1. Grey Ducks 36 Coyotes 7 - Both of the playoff games in the DSFL have been blowouts so far, but this game seemed more privy to analysis. The Coyotes had great trouble getting anything going on offense. The run game was the bright spot for this team, averaging 4.6 yards per carry and 138 yards. The passing game was incredibly disappointing, with a paltry 3.7 yards per attempt with a 38.4 QBR. One wonders how the final score could have changed had the Coyotes focus more on the ground game. On the other side, the defense couldn’t manage a single sack. The Coyotes’ 5 tackles for loss is 4 better than the Ducks could manage. The Coyotes also achieved 9 total penalties on the offensive line alone. This accounts for so many yards that they could’ve used to march down the field with their run game. The Ducks’ Quarterback play was very solid, with 7.1 yards per attempt, along with no touchdowns and no interceptions. The defense managed 3 sacks and an interception, which was more than enough to hold the Coyotes to only 7 points. Two great defenses will face off next week in the Ultimini. Let’s hope for a better game than this first round.
4. Pre-draft rookie rivalries are often trivial, immature and distracting. That doesn’t make them any less fun. As the number of rookie prospects grows and the number of Offensive Linemen remains stagnant, bonds and rivalries are bound to be formed amongst peers. Tommy Sacamano, an incoming draftee and pass blocking specialist has formed an interesting rivalry with the athletic Offensive Lineman from Australia, Broderick Buckley. A couple of friendly jabs back and forth on Twitter have surely been a distraction and ultimately they are futile. Things might get uncomfortable if they ever end up in the same locker room. After all, one of them has to be picked before the other, and it seems likely that a DSFL GM would prefer a more humble, cool-headed young man such as Tommy Sacamano, and not a brash meat head like Buckley. Not to mention the fact that pass blocking specialists are a commodity, and athletic linemen like Broderick are a dime a dozen. How often do we ever see a rugby star from down under succeed in a professional football league? Buckley seems to think he doesn’t need the DSFL, but sadly for hot-shot Linemen like him, it’s mandatory. Soon we will find out how in over his head this bold young man is.
8. The number of prospects is many. The number of Linemen are few. The Linemen are large. One of the big young men in the upcoming DSFL draft is Tommy Sacamano from the University of Louisiana-Monroe. Although his competition in college was sub-par he was able to dominate his opponents with ease, only allowing a handful of sacks his entire career. Offensive Linemen that have a knack for giving their quarterback the precious time they need to complete a crucial completion are highly sought after, and this should result in Tommy being one of the first blockers off the board. While his run blocking is less than most teams would desire, he makes up for it with his natural talent of protecting the team’s most valuable asset. His strength needs some work, but that will improve over time as he acclimates to the better competition of the DSFL and NSFL. His ideal position for the greatest impact on his team would be the tackle position. He mostly played at right tackle in college, but he has some experience in the left tackle position. Speed might be a concern when trying to keep up with the quick linebackers in the NSFL, so maybe he should stay away from pulling and the screen plays.
