Cedric Wilkins II, who has quickly become the center of attention for many sports journalists, continues to baffle both his followers and his franchise with his behavior, as today he failed to report to Taco Bell Stadium for a week one contest with the Yellowknife Wraiths until just twenty minutes prior to the opening kick. Perhaps even more surprisingly, barely enough time to dress appears to have been plenty of time to perform for young Wilkins, who followed what was a relatively lackluster preseason with a solid debut performance, recording a sack of former teammate Dustin Parmalee, as well as deflecting a pass and allowing just two catches while being targeted six times.
Reporters, briefly speaking with the rookie nickelback postgame, note that he once again seemed eager to escape the venue. “I told y’all I was ready for this, and I proved that tonight,” Wilkins stated, adamantly maintaining his position from the preseason, “I’ve had some shit to deal with, but if you think I ain’t committed to this game, if you think I ain’t going to give this my all, I ain’t got time for you. I just wish people here would give me some credit, let me do what I got to do”.
It is not entirely clear why Wilkins arrived late to yesterday’s game, nor is it readily apparent why he was found hurrying to leave the stadium postgame. Some reporters speculate, contradictory to common belief, that Wilkins did not arrive from Baton Rouge the day prior, but instead had made his way to Canada at some point; his flight into Philadelphia, they note, appears to have arrived from Toronto Pearson International Airport, an unusual pit stop for a layover from Baton Rouge, but perhaps more reasonable if his point of origin had been, for instance, Yellowknife. Others suggest he was spotted boarding an Amtrak train bound for the New York area late last night, although it is not clear that New York would have been his intended destination even were that true.
Despite his production yesterday, many teammates have continued to express concern about Wilkins, fearing that he lacks commitment to the game. Reporters have not to date established any reason why the rookie has so often been absent from team activities, as neither teammates nor the front office have been made aware of any conflicting commitments. This situation reeks mightily of one thing: Wilkins, for whatever reason, seems unhappy to be a member of the Philadelphia Liberty organization, and for the team that spent a first round pick to acquire him, that does not bode well.
