In my second edition of this series, we're going to talk about the best players from Weeks 3 and 4. We aren't including people's work from Weeks 1 and 2, and if they make the list again, they've just been great in all four weeks. So with that out of the way, let's talk about the best of Weeks 3 and 4.
San Antonio Marshals
RBs Morgan Marshall and Max Vaz (@`EnfysNest` & @Skyandbray)
Hey look, it's that guy they named the team after and he brought a friend. You can debate whether San Antonio or Norfolk have the best running back tandem until the cows come home, but the last two weeks have been special for the San Antonio running back corps. Both Marshall and Vaz broke 100 rushing yards in BOTH Week 3 and Week 4. Even with Cooter Bigsby becoming a more consistent passer as of late, the San Antonio offense runs through Marshall and Vaz. Vaz in particular is playing WAY above his TPE and if he can keep improving there's no telling what his future looks like.
S Walt Green (@Duilio05)
Bad news, teams are still throwing to Walt Green, why is no one listening to me? Through four games, Green has six interceptions. The next closest has two. The all-time DSFL record for interceptions in a season is eight, which at this rate, he'll hit that by Week 6. If he keeps up this pace through an entire season, he'll end up with more than 20. What I'm trying to say is that Walt Green is really good at this whole defense thing. Is that not clear? Those numbers were buoyed by a three pick game against a Solar Bears team that's still trying to get their passing game figured out, and that's coming from someone IN the Solar Bears passing game.
Portland Pythons
WR Bona'beri Jones (@toivo)
The elite teams in the DSFL are starting to get their passing offense going, and in the last two weeks, Bona'beri Jones has become the go-to target in the Portland offense. In the last two games, he's pulled down nine catches for 200 yards and 3 TDs. If Roman Stakowski is Franklin Armstrong's safety valve, then Bona'beri Jones is Armstrong's strong arm target. And seeing as how he's now leading the DSFL in both receiving yards and yards per reception, I think he's established himself as the best deep threat in the league.
LB Gekyume Stokeley (@soryantyler)
It's not just the Pythons offense that's rolling, their defense gets to the quarterback with frightening regularity. Ten sacks in the last two games and the majority of those were registered by Gekyume Stokeley with four. Stokeley has all the attributes needed to terrorize a quarterback: speed, tackling, endurance, strength, and a rapidly improving intelligence. There's going to be quite a few people to worry about if you're facing the Pythons (Lee, Grievous, Emoji, D'Attoria V), and this second year LB may be chief among them.
Norfolk Seawolves
WR Ahri Espeeyeeseetee (@steelsound)
He's just looking for a little respect. Just a little bit. The Seawolves may not have an elite QB (Jay Longshaw is good, but he has a ways to go), but he at least has a solid receiver he can target in Espeeyeeseetee. Ahri is far and away the Seawolves #1 receiver. He does have a problem with drops, he had four in Week 4 alone. But he also has terrific speed and a good amount of agility. There's room for improvement, which is fine, because what he's contributed already is pretty promising.
LB Marquees Acho (@Huskies311)
Besides Allen Josh, there aren't that many exciting prospects on the Seawolves defense, but Acho has shown glimpses of brilliance. Acho seems to be excelling in pass coverage, especially in Week 4 against Tijuana where he snagged an interception that he took for six points. He also deflected a couple of passes and recorded six tackles. Josh may be the star of this Norfolk defense, but Acho is a key contributor who's putting in some good work.
Tijuana Luchadores
RB Forrest Gump (@TomHanks)
I think maybe something got lost in translation from the movie. I seem to recall Gump being fast as hell and being a terror in the return game. However, what I'm seeing is a fantastic short yardage back. He scored four rushing touchdowns (and a receiving touchdown) in the last two weeks, and three of them were from three yards from the goal line or closer. Gump is great at avoiding contact and finding extra yards where there aren't any to find. Maybe he's smarter than he's letting on.
LB Dick Cheese Jr. (@BaseScoutX1)
Welp, can't say that name too many times without setting off the censors, but Cheese was a maniac against San Antonio in Week 3, picking up 13 tackles, one of which went for a loss, and forcing a fumble, which he also recovered. He was doing everything he could to get the Luchadores back into the game. He has been known to take some games off, but we just saw him on his game, and that Dick scares me. (wait a minute, can I get a do-over on that one?)
Kansas City Coyotes
QB Rose Jenkins (@Jiggly_333)
I get what the Coyotes are doing with giving Ryan Leaf Jr. time at quarterback. Rose won't be there forever, and they don't want to send someone out there with no experience whatsoever (something something Apollo Lange), but this is actively killing the Coyotes season. Jenkins is a good passer, she'll be throwing in the majors soon, her team should not be 0-4, and the reason it's happening is because Leaf keeps derailing their drives. Here's my tip to fix the Yotes. More Jenkins, less Leaf, and either find a new successor or start training Leaf better.
S Derek Bohne (@wuma)
Opposing teams sounded like Captain Holt from Brooklyn 99, because they were screaming BOOOOHNE!!!! Bohne has been making his presence felt a lot lately. He recorded six tackles and a sack in both of the last couple of games, and in Week 3, he also forced one fumble and recovered two. He has a nose for the ball and can turn the tide for a defense with just a single play. He just needs to improve his pass coverage, as so far on the season, he's not recorded a deflection or interception.
Palm Beach Solar Bears
RB Ben Bortboy (@spinarnie)
The last couple of games have been a nightmare scenario for the Solar Bears, but there's been a few bright spots, like Ben Bortboy, who's been averaging about 80 yards rushing in the last two games. In the first two weeks, Ludicolo Bigby got a hefty workload and in the last two weeks, the split has been a lot more even. He probably would've gotten more work, but his team had to abandon the run game pretty early in both games. Hopefully the offense makes some adjustments over the weekend and Bortboy gets a chance to shine.
LB Rock Hardshaft (@Rouchicus)
And this post in now under investigation. There's a lot to like on this Solar Bears defense. Guy Nikko still leads the D-League in sacks, Tony Gabagool had a 14 tackle game, and Deon Taylor blocked a punt. But Hardshaft is currently leading the league in tackles. Maybe that has to do with the Solar Bears defense being on the field a lot, but Hardshaft is putting in a lot of work. He's leading this Bears defense, and if the offense can get any kind of forward momentum, Hardshaft may be a DPotY contender.
