Defensive Line Standouts - Week 6
Welcome to week 6 of our Season 3 Defensive Line Standouts! After a Tuck free week, we’re back to more of the usual this week. The Big 3 DTs (Bjornsson, Miller, and Sandoval) have all appeared 5 consecutive times and are going for number 6 this week. The current record sits at 8 by Justin Tuck in Season 2. Appearances of note, we have 4 rookies on our list this week and one player making their first appearance. Will the Big 3 ever let anyone else in on the fun? Can Tuck break the sack record by week 10? How long can stretch this article out? Only time will tell! Enough chit chat… Let’s begin!
Defensive End Top Performers
J. Tuck
($ x5) 8 TCK, 1 TFL, 5 SCK
Just give the man his MVP award already. Yet another monster game from Tuck as he makes his fifth appearance on our list. His 8 tackles, 1 tackles for loss, and 5 sacks was more than enough to, once again, earn the top spot on our list. With his 5 sacks this week, Tuck wrestled away the sack crown from Bjornsson and is now on pace to finish the season with 37 sacks, 11 more than the current season record. He’ll be headed out to Colorado next week to face a struggling Yeti squad that has allowed the third most sacks in the NSFL.
A. de Ligt
($$) 5 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
Our first rookie to make the list this week, de Ligt is making his second appearance overall. His 5 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 sack were a big help in the SaberCats valiant effort to give the Hawks their first loss but, in the end, it wasn’t quite enough. Although he only has 2 sacks on the season, he does have 6 tackles for loss, an impressive number through only 6 games. The SaberCats are headed out to California next week for a tough conference game against the Orange County Otters.
J. Boom
($$$) 5 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
Speak of the Otters, JD Boom is the first Otter, and 1 of 2, to show on our list this week. Boom posted the exact same stat line as his fellow rookie listed above him, and finished with 5 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 sack. Boom currently sits at a very respectable 3 tackles for loss and 5 sacks, on the season. He’ll be hosting fellow rookie de Ligt next week as the San Jose SaberCats make the short trip to Orange County.
Other Great Performers
A. Tomlinson
($$$$) 6 TCK, 2 TFL
B. Crocker
($) 3 TCK, 1 SCK
D. Davidson
($$) 3 TCK, 2 TFL
Crocker is the lone man making his first appearance here with a 3 tackle and 1 sack performance. He is the lone Yeti on our list this week. Davidson showed once again that he is a force in the run game, finishing with 3 tackles and 2 tackles for loss. There is, perhaps, no great defensive end (when it comes to run support) that Tomlinson, however. He is currently tied for the league leader in tackles for loss with 10. He is making his fourth appearance on our list.
Defensive Tackle Top Performers
D. Miller
($ x6) 7 TCK, 2 SCK, 1 forced fumble
Dan Miller finished week 6 with 7 tackles, 2 sacks, and a forced fumble. I’m not sure how he does it, but with this forced fumble, he has now tied the league record for forced fumbles in a season. In only 6 weeks. As if that wasn’t enough, Miller is also currently sitting in third place for sacks in the NSFL, with 11. Whatever he’s getting paid, he deserves more, as he is the hear and soul of this SaberCats defense. Miller is headed out to Cali next week for a very tough road test against the Orange County Otters.
K. Hendrix
($$) 4 TCK, 2 TFL, 2 SCK
After a bit of a hiatus, Hendrix finally returns to our list for his second appearance. Hendrix is still just as dangerous as last year, as referenced by his 4 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and 2 sack performance, but, thanks to the rest of his defensive line picking up the slack, he hasn’t been asked to do nearly as much this year. The move to defensive tackle should really showcase his abilities against what is, generally speaking, a slightly weaker part of the offensive line. Next week, Baltimore heads to Yellowknife for a tough conference rivalry game.
G. King
($$) 5 TCK, 2 SCK
King finished this week with 5 tackles and 2 sacks, and is surprisingly, only making his second appearance on our list. When half of the defensive tackle list is filled by the same 3 guys every week, someone is bound to be left off and, unfortunately, he last been the last man left off 3 different weeks. At 8 sacks in just 6 weeks, King has shown that he was worth every penny when selected second overall by the Outlaws. He’s set to have another big game next week as the Outlaws head to mountains to face a struggling Colorado Yeti team.
Other Great Performers
B. Bjornsson
($ x6) 6 TCK, 1 SCK
R. Sandoval
($ x6) 8 TCK
M. Ramrio
($$$$) 3 TCK, 1 SCK
If you followed this list at all last year or earlier in the season, these should be three very familiar names to you. Bjornsson finished with 6 tackles and sack, earning his sixth appearance this year after earning 8 last year. Sandoval, the lone remaining rookie, was a run stuffing machine and finished the week with 8 tackles, enough to earn his sixth appearance as well. Ramrio rounds out the list with a 3 tackles and 1 sack performance to earn him his 4 spot on our list and finishing the year with 12 last year.
Team Appearances After Week 6*
Baltimore: 14
San Jose: 12
Orange County: 9
Yellowknife: 8
Arizona: 8
Las Vegas: 8
Philadelphia: 7
Colorado: 6
Baltimore and San Jose hold firm at #1 and #2, while Vegas drops from #3 to #6, and Orange County climbs from #5 to #3. After a big week last week with 3 appearances, Las Vegas is the only franchise to not have a player make our list this week. Miller, Sandoval, and Bjornsson all continued their streaks of appearing on our list to make it an impressive 6 out of 6 weeks. Interesting to note, Bjornsson accounts for 75% of his teams’ appearances, the most of any player. As always, if you have any comments, corrections, or question, I’d love to hear them below.
*Just a reminder, this ranking is not necessarily indicative of how well a team’s defense is operating as a whole. For example, Arizona leads the league in sacks by a wide margin but, is currently tied for fourth in number of individual appearances here.
