1) Playoff Review:
This is a review of the Playoff matchup between the beloved Portland Pythons and the often despised, Kansas City Coyotes. The first quarter of the game started off with an impressive opening drive touchdown from Portland. Kansas City would kick a field goal on the following drive bringing the score to end the first quarter 7-3, Portland. The second quarter would see two successful drives by the Coyotes capped off by touchdowns. The first of which was due to many penalty mistakes by the Pythons. Closing the first half at 17-7. Early in the second half, the Pythons completed a huge 49 yard play showing some promise. Yet again, mistakes were made as at the very end of the play they would fumble the ball. This turnover seemed to make the entire team come unglued. The following drive the Coytoes would drive down the field easily scoring another touchdown making it 24-7. The 4th quarter would open with yet another Kansas City touchdown and it was all she wrote. The final score being 31-7, in favor of the Coyotes. It was a tough loss for the Pythons who would rack up way too my penalty yards to make it close. You have to wonder if the coach could get control of the locker room that clearly lacked discipline. It would be a tough way to end the year for the Pythons but hopefully a learning experience for the whole team.
6) Next Year
Although this year the Portland Pythons came up a little bit short of their Ultimini goals, next year will surly be the year. In S21, the season would begin for Portland coming off of an abysmal 2 win season. Everyone knew it would be nearly impossible to completely turn things around in one year, however, big strides were made in the right direction. To come away with an 8-6 record is obviously a major improvement and many even believed this team had what it takes to make the championship. With such an immediate upgrade on the team, building on what they have should be a pretty easy task. It seems like Portland has their Defense dialed in with a solid squad and great coaching. At this time, there is no telling how many members from this season will return, but we can assume, due to the size of the draft class, that it will be quite a few. If their defensive squad can stay on track, they will be able to continue dominating. On the other side of the ball, minor improvements should lead the way. Really, less turnovers on offense is all that was needed. Cleaning this up with a bit better catching should propel the team to score many more points as well. I don’t think it will be a problem for the Pythons to continue to improve and we will be looking forward to watching them next year.
10) Armchair GM
The Strategy of improving the Portland Pythons shouldn’t be a too difficult one as they have vastly improved since the previous season. First things first, for the draft, they should keep focusing on building up the Offensive Line if possible. Last draft this was a key strategy for them and it seemed to have paid off fairly well. Next, I think adding a bit more help with key Offensive weapons should be a solid move. Getting pass catching weapons to help move the ball downfield would prove to be key in their immediate success. On the defensive side of the ball, it is hard to say what their team will look like next year. The NSFL S22 draft class is massive and this could lead to many great defensive players that they have returning to play in the DSFL. If that happens, their defense would be pretty unstoppable moving into Season 22. I would imagine that they will be able to return a solid chunk but continuing to add help both on the line and in the secondary is always a plus. This could also be something that would help them in the future. The other thing of focus could be addressing their special teams woes. Filling in a solid Kicker may be an issue worth addressing this offseason. Along with these draft strategies, you have to hope that the team works on discipline. Penalties killed their season and I would think the coaching staff will be forced to step up their game as well.
16) Scouting Report
This is a scouting report about the Portland Pythons Defensive End, Slinky Claxton. Claxton hails from Western Michigan and is built like a barn. Weighing in at 296 lbs and standing at 6’4”, he has proven he has the size that it takes to be a force in this league. For a bigger guy, he has really worked on his speed in his first season in the DSFL. That should greatly help him once he faces bigger competition. The biggest thing that comes with picking Claxton is his ability to make solid tackles on the line. Claxton down the stretch in his rookie season came into his own with 7 tackles for a loss. While in Portland, their Defensive Line was full of plenty of experience and Claxton still was able to make an impact with 43 regular season tackles. Aside from his great efforts on the field, he is a pretty likeable guy in the locker room. Claxton is one of the better team players out there and going into the draft I would expect teams who value their locker room chemistry to make a run for him. He is clearly a top 5 DE in this upcoming NSFL draft and wherever he ends up will be pretty happy they got him. Expect a decent rookie season with more improvements to his strength and endurance down the road. Claxton could end up being one of the leagues premier defensive ends in no time.
