KANSAS CITY, MO. - It's been quite a busy couple of weeks for North Carolina State University alumnus Nicholas Pierno, who was selected 45th overall by the NSFL's Yellowknife Wraiths and then 2nd overall by the Kansas City Coyotes in the inaugural DSFL Draft.
Going from Raleigh to Yellowknife, there was one thing lacking in Pierno's lifestyle in Northern Canada he knew he'd miss after growing up with it in his hometown of Raleigh, NC: BBQ. When Kansas City contacted the young quarterback in the days preceding the DSFL Draft and told him he'd be selected with the No. 2 overall pick, Pierno was ecstatic.
"On the field, I'm so happy I found a team that's willing to develop me into the best athlete I can be. By taking me so high, I know that they see the ceiling that scouts raved about, but I also know that Kansas City knows I can reach that ceiling or even punch through it and go higher," he said. "Off the field, I'm so happy I can play in a city with BBQ. It may be a bit chillier than Raleigh, but it's a heck of a lot warmer than Canada. I can't wait to fight for a title in the first-ever year of DSFL ball!"
Pierno was reportedly "ecstatic" with the Coyotes' second and third round picks, Jaquan Young, the wide receiver out of Wisconsin whose rights are owned by the Colorado Yeti, and Jordan Weal, an offensive lineman who was a Las Vegas Legion draft selection.
"What more could a young quarterback ask for?" Pierno said. "I got an extremely dangerous home run threat to throw to and a stud lineman to give me time to hit him. Knowing that I won’t be by myself on offense is a huge help.”
Pierno and the Coyotes kick off the preseason against at Chicago.
