3. Revenge
I’ll keep it simple for the first one. The time I would like to get revenge on next season would be Austin. On the simplest level, they beat us in the conference championship. I knew it would be a tough match going on the road there and things were pretty close, but we weren’t able to do it. (Quick aside: truth be told, I want to take revenge on the sim itself. I mean, what backward ass system measures the spot of the ball from the side and not the middle??? Also, why in the world would the left corner be responsible for guarding the left receiver? Just asinine). Anyways, it was a hard-fought battle, so I tip my cap to Austin. They came out of nowhere this year and have put the league on notice. I would think they are the definite underdog against the Wraiths, but they certainly have a chance to win it all. I really want revenge because of a couple factors. One, losing two games favored at nearly 90% blew for a lot of reasons. 1. It took us out of home field advantage. 2. Getting screwed that hard doesn’t feel good… usually. Heading into the championship, NOLA came in at a team TPE of 13,912, compared to Austin’s 11,215. Broken down per player, it comes out to a slightly close 662 for NOLA compared to 590 for Austin. It stings when you certainly feel like you have the more talented roster. Oh well, that’s why we play the game right?
6. Expansion
This is a topic that I find to be a lot of fun. I know that there is a lot of work involved with an expansion, so it is a decision that is not taken lightly. For most of us who don’t see all the inner workings and behind the scenes efforts of the work put into the league, it probably seems like it’s not such a big commitment. That being said, our recruitment sizes have been thiccc lately, so it seems inevitable. If I were in charge of a DSFL expansion team, there would be a lot of different things to get situated. The first thing to really focus on is the branding. At the end of the day, it doesn’t change the results of what happens on the field. Still, people are drawn to good branding and it could offer an edge in getting people onto the team. Something that would actually affect game results would be the staff assembled. Being a new team, there isn’t a list of alums that could be pulled from. Getting the right people in early is key. With being new, you can create whatever environment you want which is huge. Rebranding can have a similar affect, but this time there is no baggage. I would try encouraging players to buy in, offering something like naming the stadium or creating some award named after the team’s best player the first season. Something unique early on to get people excited.
7. Next Year
Man, I would have to go back and check if I did this category last season. Whether I did or not, I’m hoping this is the last time I have to do this topic. I truly believe that New Orleans has what it takes to win it all. I’m sure a lot of players feel this away about their teams and rightfully so. It’s a talented league and it would be pretty lame if most teams didn’t actually feel like they could win it all. NOLA has some great things going for it. For one, we made it to the conference championship this season. It was a pretty close game too, meaning that we didn’t just make it and get blown out. As far as the regular season itself, our conference was a tight race all the way up to the finish. I suppose we could have been bounced from the playoffs altogether, showing how close this league can be. Losing two games where we were heavily favored really came back to bite us. Wining those two would have secured home field advantage in the conference championship and possibly even the Ultimus. HFA isn’t everything, but I would rather have it any game that might be even remotely close. Our roster is well-balanced and still mostly in a peak window. We will have some players entering regression, but overall we are still in a good position. It would be ideal to reinforce our future with some keys picks this coming draft too.
8. Scouting Report
There have been a lot of big names that have came out of the DSFL this season. In a couple weeks, we will see how takes home coveted awards and is showered with honors from this past season. One player that I want to touch on will most likely receive none of that attention. He has a relatively small amount of TPE, but what he has done on the field has been quite amazing this year. That player is Jeremy Quellers. Jeremy was a mid-round draft pick for the Kansas City Coyotes. He is fairly quiet in rookie chat, but he pops into his team locker room. He is also usually commenting on match streams, but most wouldn’t even know it was him. Jeremy finished the season with 5 interceptions and a pick six. He also had 15 pass deflections. His 5 interceptions really stand out to me. He was the Coyotes defensive player of the game at least two different weeks, meaning that his interceptions always came at opportune times. He also had a big-time pick in the prospect bowl, where his team would go on to win it all. He among the other secondary leaders such as my boy Victor Moreno and a potential first round pick in FS Murphy. It speaks volumes to his play style. He is an assuming guy who keeps his head down and works hard.
