1) Playoff Review
The S20 Ultimus season saw many great performances across both conferences of the NSFL, but the single most lopsided game of any of these playoff games came during the conference championship for the NSFC between the Baltimore Hawks and division winner Yellowknife Wraiths. The game started out pretty even between the two teams, exiting the first quarter tied seven to seven, but very quickly the game began to go out of hand for the Hawks. Following the opening of the second quarter, the Hawks would hold the Wraiths to just a field goal on their first drive of the quarter, fortunate since the Wraiths began in Hawks territory to start the quarter. After answering with a touchdown of their own from star running back Ludicolo Bigby just minutes after allowing the Wraiths to retake the lead, the Hawks would decide to shut down the offense for the day. Oh wait, no, they just couldn't do anything against a stifling Wraiths defense. Five possessions followed the second quarter touchdown, and each of the five ended with a ForThe Brand punt. Compare that to the Wraiths finishing strong with forty-five unanswered points for the win and it really was quite the trouncing by Yellowknife. Perhaps most perplexing was star wide-receiver Ahri Espeeyeeseetee's zero catches on zero targets, very strange to see a mid-tier TPE WR2 get blanked in such an important game. [230 words]
3) Revenge
I am not sure if what I desire really qualifies as "revenge" per se, but more just a desire to do well versus a certain team. I harbor no ill will towards them, and always had an excellent time as part of their team and war room, talking about the team's future and in-season/offseason moves. But just the fact that my time came to move on from them really makes me want to beat them this season. That team? The Baltimore Hawks. It is convenient I will have a couple chances at it, having taken a position with an in-conference team in the Chicago Butchers, but really a complete sweep of them this season would feel particularly great. Sometimes it just feels like your career is stagnating and a change is in order, and that's what I felt in Baltimore, and moving over to the younger, less proven Butchers feels like an opportunity to let my talents shine. Even if we do not end up with the win versus Baltimore, I would be content with a tremendous statistical performance individually, something along the lines of a hundred plus yard game and a touchdown or two. Anything that makes them reconsider the fact they didn't want to pony up the cash for me in S20. [215 words]
4) Resim!
Easily the most impactful game to change for the S19 Baltimore Hawks would have been to resim the week three clash against in-conference rivals Yellowknife Wraiths. The game seemed to be going well for the Hawks early in the fourth quarter, when ForThe Brand knocked through a thirty-seven yard field goal to give Baltimore a touchdown lead after scoring fourteen unanswered points in the third quarter. But the game ended in tragedy for the Hawks, when Nate Swift scored for Yellowknife on the final play of the game to give the Wraiths the twenty-three to twenty victory. The final snap was taken with just six seconds remaining in regulation, an oddity that is rarely seen in the NSFL. With a resim, it is almost undeniable that Baltimore comes away with the victory, as they were able to steer the ship for most of that week three tilt. If that game result gets flipped, then it would have been Baltimore winning the NSFC since they would have held the head-to-head tie-breaker over Yellowknife, and it would have been Baltimore playing at home in the conference championship game where they had a significantly better record on the season. A win in the conference championship probably would have ended up in an Ultimus banner. But alas, the sim gave the Wraiths the miracle victory, and the season ended up the way that it did. 16) Dynasty
It is an interesting time to be writing this, as I have just accepted a three year contract with the Chicago Butchers. A cursory glance at their roster shows a ton of potential for the team that finished the S19 season at the bottom of the NSFC standings, with standouts Rose Jenkins at quarterback and Ryan Leaf Jr. on the defensive line. Their new acquisition gives Rose a much needed target to improve upon her third overall quarterback finish, though she will need to improve her touchdown to interception ratio to do so. The Butchers already have a young running back and solid options at the second and third wide receiver positions, so upgrading from their aging tigh end is the only real offensive move they will need to make in the coming seasons. On defense, I have already mentioned the stud that is Ryan Leaf Jr., but their secondary is anchored by another S15 TPE stud Jack Rambo. There are a number of healthy earning TPE players in the 300-500 TPE range, and as those players earn more the Butchers defensive performance will see noticeable improvement. Other teams have to restock and reload to replace aging veterans, but Chicago has their youth already in place. There is literally nowhere else to go but up for this squad, and the youth of the team means that when they ascend, they'll stay there for quite some time. [235 words]
