We sat down with Tight End Charlie law today once we heard some buzz that the BSU product would not be at the Draft Wednesday night. As seems to be his M.O., he was very forthcoming about it.
"My niece's birthday is Wednesday so that's where I'll be. She's gonna be 7 and she and my sister and brother in law were originally gonna come out to the draft but couldn't, so I'm going home to Vegas for them."
We discussed the possibility of this hurting his draft stock with teams around the league and his communication with them on the issue.
"It kinda just came up. Plans fell through and I changed mine only this morning. I haven't really had a chance to get ahold of any of the GMs and they're all really frickin' busy right now anyway. This interview will probably work fine. If it hurts me, it hurts me. There's fifty plus dudes getting drafted but I only have one niece, and Angela wins every time. That's just science.
Some may recall that after BSU won it's bowl game this past season, Law was seen holding a small child on his shoulders on the field, which was the niece in question. There was also a story about her criticizing coaches on social media. The reminder made Law laugh.
"So obviously she's not old enough for Twitter. But my sister would put up real time videos of her calling the plays the team was running right before snap with pretty damn high accuracy and some others where she was going off about formations and disguising intentions better. She's smarter than hell. I got asked to tell her to stop doing that and I offered to transfer to another school. They didn't ask again.
We turned our attention to the goings on of draft week and asked how much he'd been paying attention to the media and had any thoughts on his coverage.
"Somewhat. I saw a few things myself but mostly people on social media and friends and relatives were giving me updates or sending me clips of stuff. Anyone who says they don't hear any of it is lying their asses off. And I know what you're getting at about how much I've been talked about. Which is to say not much. Yeah, I saw that I was left off that list of rising prospects and that I'm not mentioned in anyone's mock drafts and all that. It is what it is. It doesn't bother me. Guys like Boggs and that one kicker? Those guys are great for ratings. Big names form big programs with big mouths. And that's not a knock. I have a big mouth. Literally. Didn't even need to remove my wisdom teeth when they came in. I have 36 teeth. Look. I said before I'm not worried about my lack of coverage or attention. I've met with team scouts and GMs aplenty and I know where they stand. They know where I stand. So it's all good. I'm just gonna see where I go, from my spot on the couch next to my Angie, and we're gonna celebrate and then we're gonna go from there. I'm gonna make one of these teams look really really smart for picking me. When I'm hoisting trophies and people are talking about how so and so was the big name back during the draft, I'm not gonna care then either."
We asked him the obvious, all important question. Are you the best Tight End in this draft?
"I'm the one that's gonna win the most championships. I'll let someone else figure out how great I am later. But I'll say this. You better work like you're the best or trying to be. If you don't get up every day and try to close the gap between you and the guy you might think is better, then you've wasted that day. I'm not gonna be one of those party animal tight ends who barely puts the work in and lazies it up through natural talent before getting hurt halfway through every season. My ass is gonna be in team meetings. With the offense, the o-line, the QBs, the receivers, the backs, all of it. And every time I blow by one of my teammates in practice I'm gonna let him know exactly how I did it. Iron sharpens iron. If I see a play opportunity, I'm gonna let whoever the appropriate person is know about it. if I see room for improvement I'm gonna say that too. if the next guy behind me on the depth chart has something fixable, I'm gonna help him with it, too. I'd rather catch zero touchdowns my whole career and a have a hand full of rings than get one or two rings and catch the most tds ever. Period. On the field, the tam that gets me is gonna be my family and well..I think it's obvious how important my family is to me. Also, they better be ready to make up some gear for my niece."
