I like to think I'm a pretty solid guy. I live within my means and try to help others when they need a hand. Never did I imagine that doing what seemed like a good deed would land me in hot water, however. Back when I was playing at the University of Virginia I would take an occasional weekend trip up to Washington D.C. If you haven't been before, there are quite a lot of people who could use a hand there. Not one to ignore someone in need, I stumbled across one man who said he hadn't had a meal in days. I told him to come with me and headed for a McDonald's a couple of blocks down. I didn't think anything of it at the time, but a couple of police officers started trailing us and followed us there. I guess I should've figured something was up because the guy I was trying to help started getting real fidgety. Before I got to the front of the line to order the police had tackled him to the ground. I wasn't sure what was happening but from my point of view the cops were being pretty rough with a man who's only crime was going into a fast food restaurant. I tried to come to his aid but, as it turned out, he was an escaped convict and from the cops' point of view it seemed as if I was aiding and abetting. I spent the next few hours at the station explaining myself and how I ended up with this man and why I tried to help him. In the end they recognized it was just a misunderstanding, but man did they make me sweat.
