The first name that jumped out to me when reading this prompt was the same conclusion many came to: Sweet James-Jones. There have been higher draft picks spent on arguably worse players on the field, but off the field he was a disaster. SJJ was one the first stories I learned about joining the league. I’ve heard him referred to as “Virtual blackface,” and “A white kid cosplaying as what he thought a rapper was like,” and looking back at his old posts I can’t say I disagree. Outspoken personalities can be fun when played right, but when you can’t separate the player from the user it becomes an issue, especially when it ends up getting you banned for life. Selected with the 6th pick in the S19 NSFL draft, SJJ made an immediate impact, recording 55 receptions for 702 yards and three touchdowns. In S20 he slightly regressed to a 57/539/1 statline, and was out of the league in S21. Not only did he offer just two seasons of decent production, but it did nothing for the Butchers as they finished at the bottom of the league in his two seasons. On field production doesn’t excuse off-field behavior, but the combination of giving Chicago a bad rep (or at least a worse one…), lack of great production, spending just two seasons in the NSFL, and no team success to show for it as a 1st round pick makes SJJ the worst bust in NSFL history.
