Welcome to the first “Player of the Week” awards that I hope will become a regular feature. Note that these are not official awards and are only my opinions. If you think differently, write your own damn media article. I will be naming who I think is the best player on both sides of the ball along with a few runners up, and also notable players who contributed on special teams.
First up, we’re gonna take a look at the players with the best offensive performances in ASFC:
This week’s ASFC Offensive Player of the Week award goes to the Austin Copperheads’ rookie running back Zoe Watts. In her first ISFL game, Watts rushed for a total of 56 yards, scoring 3 times and racking up another 23 yards receiving. Anyone who’s been paying attention to her career shouldn’t be surprised that she made an immediate impact, but her 3 scores are impressive nonetheless. Austin has to be feeling pretty good about their most recent first round draft pick.
The first honorable mention for the offense goes to Copperheads wide receiver Eddie Jeeta. Eddie led a potent Copperheads passing attack with 105 yards receiving on 8 receptions, including a 14 yard touchdown catch in the second quarter. Also having a great start to the season was New Orleans Second Line running back Marcella Tōriki, who had 80 yards rushing on 13 attempts for an impressive 6.2 yards per carry. She also had a fourth quarter rushing touchdown that put the Second Line in the lead for good and 23 receiving yards.
Now for the defensive side of the ball.
There were actually quite a few impressive performances this week, but New York Silverbacks’ rookie linebacker Hank Winchester had an outstanding game. Winchester, the 13th pick in the latest ISFL draft, was all over the field in the first ever meeting between the Silverbacks and Berlin Fire Salamanders. Winchester had an spectacular 11 tackles, another tackle for loss, and 2 pass deflections. If that wasn’t enough, he added a 23 yard interception return late in the fourth quarter to tie New York up with Berlin. Not even a close competition for AFSC Player of the Week.
Other players with impressive defensive performances include Copperheads’ linebacker Mack Arianlacher, who had a great week with 5 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 pass deflections, and 1 interception. Orange County Otters’ safety Bob Bob had a nice day with 3 tackles, 1 sack, 1 pass deflection, and a 77 yard pick six. Finally, Arizona Outlaws’ safety Tayshawn Crunk had a fine start to their ISFL with a 3 tackle, 1 sack, 2 pass deflection, and 2 interception performance.
Finally, there were two players who had standout performances on special teams:
Special Teams. This week's special team player of the week was Silverbacks Ashley Owens with a 107 yard kickoff return touchdown. Honorable Mention goes to Orange County’s Korrin Abernathy, with a 94 yard kickoff return touchdown of their own.
Who was the NFSC offensive player of the week? Why, it’s everyone’s favorite banned import, Acura Skyline. While common knowledge says that running backs are supposed to, you know, run the ball, up in Yellowknife they’ve eschewed that and simply thrown the ball to the running back. While posting a paltry 16 yards of rushing, Skyline easily leads the league in receiving with 148 yards, and added a touchdown for good measure. Unfortunately Skyline’s outstanding performance did not lead to a Wraith’s victory, but Skyline was seen in the locker room after the game wearing a gaudy gold chain declaring himself the best receiver in the league.
Other players with outstanding offensive performances this week include Chicago Butchers quarterback George O’Donnell, who had 3 touchdowns on 314 yards passing with a 100 passer rating. O’Donnell threw two 4th quarter TDs to pull ahead of the Wraiths and a 31-27 win (insert sad Wraiths noises here.) NFSC wide receivers feasted this week. Colorado Yeti receiver William Lim had 112 yards on 6 catches and 1 touchdown. Philadelphia Liberty wide receiver Randy Vuxta had 115 yards on 4 catches and 1 score. Finally Baltimore Hawks rookie wide receiver Doug Howlett had 7 catches for 129 yards, but was unable to find the endzone.
This week's NFSC outstanding defensive player of the week award goes to Berlin Fire Salamanders cornerback Asher Quinn. Quinn, who the Fire Salamanders picked up during the most recent expansion draft, started his career with Berlin in style, with a 39 yard pick six only minutes into the game. Quinn also added 8 tackles and a pass deflection. The Fire Salamanders would go on to win on a last minute field goal.
Other notable defensive players this week include rookie Baltimore linebacker Gary Goodman, with 6 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and a sack. Hawks lineback Spike Suzuki led them with 9 tackles, a sack, and two pass deflections.Baltimore defensive end Matt Hole also contributed to the Hawks’ standout defensive effort with 5 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and a sack. Yellowknife lineback Douglas Quaid had 5 tackles, 2 sacks, and 2 pass deflections. Part panda, part mango, Sarasota Sailfish lineback Haha Mango-Panda had 5 tackles, 1 sack, and an impressive 3 pass deflections. Final
Finally, the most outstanding special teams performance for this week goes to Baltimore kicker Datsum Phastbawls. Phastbawls hit the game winning field goal with only 26 seconds remaining. He had two more field goals, and was 100% on extra points, adding 322 yards on 7 punts.
