BREAKING: Yellowknife Kicker to Fight in CFU

According to Championship Fighting Universe media officials, Yellowknife Wraiths kicker Dougie Smalls has begun training to fight in the heavyweight division of the league. This offseason, NSFL media officials spotted Smalls training at Doomsday MMA in Edmonton, Alberta, where he joins a team of successful fighters. While Smalls was already large, particular for a kicker, he has appeared to have bumped his muscle mass up significantly.

We caught up with Smalls to confirm these reports:

Reporter: “Is it true you are set to fight in the CFU?”

Smalls: “Yeah I guess the cat is out of the bag. I have been training in kickboxing this offseason in addition to my normal kicking routine. I started kickboxing in hopes to bring another dimension to my kicking game, but turns out I am pretty good at it. ”

Reporter: "Did you reach out to the CFU or did they reach out to you?"

Smalls: "I was at a party with my dudes Giannis Kroustis and Axel Hornbacher this offseason, and they have some connections over there. Heard my new training routine included kickboxing, and it went up from there."

Reporter: “Is there concern that this will distract from your NSFL career?”

Smalls: “Na, my number one focus has been and will always be football and the Yellowknife Wraiths. I even chose to train here in Canada rather than several other gyms with fighters I previously knew. There were several gyms I was interested in joining in Las Vegas, but that is simply too far away from Yellowknife. Doomsday MMA is in Edmonton. Edmonton is a quick 2 hour flight away from Yelowknife, so I can ensure I am at all team meetings and practices, whether they are voluntary or not. I am still getting to know the guys in that gym, but they have a successful fighting team already. ”

Reporter: “Any concerns about being injured in a fight?”

Smalls: “As long as I protect myself from leg kicks, I think I will be fine.”

Reporter: “Does Yellowknife management know about this?”

Smalls: “Well they will once you report this, but I know my guys in the front office encourage us to get better at our craft, and I think kickboxing may give me something different in the kicking game than other kickers in our league. Nothing in my contract prevents me from playing another sport that doesn’t directly compete with the NSFL.”

Reporter: “Are you afraid fans will think you are not focused on Yellowknife football?”

Smalls: ”Man, I gotta get to practice. Those fans will just have to watch me get kicker of the year, an Ultimus win, and the heavyweight title.”
