Aaaand it's back. The lineal championship of the National Simulation Football League, last seen in the hands of the Arizona Outlaws; after they upset the Orange County Otters in the final regular season game of season 8. In a humorous (depending on perspective, I suppose) twist, that win also passed the Tank's Baton to the Otters, who would then have the dubious honour of being the first team to carry the Baton into the post-season. Their defeat in the ASFC Championship meant that the Baton would stay in Santa Ana over the summer, waiting for their chance to make the pass at the start of season 9.
Kicking off season 9, the holders of the NSFL Championship Belt -- the Outlaws; who still possessed the record for the longest streak of successful defenses -- travelled to Denver, where an improved Yeti team awaited. A 23-16 win for the home side meant the Outlaws returned to Arizona empty-handed, and the Yeti held the Belt for only the second time in franchise history. It would not be a long reign. A complete 41-6 demolition in The Aviary at the hands of the Hawks -- who many were tipping for an Ultimus victory -- saw the Yeti return home without the strap this time. Elsewhere, the Otters had wasted no time passing the Baton, convincingly beating the San Jose Sabercats in Santa Ana in opening week. The Sabercats had a good chance to pass it straight on as they hosted the rebuilding Philadelphia Liberty the following week, but fell short in a 27-24 defeat; Beat Meoff nailing a fourth quarter field goal from 42 yards to put Philly ahead, before three consecutive three-and-outs for the Sabercats.
The Hawks would retain the Belt in week three, travelling to Phoenix and making sure the Outlaws did not rise again, dealing them a 24-9 defeat. The Sabercats, meanwhile, fell to the Yeti in Denver, failing in their attempt to pass the Baton in a 20-7 defeat. While the Hawks' reign would be cut short by a heavy defeat in Santa Ana -- the Otters laying down the law in their own house to the tune of a 34-14 victory -- the Sabercats would have no such luck, suffering a 27-16 defeat in San Jose at the hands of the Yellowknife Wraiths.
It would be a miserable few weeks for the Sabercats following that, as they lost three straight games, including back to back losses against Ultimus favourites the Hawks and Second Line, where they mustered a combined ten points. The third defeat was in Arizona, as the Outlaws sent them home, Baton in hand, after a 29-17 result. Meanwhile, the Otters, perhaps missing the California sun, fell 28-13 in Yellowknife, giving the Wraiths the belt. Interestingly, the Yeti, having just passed the Baton, had a shot at the Belt immediately after, with the Wraiths coming to Denver for week six. A thrilling 35-28 encounter saw the Wraiths emerge victorious, Belt still in their possession.
The Liberty then welcomed the Belt holders, the Wraiths, to Taco Bell Stadium in week seven, and despite the inconsistencies of the Wraiths thus far in the season, few would have predicted the Liberty would snatch the Belt from the Canadian team in a 38-17 win. Philadelphia's joy was short-lived, however, as they travelled to Louisiana and suffered a 58-10 torching in the Meme Coliseum at the hands of the Second Line. Elsewhere, the Otters were stunned by their in-state rivals, who successfully made a Baton pass in a 28-23 win in the HP Pavilion.
Week nine saw the Second Line travel to Orange County to take on arguably their only real rivals for the ASFC Championship this season, in a surprise Belt-vs-Baton game, and they came away with a hard-fought 24-15 win to retain the Belt. They would follow this up, however, with an unexpected 30-24 loss to the Wraiths, the ASFC front-runners suffering only their second defeat of the season as they handed over the Belt. The Liberty found themselves back in possession of the Baton that same week, being on the wrong side of a 44-9 result in Santa Ana.
Yellowknife continued their high-scoring in week eleven, dominating the Sabercats in a 48-7 win at the Burial Grounds, and setting up an interesting title game against the Otters for week twelve. Perhaps in a reversal of their previous encounter this season, the Wraiths missed the cold, falling 30-19 in Santa Ana in week twelve, and relinquishing the Belt after just one successful defense. Meanwhile, the Outlaws managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory as the Liberty successfully make a Baton pass, completing a late turnaround to beat the visiting Outlaws by just three points -- Beat Meoff again the hero, landing a 36 yarder in overtime, after Logan Noble found Carter Bush at the death of the fourth quarter, and the Liberty made the two point conversion to force another period. The following week, the Outlaws were rolled over by the juggernaut that is the Second Line, setting up another Belt-vs-Baton showdown at Outlaw Stadium for week thirteen, as the Belt-holding Otters came to town.
Predictably, the Otters were dominant, winning the game 35-3, before heading to Colorado for the final week of regular season. We'll come back to that in a minute. The Outlaws, meanwhile, were able to finally pass the Baton in week fourteen, when they travelled to San Jose, winning 27-14 to ensure the Baton remained in California over the summer for the second year running. Now, about that trip the Otters made to Colorado... a shock win for the home side, 40-23, had serious implications, effectively putting the Yeti into the playoffs for the first time in eight years, and meaning that the Belt went to the postseason in the hands of an NSFC team.
The NSFC Championship was a fantastic battle between the Hawks and Yeti -- the latter seriously stepping their game up after being thoroughly outclassed in their previous encounters with the Hawks this season -- culminating in the Hawks going into the Ultimus Bowl as Belt holders, where either they or the Second Line would emerge with all the marbles. Sadly for the Hawks, they fell to a third Ultimus defeat, as the Second Line finalised their Legion rebrand-slash-redemption story with a 37-24 win to become both official and unofficial NSFL champions.
