A society that has spanned history and fiction, the Amazons were revered for their bloodlust. Within Greek mythology, the Amazons were believed to be tribal warrior women. The daughters of Ares, they were brutal, aggressive and obsessed with war. It is disputed, where the Amazons lived and made their homes, depending upon if you choose to listen to Herodotus and Strabo, or instead listen to Homer, however it is agreed that many Amazonians lived close to the city of Terme, in modern day Turkey. History had many names for these warrior women, including, “those who loathe all men,” “equivalent to men,” “destroyers of men,” and my personal favorite, “unwed, flesh-devouring Amazons.”
While ordinarily seen as a group that did not desire men, the Amazons were in fact frequent lovers of men. It wasn’t an intense dislike, but rather an unyielding blood lust that fielded their people. Creating early sets of armor from snake skins, it becomes no wonder that the Amazons infiltrate the football field, in both play and uniform design concepts.
While modern day Amazons do not share this seemingly intense hatred for men, they do still relish in the fields of battle and the feelings of power. For those unfamiliar with the Amazonian women, they tend to be incredibly tall and powerful. While our societies are still matriarchal, we thrive on empowering our women and letting them take leadership roles they may otherwise be deprived of. The Amazonian women tended to create positive relationships, particularly with more difficult or ‘mysterious’ civilizations (such as the Atlantians), which makes it clear why they would continue to develop relationships with mysterious civilizations as society goes on (El Chupacabra, the Gryphons, Yetis, and the monsters of Loch Ness to name a few.)
With two sides of warriors facing off in elite armor, the Amazonian women needed to use every advantage that they had. When the University of Michigan established their football program in 1879, the Amazonian women were there, recognizing this new field of play. Adaptation was important for Amazonian women. While they were engaged in many battles historically, Amazonian women sat quietly in the background, biding time till they could rear their heads in victory on the modern battlefield. This battlefield, of course, is the football field. Amazonian women quickly set to learn these new rules for battle, and carried on to victory in early games.
As the safety of their warriors became more and more apparent, the Amazonian women realized the need and importance of developing new armor for this new battlefield. While still understanding the intricacies involved in the damage they may ascertain from football plays, the Amazonians started with simple development of football uniforms. By the 1960s uniforms became more brightly colored, sharing the symbols of strength and power that the football teams expressed, and the Amazonians took great pride in memorializing their ancient relationships through some of these mascots.
Modern football safety equipment was viewed as the armor for their battlefield. Amazonian women tend to be credited with the creation of the modern football helmet, after all, many helmets featured full head coverage, decorative designs, and facial coverings to prevent lacerations to these creatures of beauty. Padding to protect the shoulders and chest of the warriors was equally important. Unfortunately for most men engaged in this new battle, Amazonian women thought these male warriors weak for desiring something to protect their scrotal flesh. It was solely up to the men to integrate the modern ‘cup’ into the uniform.
As the Amazonian women began to invest and engage in this new battlefield, they quickly realized where their strengths lay. While many Amazonian women were tall, they were not necessarily large enough to play linebacker positions. Quick on their feet, and tall, however, made them suitable for catching the ball, particularly above their opponent. The Amazonian’s longer legs also allowed them to create even more force when kicking a football.
While some may argue that the Amazonian women have won the genetic lottery when it comes to the football field, they simply view it as another field of battle. A place to destroy their enemy and make them feel inferior and small. The Amazonian women work hard to train and be at the top of their fields, no matter which position or job they select. The more blood lust is available, however, the better.
