Portland is one of the most distinguished and established teams in the DSFL, and with that territory comes a ferocious and dedicated fan base. As the team’s primary kicker, Venus Powers is well versed in many of the fandom’s unique traditions. Putting aside the rather infamous incidents of the phenomenon only known as “Strip Touchdown”, the fan base has shown their support in a great many ways. Hours before the games start, fans can be seen flooding the Snake Pit parking lot with tailgating galore, including both more traditional game fare (hot dogs, hamburgers, beer, more beer) with some unique cultural influences from the team’s star players (Posta à Mirandesa and other Portuguese flavors from Jay Cue, fluffy tacos from San Antonio to honor Venus Powers, etc.) The tailgate outside the Snake Pit is simply incredible and never the same twice.
Fans also get incredibly into the action during the game itself. Because of the design of the Snake Pit, on third downs the crowd noise can reach decibel levels comparable to CenturyLink Stadium a few hours north. Waves of fans deck themselves out in alternating columns of yellow and black clothes and participate in a wave after a Pythons score, creating the illusion of a rippling snake. There’s a reason why Portland is one of the most inhospitable home environments in the DSFL.
And on a more personal note, Venus Powers finally took home the toy snake after being voted for the game ball against Minnesota in Week 10.
