Top 10 Career PDs for Current Players - Season 23
I’m back with the second entry into my series on current leaders in career Pass Deflections. The top 10 has changed quite a lot since we last looked at it with many players retiring. With the schedule moving to 16 games it’s very possible that the Top 10 Career PD list will be completely different in 15 seasons. The following is the Top 10 Career PDs for Current Players only. That’s kind of misleading because I know at least one player in this top 10 retired before the season started, but I’m counting any player that recorded PDs in Season 23 as Current. Some big names from last season's list are no longer on this list. Grithead, Taylor, Emoji, and Ridley are all gone from the list and they ended their careers with over 100 PDs each. With that said here is the current Top 10:
Johnny Snuggles - 177
Mo Berry - 126
Lucas Knight - 117
Richard D’Attoria V - 115
Alex Selich - 114
Dermot Lavelle Jr. - 108
AJ Lattimer - 103
Mervin Leonard - 88
Jordan Andrews - 87
Louisiana Purchase - 77
Johnny Snuggles returns to the list and this time he is atop the list instead of in 2nd where he was last season. Even at his advanced age he managed 15 PDs this season. He has a massive lead on the rest of the players in this list, but he is also rapidly approaching retirement, but I think he has at least one more season left. With two more he might become the second player in league history to break the 200 Pass Deflections mark. Either way he has had a truly impressive career, and should easily be a hall of famer when all is said and done.
Mo Berry slots in at number 2 on the list. Up from sixth last season he had a superb season with 18 pass deflections. If he keeps it up he’ll be the first linebacker to be in the Top 10 list for career PDs.
Lucas Knight is third with 117 PDs. He had 11 this past season and moved up from seventh on the list last season. One of two Sarasota players on this top 10 he is also the oldest Sarasota player. While he has hit regression he still has a few seasons left to continue to climb this list.
Richard D’Attoria V is next up on the list and is up to fourth from 9th last season. He had 18 PDs this season to rocket up the rankings. After a couple seasons in a row with low PD numbers I’m sure he was happy to have a big boost to his stats this season. He doubled his PDs from last season, which is impressive to say the least.
Next up is Alex Selich who stays in the fifth position after getting only 1 PD all season. If I’m not mistaken I think regression may force Selich’s hand and make him retire after this season. He at most has one season remaining, but don’t expect many more PD’s from him.
Coming in at sixth is a familiar name when it comes to the Top 10 PD list even though he was only 10th last season and that is Dermot Lavelle Jr. The son of the player with the top spot that even with the new 16 game schedule may never lose his spot atop the leaderboard. Lavelle Jr had another solid season with 15 PDs. This is now his seventh season in a row with double digit pass deflections. An impressive streak that looks to continue for at least a few more seasons. WIth 108 PDs he has a long way before he catches his father, and he might never do it, but he can at the very least make his way into the top 10 career list by the time he retires.
At seventh on the list is AJ Lattimer. The first new player on the list! Lattimer retired at the end of last season, so this is his one and only appearance on this list. If he hadn’t spent the first few seasons of his career on the defensive line he might have been much higher on this list. In his six seasons at cornerback he amassed 103 pass deflections and never had lower than 12 PDs. He averaged over 17 pass deflections a season reaching a high of 24 last season.
Mervin Leonard is next up at eighth with 88 pass deflections. He is one of the younger players on this list as most of the list above him is season 15 or older. The lone player above Leonard that is not season 15 is Dermot who is season 16. Leonard is a cornerback for the Yellowknife Wraiths and has surpassed 15 pass deflections in four of his six seasons. This past season he had 18 pass deflections. He’s one of the top players in the league in TPE with 1253, so expect him to continue to climb this list each season for quite some time.
An old teammate of mine, Jordan Andrews, is ninth on the list. Andrews was a Second Line player that was taken by Sarasota in the expansion draft. He is just one pass deflection behind Leonard with 87 for his career and that’s the case for this past season too where he had 17 pass deflections. These past two seasons have really been a resurgence for Andrews who had back to back seasons of less than five PDs in S20 and S21, but the past two seasons he has 16 and 17 PDs. He’s been inactive since early May, so regression will keep his stats from continuing to rise in just a few seasons, but he’ll more than likely be on this list for at least a few more seasons.
The final spot on this top 10 goes to the first season 18 player to make this list and the third Yeti, and that’s Louisiana Purchase. Purchase had his best season so far with 18 pass deflections to get him into this final spot with 77 PDs at this point in his career. I’m not going to lie, I was hoping to take the honor of being the first season 18 player on this list myself, but that didn’t happen as Purchase beat me out by 3 PDs. Purchase was the first corner taken in the season 18 draft and was taken fourth overall by the Colorado Yeti, where he is now their top CB. He has many seasons left to climb this ranking to the top, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him do it either.
There you have it the updated list of Top 10 Career PDs for Current Players. One last thing I wanted to do was look at the top Pass Deflectors from this past season. Interestingly, none of them broke into the top 10 list for a season even though the number of games was expanded. Four players did however have 20 PDs or more and those were Jim Waters and Korrin Abbernathy who each had 24. Waters did it in his first season, which is impressive and if he keeps that up he’ll make this list very soon. Also young second year player Zamir Kehla with 21 PDs and another young CB in Eldrick Avery with 20 PDs. Interesting that it’s the young guys for the most part that had the most PDs this past season. Anyways, I hope you enjoyed the second entry in this series. Hopefully I’ll be able to add myself to the top 10 next season!
