6. Norfolk may have suffered a difficult loss in the playoffs this season, I cannot deny it, but I believe with the current management and a few returning players they can make a relatively easy push to an Ultimini next year. This past draft introduced several great players to Norfolk who I think have a fairly high chance of returning for a second season, a few of those are QBs Luke Skywalker and Suleiman Ramza (Skywalker may get taken by a team in need of QB, but Ramza likely needs more time in the oven) and LBs Jack Banks and Spike Suzuki. The potential return of WR Kevin Koh and S Wesley Eriksen would also be a positive potent for the little boats. If all these players returned they would make up an extremely solid floor that could be augmented with a new RB, secondary pieces, and defensive line to make an exceptional team I think would have a great chance of winning their conference and scoring home field advantage in the Ultimini. And off the field, I know the people in the Norfolk will stick around and continue being the positive influences they are, getting the next class excited and committed to sticking around to hoist that trophy. 8. You know, I like a lot of guys at Myrtle Beach. Memento Mori is a great guy for one, Raindelay has always been exceptionally polite in his scouting, and Frost enjoys playing the character of our rival and I totally respect that. That being said I want to come back to Norfolk just so I can kick their teeth in next season. What a constant thorn in my side. They beat us at home early in the season, which put us in a bad position where we had to claw our way back up the table, and then in the playoffs they spanked us like an unruly child! It would've been humiliating if I weren't just doing this league for fun. They just have that smarmy dynasty feeling about them, like they think they're so much better than everyone because they have a bunch of dudes who still play there their second year. Newsflash guys: You don't count as the best player in your grade if you've been held back for three years. You're a grown ass man playing football with teenagers. It's just sad and I hate them for fun, I hope they barely make the playoffs next year just so they can get absolutely battered in the first round. 16. If you haven't heard of Matt "Son of Havoc" Cross, you haven't been paying attention. The young safety may not appear on any end of the year awards lists, but he has been instrumental to his team's successes both on and off the field. Matt Cross is an explosive playmaker, his greatest skill is his vision. Even from downfield he knows how to read a quarterback's eyes and track how a play develops. When Matt is on the field, the middle of the park is a no-fly zone. He's extremely reliable, and is often used as the Cover man in safety blitz schemes, allowing the Strong Safety he plays alongside to rush forward without the defense being worried about their shape. He's also an agile ball hawk, I for one am not soon to forget the interception he took to the end zone week 1. Besides his on the field talents, Matt is an exceptional locker room presence. He's known to hype his teammates up with his youthful energy, but he also has a nuanced wisdom about him. You'll see him directing players that are his senior, and they nod along and listen, because even at his age he's respected for his football IQ. Matt Cross is predicted to be drafted in the first round, as he should be, the sublime safety is top of his class in every reasonable metric, and whoever pulls the trigger on this guy is going to get a star player for years to come. 19. I find it hard to believe there's a DSFL team that has a stronger locker room culture than Norfolk. You always hear programs talk about how they're "like a family" and I don't know if I would say that. I think there's something disingenuous about it. But in Norfolk, it's like we've been friends for years not months. I sincerely feel like I can talk to these people, because they're open-minded and willing to listen. The people in Norfolk aren't greatly opinionated, and if they are, they know to keep it to themselves or talk about things in private. It's a culture of mutual respect and admiration, regardless if you're posting 100 times a day or 1. It's always so nice to see the less active people pop up and get a rousing greeting from our enthusiastic players. I think our GMs have a fairly hands-off approach that allows the players to grow and act in their own way without feeling judged. Our GMs are just another couple of guys in there, they don't think they're better than us, they know we're just all people, and they're open to giving advice or help when needed. It also doesn't hurt that multiple alums come hang out with us, and they're also extremely kind and helpful people. Isa alone has taught me so much and is always down to have a discussion about some specific situation or idea I've been knocking away. So yeah, I find it hard to believe anyone else is having as much fun as these lil boats. (259 words)
