With the DSFL draft getting ever closer, Raphael d’Alcott has had a lot of time to think about the path that has brought him to this moment. Along with football, music has always had a big influence on his life and the teams he has played for. Being raised in Texas he was exposed to an eclectic mix of Rock, Heavy Metal, Country and Western and Soul music. Wherever Raphael went, he brought with him his tastes in music and flair but he was also influenced by his teammates and their music tastes as well. So when putting together a pre-game playlist, he looked back at his time with Ohio State and even earlier than that, Raphael put together a list of his favourite songs:
1) Ashes to Ashes - Saxon
The pump up song of choice for the freshmen of Ohio State, this song symbolizes how they were given a baptism by fire from their coach and university. They were asked to come together, work hard at every practice and perform well on one of the most recognisable and successful college programmes for football in the entire country. Their soon quick bond was forged in fire and this song fits their mentality perfectly. No man left behind and only together will they thrive and win when the eyes of Ohio and the nation are on them.
2) Die with Your Boots on - Iron Maiden
A song that all of the d’Alcott relates to. The family lives and works together on the family farm, they have done for at least 100 years according to their family history. From as long as five years old, Raphael remembers vividly helping out with family in small ways then moving on to bigger chores as he grew older and various family members left to go to college other matters. This song represents what is to be the mentality of the Family. It was Raphael’s father, Elijah d’Alcott that instilled in all his children that if you are going to work, whether on the farm or in football or in any area of life, you are giving it everything you have. 100% work ethic or nothing at all. This song is a favourite in the household and from what they have said, it's not hard to see why.
3) Aquila Natus - Sean Householder
A song choice inspired by the deep Americana culture that Raphael was raised in. Texas is a hard-working place, full of patriots and people who survive the harsh conditions of the desert year in and year out. Raphael has always had great respect for those who fight and gave their lives in the name of the country. He and his family always attended gatherings for former soldiers, handed out food on various occasions and did whatever they could to show that respect for these fine people. This song reminds Raphael of their sacrifice and how he should use their courage when he goes into situations that make him nervous.
4) Born for Greatness - Papa Roach
A song that every DSFL rookie can relate to and a very personal track to Raphael. This song, no matter where it’s played, speaks to the men in the locker room as if to say, you made it this far now proof you belong here. You are born for greatness now reach for it. Sure there are obstacles in your way but it’s nothing that you cannot overcome because you already overcame so many hurdles just to even get to this point.
5) The Battle of Evermore - Led Zeppelin
Raphael has read many fantasy novels in his time. Led Zeppelin's Lord of the Rings inspired track speaks to him on a multitude of levels but it's the quietness of the opening that really hits home for him. Every Time he steps onto the field, no matter if personal or professional, he hears those strings start playing and he knows he is entering the heart of the storm. A great track to prepare yourself for battle. Considering the enormity of some of the games he played in during his time in college, comparing Peach Bowl vs Auburn or Rose bowl vs Texas seemed apt, at least according to him.
6) Buckeye Battle Cry/Across the Field - Ohio State
Hey! When you are at a university for three years, run out to the Ohio State band playing it at every home game and listening to the crowd chant along with the lyrics, it's hard not to get attached to a song. To be fair, the Buckeye fight song is a great tune to run out of the tunnel to. It was also a rather special moment for Raphael, running out for his first game and hearing the song and the massive Ohio state student body who crammed into Ohio Stadium to watch them play. LSU has “Neck” and “Fight for LSU”, USC has “Troy, Fight on!”, University of Texas has “The Eyes of Texas” but Ohio State has “Buckeye Battle Cry” and it will always be special to Raphael.
7) Hard hat and a Hammer - Alan Jackson
A personal song that makes Raphael think about his parents and his family back in Texas. A song about how there is nothing wrong with being a working man and in fact, those working men are possibly the most important people in the world. They keep the world turning in their own way, by doing the jobs other people don’t want to do. Miners, Construction workers, Lumberjacks, Delivery truck drivers, train drivers and indeed, Farmers. Raphael’s parents are both in their fifties yet they are still working just as hard as they did on the farm as they did when in their thirties when Raphael was born. Songs like this will always make Raphael think of home and how proud he is of it. Sure he wasn’t born on the beaches of cali or in the skyscrapers of New York, but that doesn't matter. He was born to a working family on a farm in Texas and he wouldn’t have it any other way.
