Great things are happening in Baltimore. After a dismal season 1 where Baltimore was the worst team in the league, the Hawks are in the driver's seat in the NSFC, up two games on rivals in Colorado and Yellowknife. While the Hawks have had some incredible veteran contributors, the Hawks had an incredible draft in season two. This article will go pick by pick to discuss the contributions of their Rookies. The Hawks actually did not have a first round pick in this past draft, instead opting to trade down. The quantity of picks certainly seemed to pay off.
Their first pick was rookie Darnell Turner. Turner was an excellent selection at the top of the second round. Turner has three interceptions (tied for sixth in the league) and an astounding eleven passes defended (tied for third overall in the league). Along with veteran Antoine Delacour, Turner has been a revelation in the secondary for the Hawks, leading the team to be tied for second in the league in interceptions.
Picked tenth overall, immediately following Darnell Turner was Brokk Lee. Lee was the first of five lineman drafted by the Hawks, and the first of three that are active workhorses for the team. Lee has been one of the anchors on a line that has been one of the best in the league. Lee has been impressive with his 25 pancakes, but even more impressive has been his only two sacks allowed. Given the fact that Lee is a run blocker primarily, opening up holes for stud Darlane Farlane, it has been surprising how successful he has been blocking for Scrub Kyubee.
The first of two Hawks third round picks has also been an amazing contributor. Owen Taylor has helped to contribute to the most surprising defense of the season. Taylor has contributed three sacks, and four tackles for a loss. While that might not seem like a ton, when starting opposite of star Defensive End Kurt Hendrix, positive contributions like that are huge from Rookies.
With the 20th pick overall the Hawks took their first disappointment. Rookie Jorge Masvidal has barely contributed from the safety position. Masvidal has not shown that he is willing to put the work in, and he has not yet contributed to the team other than making some tackles.
At 26, 27 and 28 is where the Hawks shocked some people. The Hawks took three rookie offensive lineman in the row, and two of them have been awesome so far this season, putting in the work and showing their potential.
Ironically the first one taken, Alonzo Charles, has not been a hard worker at all. However, in spite of his lack of work ethic, Charles has actually been very good for the Hawks. With 30 pancakes (good for eighth in the league) and only 3 sacks allowed Charles has been very in pass blocking.
The next two selections however are the two that have proven to be major steals. There are not that many active offensive lineman, and to have two taken in the fourth round is a coup for the Hawks.
Dieter Koch was taken with the 27th overall selection and he has been awesome. Third in the league with 36 pancakes Koch has also allowed only three sacks. While not quite a run blocker, he has still helped to contribute to the success of the Hawks.
Next taken at 28th overall was Avon Blocksdale. Blocksdale has flown under the radar this season due to his minimal amount of pancakes (15), however he has been one of the best linemen in the league. Due to strong work ethic, Blocksdale is now the second best run blocker on the team, and the best pass blocker. Blocksdale is one of only 6 offensive lineman to play every game this season and allow only one sack. Rumor has it that Blocksdale is now moving to Right Tackle from the inside, so we will see how that will effect his pancake and sack numbers.
The Hawks next pick is one that it seems every team regrets passing on. Stud RB Darlane Farlane somehow fell to the fifth round despite his impressive speed. And Farlane has proved the doubters wrong. Farlane leads the NSFL in rushing with 71 more yards than his closest competitor. He's also tied for fourth in the league in TDs. Farlane has been massively impressive and valuable to this team.
But the Hawks did not stop there. They found another solid contributor in the sixth round drafting James Wright for linebacker. Wright has had 40 tackles, including two for a loss, to go with 5 sacks (tied for 7th amont LBs).
The Hawks next three picks were pass catchers, two wideouts and a tight end. First up was Matthew Vincent. Vincent has been quite solid, if unspectacular for the Hawks. He's racked up 429 yards on 35 receptions and has reeled in a TD. He's been a solid number two wideout for the team.
Tight End Carmel Gibson has been a complete enigma. Despite a lackluster work ethic, Gibson has been the best receiving tight end this year. Gibson leads tight ends in the touchdowns, and is second in yardage. Gibson has not made a single update, yet it hasn't shown up in the stats.
The last relevant contributor to the Hawks from the draft has been wideout John Baker. Baker has had 153 yards on 18 receptions and one touchdown. Not bad numbers for the number three wideout on the team.
One last final shoutout to season three rookie JD Boom. Boom was a waiver wire pickup and has had three sacks for the Hawks, making a surprising contribution. He's been very solid on this amazing defensive line.
So there you have it, the Hawks sitting at 6-2 have had some incredible contributors to the team from the draft, and it is their secret to success. Lets see if the Hawks can keep it up. They have a tough road ahead, but the future looks bright in Baltimore. As always, please leave and comments or concerns.
