Week 8, Season 29
Raeni Clarke wasn't sure what surprised her more: The fact that the Bondi Beach Buccaneers had just defeated her Norfolk Seawolves for the first victory this year or that she was being given credit for motivating the Buccaneers to their landmark triumph.
In the days leading up to the week 8 game, Clarke was quoted as saying that losing to the Buccaneers, who had dropped seven consecutive games this season and eight since the end of last season, "would be "embarrassing."
Inspired by Clarke words, Bondi Beach jumped to a 21-0 lead which was decreased to 21-14 after the Seawolves fought back a bit. Though the Emu War Memorial Stadium was half-empty, loyal fans were loaded up with Fosters and the roar of the crowd was raining down on Clarke and the Seawolves. The cheers could be heard by the sun bathers on the soft sand of the beach just a stones throw away.
After the game, as the Buccaneers celebrated the end of one of the longest losing streaks in DSFL history, they chastised her for her remarks.
"We read the article to where Raeni said it would be disgraceful to lose to [us]," Buccaneers QB Dexter Zayrlen said. "She said it would be an embarrassment to lose, and it was."
Bondi Beach had been making obvious strides on offense, but its defense was simply laughable. The 0-7 Buccaneers had given up 28+ points in five of their seven matchups.
There was no reason to expect a Bondi victory except for the fact that the Buccaneers were overdue and the 2-6 Seawolves were nearly as inept.
"We weren't playing well and they were hungry for a win," Clarke says. "They had almost won a couple other games and they had a good offense that wasn't getting much help from their defense"
Dexter Zaylren started the game off hot tossing two touchdowns to get the Buccaneers started and halfback Tron Carter snuck into the end zone to bring them to a 21-0 lead. Norfolk fought back before the half getting two touchdowns of their own to get within a touchdown before half.
After the half Raeni Clarke came out firing tieing the game up with a goal line pass to Dorfus Jimbo Jr Jr. The game was locked at 21-21. After that each team went back and forth trading touchdowns until the Bucs finally came out in the end with the precious victory 35-28.
"We were strangled by the trauma," said Jared Crowe, the Seawolves' star linebacker. "As soon as they got on top at the end there, you could feel it, the gloom sinking in that we would be the losers to the losers. It was a nightmare. It was the worst experience of my football career."
After the game, several Buccaneers and their coaches took a deep draw on the stogies they had been saving to celebrate the long-awaited first victory, he couldn't help but notice that it had lost some of its freshness.
"I've been carrying them around so long, they're stale," BJ Uber the general manager of the Buccaneers stated.
This was a glorious victory for the Bondi Beach Buccaneers who were hurt deeply by this past years ISFL call-ups and having to field many inexperienced rookies and fill crucial positions with dummy bots.
"This felt good," rookie defensive tackle Dominos Pizzaman stated. "I couldn't sleep last night, and I'm happy that I can finally get this monkey off my back...I'm sure the others feel the same"
Next week the Buccaneers take on the Dallas Birddogs who are the top Dawgs in the DSFL South hoping to continue their success.
