did not consider that as a fulfilling role on a team, and continues to pursue being a starting kicker in the ISFL.

After week 5, Freddy, looking down, giving himself a slight smirk and chuckle, He realizes that he has found his calling as a punter and has made the decision that he will pursue his punting duties over kicking duties for the remainder of his career. Only time will tell, but Freddy hopes to see his name next to his father’s in the hall of fame one day, and he just found the path he needs to follow.
