This stuff is always interesting to me.
When Adam first hired me to be the Co-GM of the Copperheads, I asked him almost instantly about colors/logo. The result was some awful Red, Blue, and Hints of Yellow thing that I thought was very, very stupid. I harped on how terrible Red would be as a primary color for the league when you consider we already had a ‘Red’ team in Arizona and a ‘Maroon’ team in Colorado.
I looked at it like this: what would have us stand out the most when watching the sim? What color would our little dots be?
At the time we had:
The ‘Red’ team (AZ)
The ‘Maroon’ team (COL)
The ‘Orange’ team (OCO)
The ‘Yellow’ team (BAL)
The ‘Green’ team (SJ)
The ‘Blue’ team (PHI)
The ‘Purple’ team (NOLA)
The ‘Black’ team (YKW)
I was pretty adamant about not touching anywhere (using your color wheel) from Blue-Purple-Red. I hated Red and thought it was the single worst choice an expansion franchise could make. That was proven when Chicago decided to literally steal Arizona’s color scheme. It looked (and still looks) awful to have done that. I said something on my podcast at the time about how we’ve already won the first battle in the ‘Which expansion team will be better overall?’ question. (hint: 4 seasons later it’s us)
Back to colors though: to be truly different we needed to see what colors weren’t touched much. That left us with few options, most notably: White, Pink, Brown, Light Green, Not ‘Hawks’ Yellow, Gray, Silver.
Since Adam was already set on being the Copperheads, that’s what we had to work with. imagine my surprise when I was shown a logo that had a snake on it that was quite the weird color, light blue. Not an awful color choice (think ‘Cyan’) but it’s a fucking snake. My response was simple:
“This is stupid. The answer for the snake was easy: it’s a copperhead, so, you know, COPPER.”
Copper, while partially red, is much more of a brown/orange mix as it is, and our ‘dirty orange’ contrasts with the bright orange of OCO more than enough.
So then, the background.
I wanted bright silver, to really make the copper snake POP. Our ‘sim dots’ would look different than everyone else by being the bright silver/white color with the copper numbers. Would’ve looked awesome.
The logo designer never quite figured out the right color scheme I had in mind though, and it wasn’t looked at favorably by some others. That lead us to going with a darker background, which we ended up going with the dark grey you see today.
Our colors ended up being Brown/orange, Dark Grey, and a touch of white. Which all were underrepresented in the league, and our ‘dots’ are the Grey which don’t look really look like any other team in the NSFL, so we feel we’re original and unique.
I don’t envy the eventual expansion teams 11 and 12 having to figure that out.
