Defensive Line Standouts - Week 10
Welcome to week 10 of our Season 3 Defensive Line Standouts! Every game matters at this point as teams are vying for one of the four highly coveted playoff spots. With Arizona having already clinched, only three spots remain for seven teams. Big time players make big plays in big games, so expect to see some frequent fliers on our list pop up with some mammoth performances. Enough chit chat… Let’s begin!
Defensive End Top Performers
F. Wozy
($ x6) 6 TCK, 3 TFL, 1 SCK
Making his sixth appearance and claiming the top spot on our list, Wozy finished the week with 6 tackles, 3 tackles, for loss and 1 sack. He continues to be one of the few bright spots on a struggling Yeti squad that was just annihilated by the Hawks, 47-0. Retaining players like Wozy, Tweed, and Saint is a must if the Yeti hope to be competitive in the near future. They Yeti will have yet another tough test next week when the host the 6-4 Orange County Otters.
O. Taylor
($ x6) 5 TCK, 1 TFL, 2 SCK
After another solid week for Taylor, finishing with 5 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 2 sacks, he was able to claim his sixth spot on our list. Taylor is currently second overall among defensive ends in sacks and fourth overall among all players for tackles for loss. Although he is the only Baltimore Hawks on the list this week, their line continues to function very well as a unit, with each player able to have a break-out game every week. They host the San Jose SaberCats next week in what is a must-win game if the Hawks want to repeat as the #1 seed in the NSFC.
J. Boom
($$$$) 6 TCK, 2 SCK
After a very successful first season, his true rookie season has been much quieter at first glance. However, after his 6 tackles and 2 sacks this week, he is currently ranked fifth in sacks among defensive ends with 9 on the season. His 4 appearances here are the second most of any player on the Orange County Otters. The Otters are on the road next week in what they hope will be an easy win against the 2-8 Colorado Yeti.
Other Great Performers
B. Blade
($ x5) 4 TCK, 2 SCK
V. Lockkeu
($$) 2 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK, 1 forced fumble
R. Maddox
($$) 3 TCK, 2 SCK
After his 4 tackles and 2 sacks this week, Blade is the only defensive end on our list with exactly 5 appearances. Lockkeu, the only true rookie defensive end on our list, is making his second appearance here and is the only player listed here to have a force fumble credited to his name this week. Maddox is only making his second showing on our list this week but has just barely missed making it multiple times. He has 9 sacks on the year, however, 4 came in 1 game.
Defensive Tackle Top Performers
B. Bjornsson
($ x8) 5 TCK, 2 SCK
Currently tied for second place with Sandoval on the defensive tackle list with 8 appearances, Bjornsson continues to be a massive factor on an otherwise average defensive unit. His 5 tackles and 2 sacks were a bright spot this week for a defense that ranks fourth in passing yards allowed and sixth in rushing yards allowed. Bjornsson will on the road next week as the Wraiths head to Arizona to face an undefeated Outlaws team.
G. King
($$$$) 4 TCK, 2 SCK
Much like Maddow above, King has made our list only 4 times but, is having a fantastic season. After his 4 tackles and 2 sacks this week, he currently sits at 13 sacks on the year. Although I don’t want to admit it, he has outplayed the Hawks rookie sensation Sandoval as of late, and should be strongly considered in the defensive rookie of the year talks. The Outlaws host the Yellowknife Wraiths next week as they continue their quest for the perfect season.
D. Miller
($ x10) 3 TCK, 2 SCK
The lone man on our list that has appeared every week, Miller clinched his spot with a 3 tackle and 2 sack performance. The King of the Strip-Sack, Miller has been without one for 3 weeks yet still leads the NSFL with 4 forced fumbles. He’ll have his work cut out for him next week as the SaberCats head to Baltimore to take on a Hawks offensive line that has allowed only 23 sacks on the year, the second least in the NSFL.
Other Great Performers
V. Cox
($ x7) 4 TCK, 2 TFL, 1 SCK
C Chambers III
($) 4 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
J. Cox
($$$) 2 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
Cox continues his domination from last year as he makes his seventh appearance on our list this week, enough to put him in fourth place among defensive tackles and fifth place overall. Chambers has had a shockingly quiet season as he is making his first appearance on our list this week. As a rookie however, growing pains are to be expected. The “other” Cox is making his third appearance on the year, this week just barely clinching his spot with 2 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 sack.
Team Appearances After Week 10*
Baltimore: 21 1
San Jose: 18 2
Arizona: 16 1
Orange County: 15 2
Las Vegas: 15 3
Yellowknife: 13 2
Philadelphia: 11 0
Colorado: 10 1
It has now become a three-man battle for second place with the defensive ends as Wozy, Taylor, and Tomlinson all have 6 appearances. They have all had fantastic seasons and I wouldn’t be surprised if any of them were to finish in that second spot. Tuck has a firm hold on first place for defensive ends with 8 appearances. In the defensive tackle race, Miller is in first with 10 appearances, while Sandoval and Bjornsson are tied for second with 8 appearances each. Dan Miller is the only player remaining who has made our list every week during Season 3. An impressive 10 times in 10 weeks, he’s inching closer and closer to the current record of 12, and a perfect 14.
The rankings remain unchanged this week, however, both Baltimore and Arizona lost some ground with only 1 player each on our list. Las Vegas led the pack with 3 players making the cut. Philadelphia was the only team to not have a player make our list this week yet was still able to hold onto the seventh spot in the rankings. Colorado sits in eighth place but was able to gain some ground on the Liberty. As always, if you have any comments, corrections, or question, I’d love to hear them below.
*Just a reminder, this ranking is not necessarily indicative of how well a team’s defense is operating as a whole. For example, Arizona leads the league in sacks by 18 but, is currently third on our list in number of individual appearances.
