Kansas City Coyotes - 13 @
Norfolk Seawolves - 35[/div]
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]QB:
Rose Jenkins (@Jiggly_333)
Ryan Leaf Jr. (@ValorX77)
Both Jenkins and Leaf had a rough first game of the season. They're working with almost all new offensive weapons aside from WR J.N. Nova (@sarmo) since a swarm of rookies have worked their way into starting positions. Playcalling and chemistry will take some time to develop as the season goes on.
Jenkins threw 102 yards on 13 completions and had 2 picks by Seawolves defenders Logan Uchiha (@CalvinP) and Lucas Knight (@ven_knight) with one taken back for a touchdown. The sophomore QB is working with an offense filled to the brim with rookies so it will take some time to get into the groove but I'm sure we'll see a bounce back.
Leaf Jr. wasn't able to get much going either in this game. He threw for 107 yards on 12 completions with a touchdown and an interception. Leaf seemed to have the same issues that Jenkins was having behind the Center with the only saving grace for his stat line being the very late touchdown pass to TE Cameron Olsen (@Rradum). He showed a lot of promise in the Prospect Bowl helping the Pacific Owls take home the gold and his 87 yard rushing touchdown was talked about around the world. We only saw one rushing attempt out of him in Week 1 for 26 yards and I'm sure we'll be seeing more. He has a great teacher in Rose Jenkins so it will be exciting to see his growth throughout the season.
RB:
Terry Taffy (@KingCollins)
Farley Hank (@Beebob)
Jay Quick (@Ramrod18)
Ronald St. James III (@coffeebeard)
There are plenty of running backs on the Coyote offense and all of them are rookies. The Coyotes were running what seemed to be a committee with Taffy and Hank getting the bulk of the carries.
Terry Taffy was a big name being talked about in the Prospect Bowl and the DSFL Draft. He was an absolute monster in the Prospect Bowl, showing that he had what it takes to be in the DSFL and beyond. He didn't meet expectations against the Seawolves but the reasoning could be anything from first game jitters to not being completely prepared for this type of competition. He ended with 31 yards rushing on 8 attempts and was also an asset in the passing game finishing with 42 yards through the air. There are high expectations for him to perform at a high level and I think that he is more than capable to do that. There is plenty of football left to be played to show it.
Farley Hank split the bulk of the carries with Taffy getting 38 yards on 7 rushing attempts. He wasn't as much of an asset in the passing game as Taffy was but he was still targeted heavily and gained 13 yards. Hank was the first pick by the Coyotes in this seasons draft so it seems like him and Taffy will be in a split backfield until one of them shows that they can be a bellcow running back.
Quick and James didn't seem to have as much of an impact as Hank and Taffy did in the backfield. Quick had a rough 2 yards on 6 carries where both of those yards were from one play, and he was targeted once for 9 yards receiving. James was only given the ball 3 times but seemed to make them count for 24 total yards averaging 8 yards per carry. A larger sample size will be needed by both of these backs in order to get a better understanding of their playstyle and how they will meet the expectations of the team.
WR:
J.N. Nova (@sarmo)
Cedric Parker (@rohanm)
Despite the rough showing of both Jenkins and Leaf, Nova and Parker did what they could down the field. This duo will be dangerous as the weeks go on.
Nova is the only non-rookie offensive weapon that Jenkins and Leaf have so of course they're going to rely heavily on him. He made 8 catches for a solid 98 yards accounting for almost half of the Coyotes passing offense. Sadly, Nova did not score a touchdown, but I can see him getting plenty of opportunities for that at this rate.
Parker is what you want in a number two wide receiver. He gained 36 yards on 4 receptions netting a 9 yards per carry average. Like I stated above, once the passing attack gets moving for the Coyotes, Parker and Nova are going to light up the field.
TE:
Cameron Olsen (@Rradum)
Disclaimer: This is me.
Cameron Olsen was the second pick for the Kansas City Coyotes going at #11 overall so there are high expectations for him to produce. Sadly, in this game, that wasn't the case. He only caught the ball twice for 11 yards and a touchdown from Ryan Leaf Jr. in garbage time. He's stated that he wants to be a safety net for his QB so maybe we will see that in the weeks to come. His training shows he has what it takes to make a big impact so as long as he keeps that up he should do well.[/div]
