I got the honor of sitting with Mo Berry and got the chance to talk about the final days of the prospect bowl playoffs and all that lead up to the draft. Mo Berry how's it going?
I'm doing great thanks for having me.
First I have to ask how was the prospect bowl for you? You are already a champion before you were drafted that has to feel good.
It was a great time. Starting out losing the first two games was rough but as a team we all got together and lit a fire under everyone and we started to click on the field. Next thing you know e won the last three games not only getting us into the playoffs but getting us home field advantage was especially huge. Winning the prospect bowl championship was awesome going up against some of the best rookies coming into the league and being able to win it all makes you feel good. On the other hand the stats I put did not make me feel good. In those two games I only had three tackles and one pass defended. I was worried that it might have an impact on my draft status. I had to put that behind me because I was proud to win a championship with my brothers from the Legion of Hoot. At the end of the day it's a team sport and I just want what is best for the team and that's winning championships. Hopefully this is the first of many for me.
So now I want to ask you what was the scouting process like for you?Was there a lot of team scouting and interview ling you? Or did you feel kinda left in the dark during the whole process?
It was definitely an interesting time. These interviews are the biggest interviews of your life and they can either make.or break you. My interviews I had with the General Managers that reached out we're great though. I felt so comfortable with every single one. I won't name who I talked with because I respect their confidentiality but I can definitely say each and every one of the GMs were helpful and gave plenty of advice for my future success in the league.
So draft day is here, what was going through your mind and your reaction to being picked at number 34? Did you feel like you should have been higher?
Honestly I was shocked I fell so far down to the sixth round. I felt that I had great interviews with everyone I talked to and was told I would be their guy or high on their board. In my own biased opinion I feel like I'm the best linebacker in this class and should have gone 1st overall. I will prove that in the future on the field. With a more level headed look at the selections it makes a lot of sense to who went to what teams and at what pick. At the end of the day, it was God's plan to end up where I ended up at.
so how does it feel to be a Marshal? What was it like getting that phone call from San Antonio?
Honestly I was shocked, going to a team that is know for their defense it is very exciting. I believe they led the league in scoring defense and they had scored three safeties. When pick 34 was on the clock, I was in the living room with my family eating when I got a phone call from an area code I didn't know. I answered and it was General Manager TC of the San Antonio Marshals. First thing he said to me was "Mr. Berry how do you feel about being a Marshal." I told him hell yeah I'll be a Marshal. Mr. TC then talked to me a little bit more "I'm sure little bit surprised but I got a whole plan worked up and you and Bode are going to help me with that." I told him whatever he needs me to do I'm his man.
That must be exciting getting drafted to the same team as your former teammate and linebacker Quenton Bode.
Oh yeah I'm very excited to go back out there with Bode and tear it up just like we did while playing for Nebraska. We already have great chemistry together and I know we will be able to transfer that to the professional level. That's not the only former teammate I'm excited to play with again because we also drafted three other players from the Pacific Owls. The Marshals also drafter my big homies Memphis Wilkerson and Bruce Waynner from the defensive line. I also look forward to the speed demon Neon Demon being on the outside locking Wide receivers down for the game. I wish I could have had more of the Legion of Hoot come to San Antonio but I look forward to meeting my new teammates and put the hurt on the other teams offenses.
What is next for Mo Berry now that the draft is over and you're officially a San Antonio Marshal
First things first is getting to the practice field learning the new system and getting ready to bring another Ultimini back to San Antonio. As for myself, they will always remember the Alamo but I will make sure they always remember Mo Berry as the best linebacker there ever was. Now if you will excuse me I got some work to do.
