Written: Must include 200 words. For most Memorial Day isn't the solemn holiday it is meant to be. For most it's a fun weekend with family and friends shooting off fireworks and drinking beer. Some celebrate it loudly, while others quietly commemorate the occasion, remembering those who have passed. Write about your Memorial Day traditions, whether it's a fun family occasion or just a bit of quiet reflection.
Lavelle travelled home to Ireland for memorial day, mainly because of the fact that he didn't know memorial day was a holiday celebrated in the US. Despite the fact that he's spent 7 years in Canada playing with Yellowknife and atleast another year playing for the Wildcats in the NCAA.
Regardless, Lavelle on the flight home had a quick look at his phone, only for his face to lose all color. What came next was various snapchat story updates from teammates such as QB Mat Akselsen who had thrown a massive BBQ to celebrate memorial day, linebacker Boss Tweed's big beer trip around the entire US and wide receiver Eric Kennedy's public book launch of his autobiography titled "Not Wes Welker, but close enough".
Lavelle was in awe as he flicked through story after story of all his teammates and friends celebrating memorial day, while he was on his way home to thunderstorms and terrential rain in the west of Ireland. Looking back on it, it was truly inspiring.
If only somebody had told him about this great american holiday and maybe he wouldn't have had organised this ill advised trip home with so much going on that weekend. Oh well.
