Defensive Line Standouts – Week 13
Welcome to week 13 of our Season 4 Defensive Line Standouts. With only two weeks left in the season, the playoff hunt is really starting to heat up. Only one of the playoff spots has been spoken for and it’s going to get crazy. This is the time of year when you hope your studs show up, and as you can see by the number of appearances from the players below, that’s definitely the case. Enough chit chat… Let’s begin!
Defensive End Top Performers
C. Okonkwo
($$$$) 6 TCK, 4 TFL, 1 SCK
Finishing with the highest point total of any defensive lineman this week, Okonkwo’s 6 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, and 1 sacks are an impressive feat, and his best performance of the season. Believe it or not, with his fourth appearance this week, Okonkwo is actually the least successful of the SaberCats starting defensive line. That’s not a knock on Okonkwo so much as it’s a testament to how successful their defensive line has been this season. The SaberCats will be headed to Orange County next week as they’ll be playing for pride only, as the Otters have all but locked up the final playoff spot in the ASFC.
J. Cox
($$$$) 4 TCK, 1 TFL, 2 SCK
Making his fourth appearance on the season with 4 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 2 sacks, Cox is one of only two players this week to record more than one sack (the other being Dan Miller.) With those two sacks, he sits at a total of 6 on the season, the second most of any player of the Legion (V. Cox leads the team with 10.) J. Cox also ranks second on the Legion in tackles for loss with 9 (behind only Big Bot), has shown to be a flexible contributor to the Legion defense. In the cruelest way to finish a season, the Legion with be headed to the desert to face the Arizona Outlaws for week 14.
R. Maddox
($ x5) 3 TCK, 2 TFL, 1 SCK
Finishing with 3 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and 1 sack, Maddox’s great performance marks the fifth time he has appeared on our list this season, the second most of any Wraith. I’m not sure what they started putting in the water way up north, but the Wraiths defensive line has come on strong the last half of the season. If not for the abysmal first half, they would easily be in the top three for number of appearances. The Wraiths he Colorado next week to face a 1-12 Yeti team, where a victory would clinch home field advantage for the NSFC Championship game.
Other Great Performers
B. Bot
($ x6) 4 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
K. Hendrix
($ x9) 3 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
G. Wright Jr.
($ x7) 5 TCK, 1 SCK
Making his sixth appearance, Big Bot leads the Legion in tackles for loss. Hendrix makes his ninth appearance of the season and is currently tied for the second most appearances in the NSFL. Wright Jr. is another Orange County position change success story, and has seven showing on our list this season.
Defensive Tackle Top Performers
E. Kamaka
($ x7) 11 TCK, 1 SCK
With his 11 tackles and 1 sack, Kamaka earned his seventh spot on our list, and had the second highest point total of any player this week. He’s been a beast this year, accounting for almost half of the Liberty’s appearances on our list. Kamaka recently announced that he would not be accepting his player option for next year, and is clearly looking to get paid. Whether it’s the Liberty or somewhere else, great defensive tackles are few and far between. He deserves every penny he asks for. He’ll head out to Baltimore next week for their most important game of the season. The winner will head off to Yellowknife for the NSFC Championship, while the loser stays at home.
A. Tomlinson
($ x5) 7 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
Making his fifth appearance on our list this week, Tomlinson did so with an impressive 7 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 sack performance. A run-stuffing specialist, Tomlinson is the current record holder for most tackles for loss in a season with 22. He continued to show his prowess in that aspect, but also added a sack to bring his total to 6 on the year. Tomlinson will head out to San Jose with his fellow Otters to face a San Jose team that is almost guaranteed to be left out of the playoffs; I guarantee they won’t be playing that way though.
D. Miller
($ x11) 3 TCK, 2 SCK
Finishing the week with 3 tackles and 2 sacks, Miller clinched his league leading eleventh spot on our list for the season. Miller has a two-spot lead over his closest competitors, Asipi from Arizona and Hendrix from Baltimore, meaning that no matter how his game next week goes, he is guaranteed to finish the season with the most appearances, marking the second time he has done so. Speaking of twos, Miller’s 2 sacks make him one of only two defensive linemen to record more than one sack this week. So many twos! San Jose will be hosting the Orange County Otters next week in a game that, despite having eight wins already, doesn’t look like it will change who’s in and who’s out for the playoffs.
Other Great Performers
A. Asipi
($ x9) 2 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
V. Cox
($ x6) 4 TCK, 1 SCK
B. Bjornsson
($ x6) 4 TCK, 1 SCK
Currently tied for second most appearances, Asipi sits at 9 on the year. His 4 tackles and 1 sack are enough for Cox to claim his sixth spot, tied for the most of any Legion player. Bjornsson continues his hot second half, and makes it his fifth week in a row on our list.
Team Appearances After Week 13*
Baltimore: 28 (+1)
Arizona: 27 (+1)
San Jose: 22 (+2)
Orange County: 22 (+2)
Philadelphia: 15 (+1)
Yellowknife: 16 (+2)
Las Vegas: 17 (+3)
Colorado: 12 (+)
After a week with very little movement, the bottom half of our standings, once again, see a giant shake-up. Colorado stays mired in the basement with no players on our list this week, the only team to do so. Philadelphia take a nosedive from fifth to seventh, while Las Vegas and Yellowknife move up to fifth and sixth, respectively. Vegas’ three players were the most of any team this week. The top half, however, remain completely unchanged and Orange County and San Jose remain deadlocked at 22 apiece, and Baltimore continues to hold onto it’s one spot lead over Arizona.
As always, if you have any comments, corrections, or question, I’d love to hear them below.
*Just a reminder, this ranking is not necessarily indicative of how well a team’s defense is operating as a whole, just how many times a player from that team has appeared on our list.
