Dougie attended the University of South Carolina, whose football team has a long set of traditions. The program started in 1892, with their first game on Christmas Eve. In those traditions, one of the most well known is the 2001: A Space Odyssey entrance song, a tradition that started in the 1980s. Before running on the field, a video plays South Carolina highlights, typically highlights from many different years. The video ends with a quote from Steve Spurrier, the head ball couch: "It's time for Carolina football!" Then begins the song: 2001 A Space Odyssey, and the crowd erupts in cheers. Players begin running on the field and the mascot, Cocky (who is a fan favorite tradition from the 1980s himself), is in the middle of the field to greet them, where smoke and other pyrotechnics are going off. It is said that Cocky’s part in the 2001 entrance is “one of the magical moments” of the tradition.

Dougie being a surprising star at kicker, winning many games with clutch kicks, is particularly cheered on when entering the stadium. Some fans even chant D.U.G. D.U.G. as he enters. Dougie Smalls hopes this level of fandom for his kicking game will emerge in the NSFL.
