First of all I would like to say that the name change was overdue and an excellent choice to both shift away from "NSFL" and embrace the international nature of the league. Some other potential changes that could improve the quality of the league in my own opinion could include letting users who already play OL or less stat driven positions to creat an OL user to help shift away from bots and towards a more user driven team, another change would be to implement retroactive tpe gains for users that join later in the cycle of the season to have close to the same amount as other draftees rather than letting those who wait til the deadline have an advantage, or providing more community events to help foster community growth and fun away from the sims and players. Another change that I would like to see in the league would be to loosen some of the tampering regulations after the deadline has passed for players who are in the final year of the contract or have confirmed to use their option, would need to change the option system. Lastly, the draft process is often the focal point of a players time in the league so implementing league wide events and streams would help make this time more enjoyable.
Overall I think the league runs quite well for the most part. I understand where the name change came from but it kind of sucks we gave into terrorists. I’ve known the other meaning of NSFL for a long time, but from day one of joining the league only associated the acronym with the league. In regards to changes that should be made I have a simple one that I preach every time it’s relevant to a task or media. I think that requiring new users to be approved before posting is too overbearing and the site should have the usual standard of only needing to register to post. There’s a chance you lose the occasional user from the unnecessary extra step. In my time in SHL and PBE I’ve only noticed a single spambot and it was dealt with pretty quickly. Users on the site even had an amusing time attempting to communicate with the bot. Making a user wait for the extra time needed for admin approval, especially someone who is signing up to their first sim league and curious about it is a deterrent. I’m sure everyone has a similar experience where they want to check out a random site or app, but it requires you to sign up so you’re like “nevermind it’s not worth the added effort”. This is my thinking on the admin approval.
P.S. Thank you for temporarily bringing back 2x media (That I accidentally missed), but make it the standard bonus.
Although the new name change will take some getting used to, I think it makes quite a bit of sense. NSFL, while kinda funny, doesn't really represent the league. So I get it. If I were to change things, I would have changed the name to something like the SFL. Simulation Football League. A simple acronym lot rolls off the tongue. I don't mind ISFL, though.
If the International Simulation Football League is indeed the new name, the next change I would make is to make the league more international. I know that we have players from all over the globe and our teams should better represent that. We have a handful of teams that are "international" between the DSFL and the ISFL, but we should make it a focus for a percentage (or all) of any expansion teams to be outside of the United States. Except for my expansion Wichita Warriors, that is. Hell, if I get to make the rules then I'm going to go ahead and give myself an exception.
Beyond that, my biggest "complaint" has been the ease of use of the message board, especially for new players. A system to streamline things like predictions, activity checks, trivia, and all the other weekly tasks would help quite a bit. Although, from the new announcements it looks like a system like that is taking shape. That's great!
All in all, I think the league is in a good place. Could it be better? Sure. But the fact that the league continues to evolve is a good sign of things to come.
The irony of doing this point task is not lost on me given that I am heavily involved with some of the initiatives that are aiming to bring some much needed improvements to the league from a platform perspective.
First of all there will be a forum migration. I recently found out, that jcink actually runs on a forum software from the early 2000's. So moving away is a priority and will happen soon. This gives us full control over our forum, both in terms of looks and functionality, and will make it easier for use to more seemlessly integrate other tools.
One such tool, will eventually be a full player & bank management system, taking away a lot of the manual overhead that is required at the moment. It will aim to make everything simpler and more streamlined, starting from basic player creation going to full on management of things TPE & bank related, all using your forum login.
I truly believe that making some of the everyday tasks more hassle-free and easier for new players to understand will have a tremendous positive impact on the rates of engagement and overall enjoyment of the league. I hope that we all be able to focus on more football and less admin as a result.
