In the dusty bars of Mexico City the energy and emotion of the NSFL illuminated every screen, filled every seat and opened every beer; however, I wasn’t watching the game, drinking the beer, enjoying the parties, I was on the field working on my game getting stronger and faster. I didn’t need to watch to know what I had to do to make it from the cracked concrete of Saint Saenz to the Gridiron of the NSFL, I knew deep down, I Had to make one hell of an impact.
5 AM conditioning every day in my mind and heart I knew what I had to do however as a high school kid my body my body sometimes didn’t want to believe. Although all it took was a football in my hands and headphones in my ears and the exhaustion would unchain my body as my love for the game was released. I’d start running, thinking about the near torture I was about to put my body through, as the beats of classic American hip hop would pour into my ears these thoughts would be replaced with the dream, the fans wearing number 56 shouting for Elmarez, stadiums filled, fans cheering, awards won. I kept running till my legs begged to move forward on my morning routine, finishing the workout at roughly 7 AM. Ready to go to school and get on the field to continue the hard work, football was the only thing that mattered I wasn’t going to let is slip away due to my own failure to work hard.
I knew my hurdles were higher than some, so close yet so far to the bright lights and lush fields of an American college program I quickly realised that no eyes would be looking for a young kid from Mexico and that my future was very much in my own hands, for the better and worse. However, this wasn’t going to stop me, why come all this way and stop after no letters come to your door. I sent my own game film to what seemed like hundreds of colleges asking them for a shot because I knew that’s all I needed. It was one shot and the pathway to the NSFL was set, it wasn’t going to be an easy journey however all I needed was for my success to be available.
New house, new team, new country, same game. The move to Georgia State was something I had never experienced before however the glimpse of a programme I knew would drive me to the DSFL and then NSFL draft was more than enough to push me to be the best, coupled with the great mentorship of Shawn Elliot led me to transition into a soon to be professional athlete at a rate I and the college were extremely happy with. The work on the field was the most important thing in my mind and I could only be happy until no mistakes were made, I was chasing ‘the perfect game’. Records, awards, game balls I couldn’t stop there, I had bigger fish to fry than collegiate records. I was making noise and I knew I had to be heard by a DSFL team.
I’m Luis Elmarez and this is going to be the first instalment of what will be a long and successful NSFL career. These blog posts will record my journey from the parks of Mexico City to the stadiums of the league. The next stop on my journey is the DSFL draft where I’ll be able to showcase my abilities and show the whole NSFL the tough mentality and leadership that is available to them.
Until next time
