With tonight being End of NSFL Season Eve (the 3rd most celebrated holiday in Latvia) one of the big questions is whether the Yeti will be better next year. But that's not what this column is about so let's talk about the MVP race instead. That seems more important anyway. Let's get right into it.
Dominic Verns
FS
Who? Exactly. Of all the defensive names that get talked about, Dom Verns never seems to be one. He's the most under the radar award candidate this season and it's not even close. He leads the entire league in tackles. He's tied for 4th in interceptions. Tied for 3rd for passes defensed. More sacks than any other player in the secondary and top 25 overall. One of only six players to force multiple fumbles.
How is someone wrecking so much shit in their general vicinity and still going largely unnoticed? Is it because he doesn't play for one of the sexy defenses? Is it becuase people only pay attention to the offense? I don't know. Whatever the reason, it's wrong. This guy needs to be in the conversation for DPOY, MVP, CEO, and other important acronyms as well. He's kicking approximately all of the ass.
Reg Mackworthy
RB
It's okay. Everyone can calm down now, I'm naming a candidate you might've expected and it's all gonna be okay. Let's state the obvious. Mackworthy is going to walk away from this season with the one of the league's all time five best seasons for rushing yards and touchdowns. He's been crushing it as hard as any runner in this league possibly can right now.
With the symbol on his jersey comes skepticism of course. Excuses abound for anyone with an Outlaws uniform and their accomplishments are constantly derided and minimized. Mackworthy is no different and it's going to make it tougher than it ought to be for him to win this award. Even though at the 13 game mark, Reg has scored as many touchdowns as Bubba Nuck and Darlane Farlane combined. Yet no matter what happens, it's going to come with a "yeah but..". Yeah...but....no. Reg Mackworthy is MVP worthy.
Mike Boss
QB
A record setting high level offense scoring points all over the place. Boss is..well...the Boss. He leads the league in attempts, completions, completion percentage, touchdowns, and QB Rating. The reception list is topped by THREE of his targets. Receiving touchdowns? His guys are first and second. He.....he is leading in pretty much every volume AND percentage that a QB can lead in. Anyone can achieve through insane volume but Boss actually succeeds at an astounding level.
This is where I'd generally try to show a drawback. He doesn't have one. That was the point of that whole volume thing I just did. To point out that he is also executing at a higher level, despite doing it the most. That's insane. He's probably winning this award. I'm going to say it one more time for those that it hasn't quite sunk in for. he throws the most, yes. But he also completes the highest percentage of passes. And his ridiculous 29 touchdowns would probably be even more if his runners didn't have the most rushing touchdowns. Just think about that and realize that Boss' dominance could actually be worse.
So are these the only candidates? Of course not. Is anyone else really going to sneak into this conversation? Maybe. Jayce Tuck will probably get mentioned on the defensive side for his insane sack numbers. Bradley Westfield might get a nod for leading every single receiving category AND return categories too. Boss Tweed could get sympathy recognition for his brave struggle in leading the league in yards but being unable to get into the end zone on the league's worst team. Tim Pest might even get recognized, although it seems likely that everyone will suffer a serious aversion to recognizing the sheer number of Otters and Outlaws having tremendous years. Well.....there it is. Go ahead and fight about it.