One of the biggest changes that I think needs to be made is the process for our awards and pro bowl nominations and voting. In the short time that I’ve been here, every season there has been some unnecessary, obnoxious, blown out of proportion drama related to the pro bowl, awards, or hall of fame. One minor change that I believe would cut down on some of the toxicity would be to hide vote counts from all of these nominations, only displaying the winners or a ranked order of the nominees. I’ve seen multiple times where somebody has a great season and earns a well deserved pro bowl award only to complain on the forums or discord that they weren’t chosen unanimously. I understand that snubs happen in the real world too, so it’s understandable when people are upset. However, given the nature of the site and community in that everybody for the most part knows who each other are, these snubs or perceived slights end up creating a more toxic environment where people hold grudges against their peers over awards that in the end are made up and meaningless. Other than the issues with the site, which I’m sure has already been discussed to death in this thread and was actually announced to be moving shortly before I wrote this, I feel like awards are the biggest issue.
Oh man oh man I hate this PT. No offense to it but its a loaded option. There's a lot I would potentially change, but with a lot of it I don't have a better suggestion and I HATE bitching about stuff if I don't have a better alternative. It just feels dumb. I'll pick two things to ramble about I guess. The first is the sim engine, something I have way too much experience in and despise. I don't have a better option however, but man do I hate this thing. It doesn't work right, its mysterious, its got random things that I'm convinced are hidden attributes. Its a literal garbage can of a sim engine. We do what we can though. My second biggest pet peeve with the league is actually DSFL specific. In what is essentially meant to be a developmental league there is way too much of a focus on winning. Not that we shouldn't try to win - putting your best product on the field (within reason) is part of motivating new players to be invested in the league. That being said, in the last few seasons it seems like winning has become the major motivation - over building a strong LR. This just feels wrong to me, our job as DSFL GMs and really just players in general who are all in some way effecting the DSFL, is to help develop players. That doesn't always come from winning - its part of it - but making sure your players know how to update, are getting involved in the league through media, graphics, and jobs, etc is more important than winning. Oh well, I'm just rambling now but man it frustrates me. Build a good LR and the winning will come. Don't try to win first - that just creates issues.
Written Option: The league has made a major change recently, one which will hopefully prevent future accidental Discord incursions by neo-Nazis getting confused by our less-than-appropriate name. In your view, what are some other changes you think need to be made to the league, its rules, or how it runs? Are there any pressing changes or issues that you think should be fixed?
To be completely honest, I didn't know why the league had to change names but after talking and learning what the abbreviation meant, I fully support the decision that the league made to change it. Since I first joined the league a couple of seasons, I really think that this is one of the best run sim leagues out there. One rule that I think should be changed for the DSFL is that the player TPE cap should be at 300. I think I got to 250 way to quickly and now I have a bunch of TPE that I can't put towards my player because I'm capped out. I know that this will cause a better gap between newly drafted players and the rest of the players in the DSFL but the league is very much a run based offense so I don't see this being a big issue. Other than that, I think that the rules are all pretty good from what I've seen so far. I haven't really looked into most of the rulebooks and everything as I let the GMs do all the hard work but since I've been apart of this community, everything has been ran pretty smoothly and even if there's a problem, the head office has been very good.
One thing I think that the league could do to make things better is to have commentary again. A bunch of people like music and I get that but it just feels meh and cheap without hearing at least some explanation about whats going on or some context. In my last year with the Developmental sim football league, I really didn't care to watch any of the National sim football league games or even the First couple International football sim league games. Of course this means that I'm asking for people to put in work that I don't want to do and its definitely not something I can just demand or something that I think is 100% needed but its something that I think would definitly make the games more interesting if you don't have a player involved or there isn't any playoff implications involved. Granted some of the reason why we don't have commentary anymore is pretty valid and is still prevalent. The sweetwater era was something that I was on the down slope of but was something that I really enjoyed in my first year way back in S17. I'm sure as long as we follow a simple list of rules such as not having firearms in the commentary and asking the commentators to stay sober we most definitely won't have the same couple of events happen.
