Task 4:
Since we are about to face them in the Season 22 Ultimini, I will explore the Luchadores’ season to find out what we are up against.
Starting from a TPE standpoint, the Luchadores have the third worst offense in the league, and the fourth best defense. They appear to be a middle of the road team when compared purely on numbers. But in the regular season they dominated the regular season with their 10-4 record. Despite the large TPE discrepancy, the Luchadores were carried by their offense. They had a league leading 330 points this season, but were only third lowest in points allowed with 259. They held a killer 6-1 record at home, which seemed to be a major advantage for them.
The Tijuana offense seemed to be composed of two big tandems. Slothlisberger and Waters both played quarterback for much of the season. It’s likely that teams struggled against preparing for two quarterbacks that could both be a threat. On the run game, Gilbert and Back were both dangerous for the Luchadores. Both made the top ten points leaderboard for the season, along with Tijuana kicker Small, who had tied for first. Vequain led the league with a whopping 938 receiving yards, rounding out this explosive offense. One more stat to note is that Hexagon led the league in interceptions, giving more time for Tijuana to rack up points.
Now let’s look game by game. The Luchadores appeared to have a mediocre start to the season, but would go on to have two major win streaks that would cement them in first place.
Game 1: 17-6 Loss to Norfolk Seawolves
Game 2: 39-16 Loss to London Royals
Two big losses is not at all what the Luchadores expected at the beginning of this season. But it didn’t appear to shake them too much, because no other losses would be more than 5 points, and Game 1 would be their only loss at home for the season.
Game 3: 27-21 Win against Myrtle Beach Buccaneers
The Bucs would lose their first of the season, and the Luchadores would gain some confidence in a big turning point for their season.
Game 4: 30-22 Win against Minnesota Grey Ducks
Game 5: 30-9 Win Against Dallas Birddogs
Game 6: 20-17 Win Against Kansas City Coyotes
Another big win against Ultimini favorites in the Ducks. They would continue with convincing play against Dallas and Kansas City.
Game 7: 26-21 Loss to Portland Pythons
The streak would snap at 4, with the Pythons desperately trying to stay afloat and secure a playoff spot.
Game 8-12: Wins
The Luchadores would not be rattled by the Pythons. They would start a second, 5 game win streak, that would include a much needed victory against the Norfolk Seawolves.
Game 13: 23-20 Loss to Kansas City Coyotes
Their final loss would be decided by a field goal.
Game 14: 24-14 Win against the Portland Pythons
They would get revenge against the Pythons for snapping their streak and secure the best record in the DSFL.
