6) Next year: The Tijuana Luchadores had a roller coaster season. After starting 5-3, we lost five of our last six to finish 6-8. We just missed the playoffs by one game. I think we can be much better next year because many of our best players were late-bloomers. After getting off to slow starts, our S22 running backs Richard Gilbert and Julio Tirtwidjaja, LB George Fisher, WR Thomas Passman, and S Literally Just A. Hexagon have overtaken their peers by making late season TPE pushes. Since none of the Luchadores have absolutely elite TPE totals, it is likely that most of the S22 class will be sent back down to Tijuana after the NSFL draft. This means we’ll have maxed out players at the following positions: 2 max QBs, 2 max RBs, 1 max OL, 1 max WR, 1 max CB. If Hexagon and Fisher keep pushing, they’ll max out easily too. With that many starters at the DSFL cap, our offense especially should be dominant next season. Despite Ed Barker likely getting called up to NOLA, I expect our team to have a fearsome running game that might be among the best in the league. Throw in two max QBs, and we’ll have much more success scoring the ball next season.
10) Armchair QB: As previously mentioned, the Tijuana offense should be unstoppable next year. Unfortunately, our defense, particularly along the defensive line, is looking quite deficient. Our wonderful GMs struck out on a few picks on the defensive side of the ball, so I expect us to remedy that in the draft. Only two of Tijuana’s top 8 players from the S22 draft are on the defense, so we’ll need to do better this draft. If I was a GM, I’d take the best defensive player available regardless of position. Defensive line is the biggest need, but we could use another linebacker to play alongside Fisher with the likely promotion of Ugarth to the NSFL. We could also use another defensive back to pair with either Witten or Hexagon or serve as a nickelback. It’s never a good idea to lock into drafting a certain position in a certain round, but ideally the Luchadores will get a defensive lineman in the first round, a defensive back in the second, a linebacker in the third, and then take some more fliers at defensive lineman, pass catcher, and offensive linemen for the rest of the draft. Two intriguing options at DT are Tyler Mountain, who spent some time of the Luchadores roster this season, and Bane Kaʻanāʻanā, a recreate by new Honolulu general manager ADwyer87. We might also pursue drafting safety Adélie de Pengu, a recreate by new NOLA general manager Isastarcrossed.
12) Pay it Forward: No question, Jay_Doctor is my favorite person in the NSFL. As the Tijuana GM, he reached out to me in recruiting when I joined the league, and engaged me in conversation about my username, a reference to The Lord of the Rings. The very fact that he got the reference told me that he was going to be a friend. He does a great job of making the Tijuana players feel involved and valued, giving out game balls every week to the top performers and even giving credit to the big guys with our wall of pancakes. He’s a defensive back like me, and he plays for a championship-level organization in NOLA. While winning is important, he doesn’t lose sight of the main purpose of the DSFL: to engage and retain players, to build a community, and to teach and develop players for their time in the NSFL. I really appreciate that he took a chance on me with Tijuana’s second pick, even though I am totally new to sim leagues. He answered all my questions and helped me figure out how the league works. I have only been on one team, but I think he epitomizes what a good GM should be. He’s never been negative to anyone on our team and hasn’t pushed people into switching positions even when it might have been more beneficial to our team’s success.
18) Award Season: The Performance of the Year Award is a strange award. Unlike most of the awards, season-long performance and consistency are not considered. Therefore, I am suggesting that a relatively unheard of and unheralded player win this award. Magnus Valdyr is a safety for the Tijuana Luchadores. At 151 TPE, he is the eleventh safety by current total. Nevertheless, he had one of the most astounding performances in DSFL history. In a week 7 road game against the Utimus-winning Myrtle Beach Buccaneers, Valdyr had two interceptions, both which he returned for touchdowns. Only seventeen defensive touchdowns were scored in the DSFL last season in 56 games. Valdyr is the only player in the whole league with two defensive touchdowns this season, and they both happened in one game! Not just statistically impressive, these plays were incredibly important for the game and the whole season for the Luchadores. Valdyr’s first pick six was a 62 yard pick six in the first quarter which put Tijuana up 14-0 over their biggest rival. After a comeback by Myrtle Beach, the Luchadores were in danger of blowing the lead. The Buccs had the ball with less than 3 minutes to play down 21-16. A touchdown would have handed Tijuana their fourth straight road loss. Instead, Valdyr picked off another Chris Ramos pass, Ramos’s third interception of the game, and Valdyr took is 51 yards the other way to score another touchdown and ice the game. This win was Tijuana’s first road win, and after a win the following week, they were 5-3 and the number one seed in the division. Valdyr’s incredible performance with three tackles, 2 passes defended, 2 interceptions, 113 return yards, and two touchdowns, should win the Performance of the Year award because of its incredible rarity, the unlikely heroism of the player involved, and the season-changing nature of the road victory over the top team in the league.
